How tough is it to pull the TC on a 75 fj40? Theres a fair amt of room ot work under the truck (lifted/tires, etc). I have the normal air wrenches. do i need any SST's or stuff?

Can i leave the tranny in? How hard is the rebuild with the kit's sold via specter, maf, etc..?

thanks guys. er, and girls.

oh yeah. is this do-able in a weekend? (the removal, rebuild, replacement)

I've heard of some stories of guys spending literally 12 hours trying to separate the TC from the tranny... any truth to this?

It should come out pretty easy w/ out pulling the tranny, depending on your cross member setup. barring any stuck bearings, missing parts etc.. should be able to get it done in a long day no problem. if the t-case is stuck just apply more pressure!!! (I've never had that problem.)

Pulling the tcase off the tranny is no biggie, even when still installed in the vehicle - a 2 banana job - dont forget the two bolts inside the case (accessed by removing the inspection plate). Sometimes the tcase is difficult to remove because the input gear sticks on the tranny output shaft, but a regular puller should help out there. Never re-built a case, so cant comment on that, except to say, it is not a very complicated design, so cant be that bad. Good luck!

Not too tough to get out...
I usually pull tranny/t-case as a unit.
No jacks, just lower it using the cage as a support.
(If you have a cage)

Have you done this type of work before?
Do you have a shop manual and skills?
Toyota Factory manual is the best for this type of work.

No problem sepperating the case from tranny...

Use a puller with flanges that can be attached with bolts.
(similar to a steering wheel puller but bigger)
Bolt the puller arms to the t-case where the output shaft cap for the tranny is and push on the tranny shaft with the puller.

Never had any problem with this method.:D

Caution: DO NOY USE AN IMPACT ON THE PULLER

I could do this in a day..... (or a few hours)
I never do;)

To do this in a weekend, you need ALL possible parts or dumb luck in order to have all the parts you need without buyin' many that may not be needed.....

Take it out...

Clean and inspect...

Buy whay you need and assemble and install.

If you still have the stock rear crossmember and a four speed, space is sometimes an issue. When I pulled transfer only on a 76 and a 78, I had to remove the rear motor mounts (on the bellhousing) and lower the motor and tranny to allow the transfer to clear said crossmember. HTH

and make sure that u put the case back to gether with the 4WD lever on so that thingie, that comes out from the top, wont fall in the case and make u pull it off again
