I'm looking at buying a 4wd output shaft for a TH400.
My question is: What is the length of the output shaft for a Chevy 4wd TH400?
Does anyone happen to have a picture of one?
Are "all" 4wd TH400 output shafts the same? Or did GM and Dodge use different versions?
Thanks in advance,
John

There are 3 or 4 tailshafts for the TH400, the length changes based on the t-case used. I have a 400/205 combo and the tailshaft sticks out of the back of the tranny 3 1/2" and it is 32 spline. This particular tailshaft is also used on some 2wd versions with a bolt on yoke, I know this because my tranny originally came out of a motorhome.
Dodge never used the TH400 but Jeep did. I have a friend that has one in a J10 with Quadrajunk and it has a long (probably 8" or 10") 10 spline tailshaft. Of course, his bellhousing bolt pattern is different from my Chevy.

Good info nvrenuf.
Unfortunately for me, I'll be buying the shaft without the trans so I won't know how far it sticks out :(
If you happen to know the overall length of the shaft, I'd appreciate it.
I'm hoping to get the right 4wd shaft the nice way.... otherwise, I will prowl the junkyards with a BFH and a chisel and may god have mercy on the tranny I find:D :D

Which transfer case are you hooking too? 203 is much shorter than 205. I think the 208 is close to the 205 length but a little bit shorter. I have a 205 and a 203 in the shop that I might be able to measure. Not sure if there is enough room or not to get a tape in there ???

Hmmm... good info. Unfortunately, it tells me something I didn't want to see: NP203 and NP205 shafts being different :(
If you could measure the difference between the two, I'd appreciate it.
