: Another axle bites the dust...

Well, I missed out on some cool trails this weekend. I ran most of one trail, then broke on the first tough section. So, I made the call this morning, Alloy axles are on their way... I gotta get these out while I still have something left to use as spares...

For trial pics check out the general 4x4 section (thrashing big meats). This is a cool new area just north of Clayton...

I don't know of anyone running Longfields around here, so I don't know how they would hold up. I know stock toy birfs are'nt worth draggin' off the trailer....

This axle broke from attrition. It survived two broken axle joints and a stub shaft, so it was living on borrowed time. :)

I'll put fresh alloy's in there with full circle 760's and I'll be good to go for a while....

Why not CTM's??

I consider that overkill for myself. While I have killed several 297 joints, I have never broken a cross. Always break or expell the cap. Since I went to full circle clips and 760 joints, I have only broken the ends out of the cap, but only when something else gave first. This is with almost two years on Spicer shafts!

The picture is a prime example, the inner axle yoke failed, then the odd load broke the ends out of two other caps. All cap bodies were in place! To me that's good, because caps sticking out tend to really F things up (like seperating ball joints, broken knuckles, etc...)

I'm convinced the 760's are stronger, and full circle clips put me very near the strength of the axle (19 spline stub). I really don't think I can break a 30 spline shaft, since my Moser rear axles have lasted nearly two years... (oops did I say that out loud... ;) )..

Of course this was the maden voyage with the 6:1... :D

Okcrawler,
I'm a little confused. I gather from this 760's are a stronger u-joint than the 297x's and the full circle clips are much better. Now for the newbieish question. Do yo have to do anything to stock d44 shafts for the 760's? I thought I had a handle on the dana stuff but maybe not...

the 760 is the replacemnt for the 297, it's forged vs cast same size same fit, just a stronger cross and better cap design with bigger needles..

CTM's are NOT overkill :D

Yep, DSI got ya.. :)
Spicer says the 760 is not stronger, but from what I've seen they DO hold up much better. None of our guys have broken a cross yet. I've seen several examples of a 760 being stronger than the ears on a Spicer shaft. Alloy shafts are a different story.

CTM's are not indestructable! There's several people who have broken/breaking them. The joint is still the weak point. I just don't feel it's necessary with my application. [fingers crossed] ;)

So what did those axles cost you?

Well, I've got connections with a Moser dealer, so I got a nice discount ;)... A little under $600 total (including joints).

They are some snap rings Jayson got to do his axles. I got some from him to put mine together, but I have not found a source for myself yet. I don't know what size exactly, but there is lots of info in the General section on them.

PS - Here's a sneak peek at my next project.....
I'll post a thread when I get it the first 'shot'... :D

I'm staying conservitive. I'll start with a 25 shot and stay at or under 30. Even so, that should put be over 100 hp when activated...
