: F-Toy #127
4x4Taco 04-11-2010, 05:39 PM Well I have been working on it for about a month now, so I figured it's about time to start the build thread for it.
I don't have my chassis yet (kind of annoyed at the 3-4 week promise time and yet here we are 6 weeks later and nothing)...so I have been working on prepping for the chassis.
Anyways, here goes...

So now that I got a lot of the cutting done I figured it would be an ideal time to get a plasma cutter, should be here in a couple days :P
Soon as I get my inboard stuff from ToolBox Guy and my chassis from hendrix I should be rockin.
Shouldn't have any problem getting this done by next season (wonder if that statement will come back to haunt me as it has so many others...???)
bunchr1 04-11-2010, 06:51 PM I hear ya about that wait time... I put my deposit down more than a month ago and still nothing.. But I was told it was gonna be a while. I haven't even started yet. I don't want to tear into my 88 without a chassis on-hand...
ghettowheeler 04-11-2010, 06:59 PM Yeh I was told 3-4 weeks to and its been 6. I'm hoping they will be done this week for the both of us. Your build is looking great. I also started with a 1st gen 4runner.
ghettowheeler 04-11-2010, 07:04 PM looks oh so familiar

Right now is the time to get stuff like filling the holes in the frame (if you are going to do it...tons of work), and other basic prep work...I have been working on it 4-5 days a week for weeks and just today got the engine back in...
Unless you have a place to store the chassis other than on top of yoru frame, in which case you are more fortunate than me.

Thanks for the compliment, we'll keep our fingers crossed!
4x4Taco 04-11-2010, 07:08 PM Lol, even to the point that I think we have the same floor jack. Did you cut your body off or did you find a buyer? I was fortunate enough to have a guy that had just bought a previously rolled 3.4-swapped 85...so he wanted a body.
Spacecwboy 04-11-2010, 07:19 PM wow, things must be slow, or they are building the X chassis. I got #125 a month or so back. Actually took it out on its maiden voyage. i got the same run around about 4 weeks, mine was 7 weeks for delivery, but what you gonna do? definately worth the wait! do all the prep work before you get the chassis. that way you dont try to get ahead of yourself. Finish step 1 before you start step 2! if you have any questions this is a great place for ideas. If you get hung up shoot me a PM, I am still finishing mine up but may have just wrapped up something that you need help with.

5 of us lifted the body off. It was to beatup to sell so it went to the dump.
4x4Taco 04-12-2010, 09:10 AM I just got an email saying Hendrix had just gotten the tube order they have been waiting for a few weeks on. They said 2-3 more weeks because mine is 5 down the list of 14 to build...sucks for us ghettowheeler
wheelingyota 04-12-2010, 11:33 AM where did you pick up those motor mounts?
4x4Taco 04-12-2010, 11:39 AM where did you pick up those motor mounts?
Hendrix...$59.99 I believe. I actually left the frame rail topper tab on them...so I didnt move the engine down any, but I have to redo the trans xmember brackets lower so I am wondering if I should move the engine down with a new set of mounts or not...anybody have any input on whether that 1" down is THAT important?
ghettowheeler 04-12-2010, 11:53 AM Yup I just got the same email. I am 6 down on the list. 3 weeks out.
SanDiegoCJ 04-12-2010, 03:34 PM I'm not a Toy guy, so I have to ask where that crossmember came from.
It's pretty slick looking IMO.

4x4Taco 04-15-2010, 09:27 AM Do you have the Ebrake kit for the crossmember or you getting before you get it done?
Hey Chase, no I don't have it...I didn't save the e-brake cable from the body when I sold it...Wasn't really planning on running an e-brake, that could eventually change though. Does yours have an e-brake?
desertoy 04-15-2010, 01:29 PM The frame looks great 4x4taco. Your definately getting there. I know it sucks to wait for the chassis but honestly, all it does once you get it, is take up space in the garage while you are doing other things. EVERYONE that gets their chassis before they start their build ends up installing the chassis before they need to. Once it's welded on it's a PITA to work around.
I talked to Hendricks yesterday, he only sold a couple chassis in the past year. After KOH the phone started ringing and it hasn't stopped. He told me that he had 15 Formula Toy orders right now. He had to re-order steel and it took twice as long to get the steel as he was told so he's in the same boat as everyone else. He ordered the steel anticipating on getting it a certain time and it took longer. Just be patient with him. he's a stand up guy and a one man show.

