: Comp legal question

Wondering if this modification to a formula 4 chassis will exclude it from being comp legal? Everything else on the vehicle meets current ftoy specs, and working on the firewall/trans tunnel currently to make it we-rock spec.

This mod was done by the previous owner, and is going to take some major re-working of suspension/floor/rear seats/driveline to change.

Just looking for input.

I have no authority to rule on this. My guess would be, that since its a major change to the chassis, it wouldnt be allowed. Only exception I could see would be since its a form4 chassis, and not allowing a shorter wheelbase than a normal ftoy, it MIGHT get rules OK.

It looks like they just cut a piece out of the chassis, flipped it over, and welded it back in.
So technically, it isn't removing any part of the chassis, it's just tweaking it for clearance. Right???:D

The wheelbase is 112 I think.

ya that wont fly... i am not on the board of directors anymore as that has been abolished but i am pretty sure the rules state that you can modify the chassis. the rules were not written to to make the 4 seater chassis exempt from any rules.

What everyone else said. But sense it doesn't give you and advantage I would think you could get an exception.

If you can get Lil Rich to ok it I don't think that any competitors will care.I know I wouldn't

Mike, do you recognize the chassis? It was purchased in Apple Valley, but don't know the chassis number. I will have to get a name of previous owner.

Mike, do you recognize the chassis?

That's a pretty small pic, and for some crazy reason most of the F-Toys out there look really similar:D:D:flipoff2:

I would say go to the comp, talk to the other competitors, get them to agree to let you compete with an exemption. Everyone has to be on board. Worst case scenario, you can still compete, you just won't recieve any points for the series. It's never a problem unless you win.

Agreed... show up.. I wouldn't see any issue here... being that it's a longer Formula 4 chassis.

....and I'm pretty sure any reasonable person would see that it wouldn't give you any kind of competitive advantage.

Thanks for the input. I was just looking for some insight on whether the group thought it would be good (or if they would have a problem with the mod).
Sure hate to haul it 1000 miles just to hear "it doesn't meet the requirements, so you can't run".
Points aren't an issue anyway, at least not this year.

MD, this one kinda looks like the rest of em too, but I'll bet you might recognize it,:flipoff2:

I remember that custom but don't remember his name. Shoot me an e-mail with his name and I'll look up your chassis #.

The only thing that will keep you from competing is safety violations. Comp legal issues will just keep you from getting points and purses.

Two of the four f-toys at Oroville were four seaters. I would say this is a small advantage over them so there could be some objections. I would hope not because the class needs more people in it and I don't think the chassis mod will make any differance what so ever.

After seeing the issues that the 4 seaters were having with break-over on the tubes, it may be a small advantage with wheelbase, but the departure on this rig is horrible. The shackle mounts are about a foot forward of the rear x-member. Give a little/take a little.

 So is the frame extended in the back???

If its a vote, count me in with everyone else i say let it ride, and good luck.

There is what looks to be an extension on the rear of it, but it is the same length as the chassis. It could be factory, but I dont know. The front hangers have been rewelded, so they may just be moved forward.
The rear tires (37's) currently hit the upper section of where the tube is cut out. On mine, I dont hit that tube at all with 40's on my rig.

I think either the springs have been moved forward, or it has shorter springs.

You remember Mike. It's your buddy. The guy that had Jerry modify the chassis because you told him to use the wrong frame and the tires hit :flipoff2:.
At least that was the story he told me :p.

IIRC That one was bulit on a 4Runner frame with the rear suspension in the stock location and then they moded the rear down bars to make room. Kinda of an odd build. I had seen some pics of it and read a little on it on Victor Valley 4 wheelers website in a build thread. I'll see if I can find the pics or thread. Don’t know why they just didn’t relocate the rear springs to clear the bar, I think there was enough frame back there to do it cause they didn’t cut it down.
Looks different, but don't see how it can help or hurt in a comp so don't see why it would matter cept for the rules say no chassis mod. Thats what is keeping me out. :D

EDIT> Guess they have a new website and there isn't a build thread anymore for that Ftoy

Anyone could make a longer-wheelbase FToy and still be legal. It's your own choice vs. break-over, but not a comp-legal question.

The frame can't be shorter than the chassis, but can be longer--you could run an FToy chassis on a full-length xtracab frame and 113" wheelbase, and I can't see how it wouldn't be legal per the rules.

I feel you there, Chase. I don't think your backseat headroom mod would be any sort of a competition advantage. I would think your upper "d-pillar" bars would be legal except that you cut out the original diagonal bars. That said, the pics posted do show something "taken away" from the original chassis. Where is the line drawn?

I am just trying to talk the owner into hitting the SLC werock, and the Old School Crawl in Ut next month. The SLC event is really the only one he needs to be class legal for.

Need more competitors in the ftoy class

Bringing this back to the top.

Talked to the guy that owns it today and he is SERIOUSLY thinking of coming down for the Grand Nationals. We have everything up to spec on the safety rules, and it meets ALL requirements for the original FTOY rules EXCEPT the rear of the chassis has been modified. I am asking again if any ftoy competitors would have an issue with him running in Tooele. I am assuming from the posts that Lil has posted that he wont be running for series points (since it is over), but will be competing towards the purse.

As a competitor that will be running the GN, I have no issues, as I don't see it being advantageous on the SLC courses.
