What's up everybody, first time posting on here. Have been searching and learning a lot these past few months. I am not a total newb but not an expert either. I am deployed to Afghanistan :flipoff2: right now and saw this ad on craigslist for a front Dana 60 out of a 1978 F250 Custom. Says that it came of a truck with 12x,xxx miles. I know i want to put tons once i get back, but is that a good price?

Thanks

yes...way to much IMO unless it's ready to install (good kingpins, brakes, etc) They come up all the time for 1000-1200.

well there is another one on craigslist for 1800 so i thought this was a decent deal. the person selling it says it is complete hub to hub but there is no way of telling what condition it is in until i get some pictures from him. well, i'll try to talk him down on price and see what happens. thanks.

if its an oe takeout, i would pass on it for something better. You should be able to find axles in this condition for 1000.

Are you sure it is a 60 and not a HD D44? Something else to consider. You will also probably get a hard time for not posting in the non-hardcore section...

This, for sure. sometimes less depends on where you're staying....

like said above, $1500 is too much for a stock axle,

on the other hand $1500 with high steer, detroit/locker, already geared to what you want, and prepped and pretty is a smoking deal.

So should I at least look at it? I know a buddy of mine paid $1500 for his 79 Ford Dana 60 about a year ago, but he says its a really rare Dana 60. I usually see Chevy/Dodge 60's go for less.

HAPPYJOHN, thank you, i should be home in about 3 months. Has been a very long deployment, but it makes you appreciate everything you have back home.

if you pay more than a grand for a junkyard 60 then you got screwed. now if you have to have one this exact moment then you might have to pay more. i got my 60 and matching rear with good brakes and bearings for 600. i looked for a month.

thanks guys, I decided not to buy the axle after all. it is a lot of money and i'm not even there to look at it. Is there that much of a difference from the late seventies 70's to the 80's and 90's D60's. i know i don't want a 2000-newer one.

Everything you want to know is in the main Tech section. scroll down and have a read of the DANA 60 bible. Everything you could possiblly want to know.

what rig are you planning to put teh 60 on? Teh 78-79 are harder to find, but there are some for slae in teh classified here for about $1000-$1200 (I think theer was a 79 thsi week for only $800). I paid close toa grand for mine and mine was a POS cracked knuckle, etc. I knew I wsa going to rebuild teh whole thing, but stillwas way too mcuh for a beater axle. I woudl try to stcik at most $1000 for a stcok axle, and plan to spend another $200 to allow room to build (locker, gears, steering, shafts lockouts or mannual hubs, etc etc). crap adds up. Look at my build 60 on my sig for some reference. Good luck and again thansk for your services!!

Beauty I started with:

then a lot of elbow grease:

and then blingified:

geberhard,
planning on putting this under an XJ along with a 14B FF in the rear. Plan is to run tires in the 37 to 40's range (still undecided) and do some major wheel well reconstruction. Having trouble justifying putting that much work into a cherokee though. I really want a YJ or TJ but that doesn't fit into the budget right now. I can always build my cherokee and then when i can afford it buy a Wrangler and transfer all the goodies.