I was driving my buggy around at KOH and had 3 different people stop and talk to me and said they were thinking about building FToys. It's pretty cool to see so much interest.

My problem is I don't really know where to start fabbing stuff up until I have the chassis to line everything up to... The only things I know what to do is the frame length and the floor framing... I don't even know how where to put the seats or anything... Do you have advice as far as how to know where things are going to go before I get the chassis?

Yes, people seem to really like to look them over and ask how they do. I enjoy talking to folk about them.

I am in the same boat. Scared to build anything else. I think I will start cutting into the wiring harness this weekend. I thought about building the floor framing but I hate redoing stuff.
Spacecwboy 04-15-2010, 06:43 PM i would wait on the flooring, you will want to build it so that the seats are able to be mounted on parts of the flooring and will obviously need the chassis on to get it right. You can do drive shafts, lower and push the engine back 8", clean up the axles, rebuild them, work on any engine stuff you need to wrap up. start getting (or making) brackets, gussets, plates, etc. get all the sheet metal bought and in for your floors and skins, pick up your paint, any new lighting there is a LOT of leg work to be done before getting the chassis that will save you headaches later on. i spent a lot of time on the steering set up. Gotta figure out what all you will need to make it work.

Got the engine done, need to do the axle and will probably start on it Sunday... Will get the metal delivered once I have an idea what I am going to use... Only lights I need are for brakes... I have a lot of it done already :) Thats exactly what I was thinking about the floors related to the seats...
MT4Runner 04-16-2010, 07:43 AM Wiring harness would be a great thing to work on, ghettowheeler.
Order your 12voltguy.com panel
Unwrap/unloom everything on the entire harness.
Strip out all the "non-essential" and body harness stuff you won't use in your buggy--headlights, brakelights, marker lights, horn, any dash harness stuff that runs through the same loom...wipers, heater fan, etc.
If you have to cut a wire, use masking tape and write down what it was connected to--on both ends.
You won't have an inner fender, so find a new spot for your EFI relay panel (probably next to your ECU on the firewall)...
...and if you're going propane, there's even more you can eliminate.
I think you already eliminated a lot of vacuum lines, IIRC...but that's something else 4x4TAco could read up on.

Mine is a bit different because I am going propane...so pretty much all of my vac lines are going away...been waiting a few weeks for my 12voltguy delivery too :)
losekannon 04-16-2010, 09:27 PM I have a line lock that is on my rear brakes for an e-brake on the trail. The only problem is my rear brakes suck. :D Changing up to rear disk soon and getting a set up that has an ebrake in them.
4x4Taco 04-16-2010, 09:37 PM Nice I am going to go to disc myself eventually...probably not this season though, I will be all tapped out on upgrades by the end of this project... :)
MT4Runner 04-18-2010, 11:04 AM Chase and 4x4Taco, have you tried upgrading your master cylinder and brake booster? A double diaphragm brake booster and a 1" master cylinder is an instant upgrade to stock brakes. My drums work great.
4x4Taco 04-18-2010, 04:15 PM Have a few friends that have done that, I have not as of yet...
losekannon 04-20-2010, 11:07 AM I got the bigger booster, just haven't changed the master. Going to do that when I change the rears to disc. :D
4x4Taco 04-24-2010, 10:38 PM Got a little more work done tonight.

What was the problem with the plas?
4x4Taco 04-25-2010, 10:04 AM What was the problem with the plas?
Don't know, they spent an hour on the phone with me, we did everything they could think of...including changing the HF electrodes that fixed yours. They ended up replacing it, the new one works great.
4x4Taco 04-25-2010, 10:05 PM I got that plate in place today. I also took off that paint and repainted the front crossmember because I accidently used gloss the first time.

