It comes off so easy. What are the plans?

Plans are to keep nothing but the hood.....(maybe the grill so fatty will still call it a zuk)
about 150-200' of 1.75 .120 wall tubing, ~94" wheelbase, coils 4 link F/R, full hydro steering, 3 seater (1 centered in the back), fuel cell.................and keep all of my drive train that i currently have.

Ill keep posting pics as i go along, by next weekend I am hoping to start bending some tube to stick back on this thing!
Debating if i should keep the original firewall right now, just to make things alot easer.

Tonight im going to cut the bumpers off....then start cutting pieces of the body off....then the seats and dash come out!

That gas tank is a pain in the ass to deal with!!

shiiiiiiiiiiiit we got almost the whole rear tubed in tonight... 2 more cross braces and the fuel tank mount's and the only tube work left is the nose clip... you better take some time off work and get busy beeeeeeeeeootch!!

Im taking off to Los Angeles tomorrow.....will work on it in the morning....Next weekend there will be tube on the buggy though!

Yeah thats kind of what I was thinking when 3 evenings worth of work...and this thing is stripped..:D

well rolled the zuk out tonight, pressure washed it, and removed the front axle after we put it on jack stands.......Motor and Tcase look brand new again....as does the inside!!

Funny you should say that....I have to put some lag bolts into my cieling so that i can hold the front end up by a strap.

Just a thought...but maybe before you start burning all of those new tubes all the way around you might want to tack a lot of them so when you have to make some changes (and you probably will) it a lot less work.

Well, since i took out the rear frame support and the front one, I needed to put one in there to keep the frame square......but you are right the rest of everything will be tacked on.

Hell, that's the easy part! I just parted out an Eclipse, almost no parts left on it in next to no time. It's building and designing that take the time.

Looking forward to seeing what the hell you are making. Sounds like you might have an overall concept for the vehicle. Care to share?

Sounds kind of like my project.. I kept adding to the design though. Bad idea! :D You might want to spend a little time and write down your main goals on top of that board, and always reference them when you are thinking of adding to the project. Sounds stupid, but it can help a lot!

I am not new to big projects.......I already have all of that

lookin good so far! wish i had the time and skill to tackle a big project like that myself, hell my simple axle swap is turning big project to me! :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Well doesnt look like much, but got quite a bit done tonight.....Stripped the frame down!
Took all of the tabs, spring mounts, shock towers, body mounts....etc off of the frame and ground it down. Tomorrow morning we will go over everything with a Flapper disk cap the frame.....And start bending some more tube!


Oh thanks to OK and to Nutz for the hook up on parts......Ordered all of the gussets and such from the place that you recomended Nuts, and I ordered those springs on sale OK!

And one more for tonight.

Lookin good man! I think you're really gonna like the extra wb, but a couple more inches wouldn't hurt. I really liked 94", but I'm gonna try 108" on for size and see how I like it. 94" was a huge improvement from stock though, just giving ya ideas and some stuff to toss around. Keep them pics coming

Thanks! Its alot of work but it seems to be coming together....
7 days working on it now and it is starting to look like something again.

First thing today we finished stripping the frame down and capping the frame ends.

Then came the bending......Our first 90* bends....

Made the hoop to go around the firewall.

Then the rear of the cab..

And last one, made the side of the cab.....Doesnt look like a whole lot, but there was alot of time spent squaring everything off to the frame.
that and learning all of the math to go along with bending!

nice start dude... so honestly how many pieces ya waste so far :D

BTW... mine's about a week from running :D but who knows how far from driving :(

Keep it up guy's...... I just wish I could get of my death bed and outa operations so I can work on mine:(

When i do screw up ive been able to find uses for the tubing.....Doing pretty good so far for this being our first attemp to bend anything.

Yip I don't see the total length a wast. could be used for tiny spreader bars, gussets and what not. you know the stuff that you would'nt want to cut into the new sticks for.

we've managed to re-use 90% of teh screwed up pieces/pieces cut off in teh re-design, actually everything except a big pile of bends has been re-used :D


wait till you get a few weeks into it and are able to roll it outside to see it away from walls etc... almost like being a new parent (i think)

Well as far as the seat goes, i ordered one from summit...waiting for it to get here....Its a little smaller than my Corbeau's..but ill throw it in there so you can see. I think the back will be a little crowded for an adult to ride comfortably, but for my Girlfriends 7 year old daughter.......it will be more than enough room, and she will have her own 4 point harness too:D

For the winch, im taking a piece of tube from the front bumper to the front cross member for another brace, and a skid plate. Then im welding a piece of plate in the middle and mounting the winch to the plate. The two front bars coming back from the bumper to the hood will hold the roller fair lead.

what kind of suspension are you going to be running? wheelbase? talk about a fast buildup! :eek: :cool:

Well my internet is finally up again....So here are some more progress pics.

