: New EPA rules will affect motorcycles....
Crowdog 09-24-2001, 08:18 PM EPA to tighten emissions standards for
boats, ATVs
Chicago Tribune
Sept. 24, 2001
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced plans to impose
pollution-control restrictions on engines used in powerboats, snowmobiles, off-road vehicles and the
like.
Though the federal government has long applied pollution controls to automobile engines, the non-auto
engines have escaped restrictions until now.
According to the EPA, they account for 13 percent of the hydrocarbon emissions, 6 percent of
carbon-monoxide emissions and 3 percent of the nitrogen-oxide emissions from mobile sources
spewed into the nation's atmosphere.
EPA Administrator Christie Whitman said last week that the restrictions pending under her new plan
would reduce carbon-dioxide emissions from non-auto vehicles by up to 56 percent and hydrocarbon
and nitrous-oxide pollution by as much as 80 percent.
Engine types to be affected by the new rule include:
• Non-road engines used by industry to power heavy machinery. If adopted as proposed, her rule would
impose nationwide limits on these emissions by 2004 that are similar to those adopted by California.
• Recreational diesel marine engines used in yachts and smaller pleasure craft would be subject to the
same strict controls applied to commercial vessels within two years.
• Off-road motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles. The rule would seek to make manufacturers switch from
two-cycle to four-cycle engines, beginning in 2006.
• Snowmobiles would be required to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon-monoxide emissions by
30 percent in 2006 and 50 percent in 2010.
An EPA spokeswoman said imposition of the new rule must await a 60-day public comment period and
public hearings Oct. 24 in Washington, D.C., and Oct. 30 in Denver.

i know but i hate the starting problems and all the other stuff that goes along with it, 2 strokes are simple. doing a top end in a thumper is more complicated. ill probly eventually end up with one
Monkeyboy 09-27-2001, 01:38 PM The 4 stroke top ends don't wear out like they do on them overgrown chainsaw motors.
I have a 1983 4 stroke thats been beat and rode hard it's whole life and it still don't need a top end job.
How about the CRF 450 for all of yuo two stroke die hards. That bike is spanking the likes of you guys right now.

you got that right. My stock 426F spanks 2 strokes that are piped and jetted. I saw that 450F, looks pretty tough, i probably couldn't hang with mine stock. though i do have some money for a pipe i'm thinking of getting. It'll take some time, but the thumpers are getting better, they aren't that hard to start. But i been ridin them a while.
Kyron 09-28-2001, 07:29 PM Have any of you seen a picture of the CRF450 piston??? OMG it has NO skirt!! I want to see that thing last!!
About 4-strokes lasting longer than 2-strokes, its all a matter of how much power it puts out, Like a stock VW motor compaired to a hi comp one...... SO its all realitive

66CJdean 10-03-2001, 07:16 PM Your 426 beats 250's wow thats cool.
Just giving you sum shat
The new 400 and 520 KTM's are clai grean sticker legal this year so that is way cool and I would bet the 450 will get its emissions down enough to be legal here soon too.
Kyron 10-04-2001, 01:00 PM Even worse, from what I've heard.. the new 450f WILL NOT pass the sound test.. and that the rangers will be carring the db tester and looking for "them loud 4-stroke's"
lets at least hope the rummors about a more off-road frendly CR450 with lights and electric starter are true, cause them greenies hate mountain bikes also
RobTB 10-04-2001, 03:38 PM I never said 426 beats 250's. I said the 426 was akick ass bike a thumper. Dont make up some comment.