4x4Taco 05-03-2010, 06:56 AM wow thats high! hope you are going to drop the chassis quite a bit lower...
LOL I was wondering how long it would be until someone said that. It is sitting on top of pipes that are on top of my frame rail...almost. The front pipe is sitting on top of my trans so its a good 4" higher than the frame rail + the pipe....so ya you could say its going down. Plus when I inboard the whole height will drop too :)
EDIT: I went back and looked...you are right it is damn near impossible to tell how high that front pipe is (or even that it is not right on the framerail). Look at the shadow that is under the pipe for a reference to how high it is :)
4x4Taco 05-08-2010, 11:39 PM Got the mounts welded on and the chassis set on the mounts tonight :)

4x4Taco 05-09-2010, 10:30 AM Damn dude, got shelves? Lookin good.
Lol. My dad put a ton of those shelves around the garage when I was growing up. Now I rent the house from him...I was actually thinking about getting rid of all except 2 of them. I think that should give me plenty of space and cut out lots of the crap that is in the garage :P
EarlKann 05-09-2010, 10:35 AM Have you worked on your seat mounts since you got the chassis? Looks like those chassis mounts got fully burned in, I would have waited on mounting the chassis till you have your seat mounts and head room figured out.
4x4Taco 05-09-2010, 07:35 PM I was in a catch 22, I was told not to do the floor til I got the chassis on, but Its hard to do the seats before setting up the floor... I am short though so headroom is no big deal. :)

Did the Hendrix chassis mounts come with plates to cap the tops?

Why the Rolling Eyes?....
Did I not ask a valid question about the chassis mounts? Just never seen them done that way. Usually they are welded together as an assembly before they are attached to the frame/chassis.
But, I've only done a few chassis', so maybe I'm not educated on this topic.
4x4Taco 05-18-2010, 09:06 AM Aahh.... the 'ol 1"x1"x.120 square tube, overkill floor and trans tunnel.
Ya, but I haven't built a subfloor before so I figured overkill was better than it falling apart on the trail :)
Did the Hendrix chassis mounts come with plates to cap the tops?
Yes, the chassis is just sitting on it right now though so I haven't put them on.

Did I not ask a valid question about the chassis mounts? Just never seen them done that way. Usually they are welded together as an assembly before they are attached to the frame/chassis.
But, I've only done a few chassis', so maybe I'm not educated on this topic.
I think he was rolling eyes because you said I overkilled the subfloor.

Not that you are doing your subfloor/tunnel wrong, almost every F-Toy is done the same way. It's just that it can be done with a little fore thought regarding weight and ease of tranny/ transfer case service and removal.
If you are dead set on having the stucture that bridges over the top, try making them bolt on, or decrease the quantity of the "Bridges". You never know, when the car is finished, if the trans or T-case has to be removed out of the top.
Seeing how this is your first build, and it is coming along nicely, it is impossible for you to see all of the unforseen issues that you will encounter during this. Like I told you before you started, take your time, don't rush, and plan way ahead.
4x4Taco 05-18-2010, 09:43 AM I will read it, thanks. I actually thought I was making it as easy as possible to pull the tranny by going over the top like that. I figured that its kinda hard to pull the trans up through the chassis so it would have to be dropped anyways...no?

It all depends on how you do the skidplate-crossmember.
When I had #20 F-toy, the skidplate-crossmember was good and did its job, it was just not the funnest thing to take out when the trans and tcase needed work, because it had gotten so distorted. The seats had to come out regardless, if my console tubes were not welded in place, then I would've pulled the case out of the top.

I actually have the all-pro xxx crossmember/skid that is not gonna be a problem to drop it all :)

Thats way more helpful than what you said before, I know you have built a few and this is his first. Just seemed like a useless post with out suggesting other ways to build the floor boards or tranny tunnel.

desertoy 06-16-2010, 11:00 AM It's coming along great. I see you have been working with ToolBox Guy on the rear suspension mounts. THOSE ARE BAD ASS!
Instead of using cardboard for template material, go to Walmart. You can buy 3ft square sheets of construction paper. I think it's 3$ for 10 sheets and it works way better than cardboard.
Good Luck.

The aluminum panels you made for the trans tunnel - what made you do them in (3) pieces rather than make it one piece instead? Accessibility without removing the entire trans tunnel?