The cage is pretty much complete, except for some gusseting here and there...and im waiting to do the rear fenders until the axle and tires are under it.

I spent most of today welding everything up....Making sure that everything was square and plum.....then welded everything....Man thats alot of welding at once!

Total length on this is 12' from the stinger to the rear of the bed....I was 12' bumper to bumper before:D

Wheel base is going to come in around the 96"mark....We will see though...

Bill here is a pic of my Gfriends daughter...she is 7 and about 52" tall and about 70 lbs, this shows you how much room is actually back there for the passenger.

She is sitting on a 4" block, and the seat should sit about this high off of the floor.

Here is another one from the back....

We also were able to clean both axles and prep them for mounting tomorrow:D

Here you can see how i bent the tube out away from my shoulder for a little more protection.....Outside to outside on those are 55"

Got the rear 4 link done....took some time, this is my first one....measured everything about 10 times while putting this in..

Test fit the tire....Looks like ill have a pretty nice departure angle on this too!

I suppose it could be camera angles but it looks like there is very little triangulation of the links? What is the distance apart at the axle and at the t-case? Appears as though it is gunna have lateral movement. Just wondering.

my same thought's

I checked it out and cycled the axle to 45*.....I have about 1-1.5" of rear steer at 45*....and no side to side movement....
We will see, but it looks like it will work pretty well..



The uppers are 22" apart and 6.5" above center line and will sit at 0*

Lowers are 37" apart at the axle 1.5" below center line, and 10" apart at the crossmember and will sit 5* up

At the crossmember the mounting points for the Uppers are 4" higher than the lowers.

And all of the links are 38.5" long

Wow! I don't have internet for a couple months and look what I miss... the coolest thread since I can remember! That thing looks awesome, Shane! I cut the front-end off mine a few weeks ago and plan to tube it in the next couple months. I am also going to tube the back, extend the wheelbase 10", and add 6" to the rear frame (for the shackle hangers). But, until I get to do mine, at least I have something to drool over. :D

Here are a few shots of tonights work.....Got the axles squared to the vehicle and to them selves.........That was a huge chore!!!

Adjusted the rear links while doing then, then built the front links and installed a new crossmember at the front of the Tcase... Thought this would be fully hung tonight, but worked most of the night by myself...

This you can see how wide this will be...

New crossmember.....
And links tacked to it...

Measured my wheelbase....because I lengthened the links a little more than planned.....I will be right at 100"

I typed in "my older thread" nothing came up.

Well here are a few shots of tonights work...

Placed another bar in for support on the bed, Made shock hoops for the coil overs, mounted the coil overs, tested the suspension......Had to move the coil overs cause they hit the tires.........And now this is what we have...

Another.....Not much left behind the tire...

The suspension....

4 link, 3/4 heims at the cross member....Bushings at the axle....(front and rear) 16" coilovers....

With the passenger rear at ride heigth....and the other fully drooped to the end of the shock...

Suspension fully flexed.....No binding, 1.5" of rear steer at full flex, and I dont rub the coils....:D


7" up and 9" down.....

Oh and the links are 1.25" sched 80 pipe.......1.668 OD.

HEAT! HEAT! HEAT! I'm thinking I'm gonna have to buy Shane some beer!

Do you think Johnny joints would make a difference at the diff end
instead of just bushings?

I have read that you get something like 30% added movement
with Johnny joints.

Does it really make that much difference?

Yep he would get more movement from a JJ..... But if you look at the pic above, he looks to be getting enough flex to me:flipoff2:

Here are a few shots of the latest....

Got the rest of the front end hung, 4 link is done (triangulated a little more than the rear), Mounts for the Coilovers are in, Added some support to the rear shock hoop, and started on the last of the bed bending.

The front sits very very close to the rear....the links are with in a degree of the rear ones:D

A closer look at the front shock hoop.....

This needs to be done by new years for put up......I wanted to have everything done and this thing drivable by december first.

And a closer look at the back......The new Summit seat and fuel cell (12 Gal) fit perfect in the back too!!

We are going to try and put the dash in tomorrow, I mounted the front seats tonight, so we can also start the sheet metal.

Things left to do....

Dash, Wiring, Fuel lines, Air compressor with tank, battery, On board shower, steering, get dlines lengthened, sheet metal, hood, winch, mount fuel cell and rear seat...
I think next weekend we will be ready to take this thing out and start testing it....If it isnt raining tomorrow, we will put it out of the garage again and takes some day light pics............It was dark at 5 pm today when we rolled this out..

I know I am rather new at this, but it looks like your coil over stan straight up in the rear, also do you plan on installig a rock steady kick on the axles? I think thats the name. Its the one that has extra support so your axle doesnt sway.