I went last night but I accidently asked for poster board I was thinking that's what you guys said lol. All they had was 22" x 28" so I didn't get any. Time to go back tonight I guess!
trader 06-17-2010, 06:41 PM I have a brake that you can use. Call Justin for my #. BTW its only 36". BTW you only have a couple months before the night run
4x4Taco 06-17-2010, 10:38 PM Cool if I come across anything I can't survive without the brake on I will get you number from him. Don't worry I will have it done by the night run, I work on it like 5 nights a week :) Got the passenger floorboard basically done just need to drill holes tomorrow I will upload pics in a bit.. By the way I bought a harbor freight electric shear yesterday....I HIGHLY recommend it for anybody cutting sheet! I might end up redoing the trans tunnel side panels with it so I can get a perfectly straight and nice line. Depends how much extra sheet I have after doing what I need.
4x4Taco 06-17-2010, 11:00 PM Tomorrow night I will get the holes drilled and everything solid then get working on the drivers side.

trader 06-18-2010, 06:26 AM I think Brett is your best option. By the time you buy the material and fit the panels, you would be lucky to save any time or money.. After you have the templates, then reproducing them would be easier.

Free advice, 4x4Taco: you might out-wheel a big linked v8 buggy on 42's...but you will probably get stuck following an FToy on 42's! ^^^^^ :flipoff2:
By the way...what's the best way to do skins? Is there a cheap place to order them or do I need to cut them out myself?
I made templates for mine, then had a local seamless siding guy run some of his 26ga scrap coil through a slitter. I only have to cut the angles on the ends, drill the holes, and bomb can the panels. I put all my tabs on symmetrical on right and left, so all the holes line up, and I can drill 6-8 panels at once.
The steel isn't :grinpimp: like aluminum, but it's not $$$$ like aluminum, either, and you can beat the snot out of it, hang it on the wall of your shop to remember a fun trip, and rattle can another one to replace it.
After KOH 10 week, I didn't feel too guilty replacing these:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=501289&stc=1&d=1266292966
(this was mostly from the 2 rocks above the waterfall on Jackhammer. It wasn't hard, I just couldn't get through without laying on my side!)
The steel ones are probably ~8#. Aluminum are probably ~3#. If you're racing, save weight and run aluminum. If you're trail running, go for the beaters!!
4x4Taco 06-18-2010, 07:33 AM Thanks for the tips :P I've run trails with Rod when it was a 4runner, so I am sure it will do fine as an F-Toy :) I wonder if I have a local siding guy that would do the same for me. What is a slitter? When you say the angles, you mean the ~50* (Or whatever they are...gotta be close to that!) right? He gave you rectangles?
MT4Runner 06-18-2010, 08:59 AM A slitter is simply a machine that pulls the coil/sheet through and "slits" it at the width desired. Think of "ripping" a sheet of plywood on a tablesaw. Same idea.
I think the side panels from center of tube to center of tube are about 17.5"??, so that's the width I had the panels slit.
Yes, he just gave me rectangles. I just hand-cut the ~50º angles at the front and back of the side panels by hand with an old school tin snips. (I cut off the "yellow", leaving the "red")
Recessed side panels would sustain less damage, but I didn't order my chassis with the recessed side bars...and I don't like the look of 3-piece recessed side panels. It looks clean with the panel on the outside of the tube--the panel just gets beat up quicker....so the siding solution works!

Gotcha that makes sense about the slitter. I used to have some snips when I worked commercial a/c for a while...don't anymore but I could pick some up :) I don't like the 3-piece either so I want to do a 1 piece too. I googled "siding riverside, ca" and got basically crap....any better ideas how to find a place that would have scraps?
MT4Runner 06-18-2010, 11:43 AM Heck, even a home heating and a/c place would have 24-26ga steel. It would be galvanized, so wipe it with acetone to get the oil off before trying to paint it.
I searched, too.
Here's a funny for ya:
Riverside Seamless Siding (http://www.constructionscope.com/montana/kalispell/287248-a-riverside-seamless-siding--siding-division.html)....but it's in my town.
Here's a big list. I don't know which towns are close to you. Even a gutter shop might have ~17.5" wide coils...around here a seamless gutter runs $4/lf fabricated and installed. $4/lf still isn't a terrible price just to buy it flat.

Yep, still do them. Current price is $125 per pair with or without the foot hole. They are cut out of .050 aluminum.

4x4Taco 06-18-2010, 11:56 AM Ok I tried a few places no luck but I will keep trying. Is there any reason why not to run a hood and roof out of thin steel too since its so much cheaper? It would be painted anyway so rust wouldn't be an issue...

If you were building comp legal, you'd be running a 20ga roof, or 1/8"(?) aluminum roof...weight is comparable.
The metal siding stuff is actually galvanized and has a teflon-based paint. I run the colored side to the inside, since paint won't stick to teflon all that well, and I actually paint the "back" side which is only pre-primed to face outward.
seriousscout 06-18-2010, 04:52 PM i do sheetmetal for a living LOCAL 105,just go to patton steel in ontario they will cut what ever size you want ,if you go with steel cold roll i would use 22or20gauge not 26gauge,really it ant going to matter in the rocks you could run cardboard it will last the same, the aluminum .050 or 18gauge for $125 from brett that ant a bad price ready to bolt on:D

losekannon 06-25-2010, 12:04 AM Little late here with the side panel info, buttt I made mine from 22GA I got from a steel place and used some pneumatic shears (cheapish from HF) to cut them out. Not too bad to do.
But you also want to get some weather stripping from Lowes or Home Depot and put it on the tubes your panels, shit any panel is going to help insulate them from making a bunch of noise that will drive you nuts. Did that to mine and its nice not having all the rattling of the panels and tranny tunnel.

This and quick-pin seat/harness mounts are the best advice that can be given universally on every build!
Look inside some of the Benders rigs--most of those guys run some sort of fabric/fake fur inside their side panels. I think Hendrix has cheetah.

I bought the shears already $44.99 on sale. I LOVE them. I started out using a plasma to cut out the aluminum but it leaves such a shitty edge...the shears are awesome except I haven't yet figured out how to make tightish corners.
Already bought the weather stripping just waiting til its painted to put it on :)

I already got the hitch pins. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/2XAK7?Pid=search That is the cheapest place I found to get them and the only place that had the length I wanted...they went up in price a little since I ordered them last week though.
seriousscout 06-25-2010, 09:06 PM if you got a shear you should be able to cut almost a straght 90 this is a electric shear , did you get the one that looks like a drill if so its called a double cut, to cut 90 you have to go two ways, not good for cutting a small radius shears are
4x4Taco 06-25-2010, 10:37 PM Ya they are double cuts. I knew that I just thought they were only called that by the construction guys I used to work with lol. I would love to have a shear like that but I bet they are expensive huh?

want2wheel 06-29-2010, 03:46 AM You could cut the end off of the cable and use a new cable end. They are avelable fron the parts store. The other option is looping it back and using a clamp to hold it. That will look bad, but it might work. Rob
TOYROVER 06-29-2010, 04:50 AM Should be able to adjust it out on the other end.

I didn't know that, I will have to look into getting a new end...from what kind of parts store, autozone? Or a hardware store?
Should be able to adjust it out on the other end.
I checked both ends and there is no adjustment. I tried adjusting the only thing you can but I realized that just adjusts the black cover.
want2wheel 06-29-2010, 11:17 AM By adjusting the black cover you are adjusting tension on the pedal.
Yes, they are in the "Help" section of most parts stores. The other option is cut the end off. Find a nut that is the correct size OD as the end you just cut off. Then weld it onto the cable with a mig or Tig.
The ends that you can get at the parts stores are a brass barel with a screw in one end and a hole through the center. The cable goes through the hole and is held in place by the screw. Rob

4x4Taco 06-30-2010, 10:50 PM Well tonight I picked up my new ice chest...I got a steel (yes, I know I spelled it wrong, pun intended :P). Coleman steel ice chest from Sports Authority. It is on their website for $10 more than Coleman's ($229.99). I called and finally found one (I tried wal-mart, big 5, home depot, target also)...I went to get it and it had a mark down sticker on it for $169.99 so I was super happy. When I went to pay she said it was on sale for $135.99! $147 out the door. Here's a picture of the layout of the rear of the f-toy.

4x4Taco 07-01-2010, 11:56 PM Ok so tonight I got the shocks tacked in and I need some input. The way they sit right now they have 4.5" uptravel and 7.5" down travel. My rear is a couple inches lower than my front, and my front has about 6" both ways so they are setup pretty similar I think. I think I will need more on the downtravel than the uptravel since the rear of the rig sits so low...is that wishful thinking? I would like to know if you guys think I should rotate the upper mount around the rear seat tube to get more uptravel and less downtravel. Thanks!

What's your uptravel/down travel without the shocks? Have you done the "engine hoist flex test" yet?
What size springs? 5"?
I have 15" BBCS shocks, and have them set for about 6-6.5" uptravel (rod showing) and the rest for droop.
"Hobiesaid" that more uptravel is better--even with more lift--as your rig won't hit the end of its uptravel and flop you over. Since I went from rears all the way around to 5" AP up front / 3.5" Davez springs in back, I definitely flex more, yet don't feel less stable.
Rod--I really like your hood bars. I wish I had kept mine as low. I plan to change them somewhere in the future.

Fawk 'em!!!! Its for the dog. :D :laughing:
4x4Taco 07-07-2010, 09:20 AM Ya except the fact that I dropped the propane mixer and broke the sleeve that goes to the throttle body, it would have been running by the end of the week. Carrie's lathe is broken so I have to wait til next week to get a replacement unfortunately. Back seat room sucks. I went with a split X in the back instead of an X right down the middle to try to give a little more room. I actually am planning to take out that back seat and put a single seat back there next year. Once I get a little back into the savings account, this project has done a damn good job of draining it :)

zman2day 07-12-2010, 02:48 AM Got a ton more done today.
Looking good, busy weekend :beer::beer:
4x4Taco 07-12-2010, 03:42 PM Very busy. It is amazingly time consuming just doing little stuff like rock lights and mounting the heater. Should be running in a week or so hopefully.
MT4Runner 07-12-2010, 04:53 PM Mojave heater?
I have a 4Runner backseat heater/fan I haven't installed in mine yet.
4x4Taco 07-12-2010, 05:02 PM Ya Mojave

What style of harnesses do you have?
The snap-in type ends (require a 7/16" eye bolt) are a lot quicker to pull, especially if you have quick-release seat mounts with double-shear tabs.

I didn't want to drill my tubes, so I used 7/16" hardened binder chain links welded in to snap my harness ends to. I think you can find these separate from your harnesses and strap it into the harness with the 3-bar slider.
4x4Taco 07-15-2010, 09:11 AM My harnesses bolt on.
4x4Taco 07-18-2010, 11:42 PM Added some supports

4x4Taco 07-25-2010, 09:46 AM Hurray it runs! The idle screw was so short it wasn't touching anything to keep some fuel flowing. You guys are right, the best day in a build is hearing it start :)
4x4Taco 07-26-2010, 12:06 AM Got everything wired up today and got to drive it down the driveway and back up today :) Woulda gone farther but it was piled with tools and I didn't want to dump them out lol.

Baja Designs 4" HID's
My friend Joey's, he isn't active on this particular forum except for reading it I believe. It was built by a guy named Vince in southern California.
Shakedown on Sunday morning, night run next Saturday.
4x4Taco 08-16-2010, 07:09 AM Well, for a shake down run everything went pretty well. The clutch fluid hose was sitting against the mount of my rock light and the bouncing caused the sharp mount to puncture the hose. Also I lost a nut off one of the bolts on the alternator. We got to the top of the highest mountain/hill that we climbed and I parked on the rock...went to push in the clutch and heard a noise, I investigated and it was air going through the hole after all the fluid was pushed out already. No big deal I just shifted without a clutch on the way back to the truck.

The night wheelin looks fun.
4x4Taco 08-15-2011, 01:24 PM Yes I almost never use the shoulder straps but EVERYBODY uses lap belts when the boat is in motion.
