I have swapped out my 258/T-176 for a AMC 360/TF999. I had the TF999 rebuilt with a shift kit by a guy in a local Jeep club. He was a retired Trans rebuilder, whom I have lost contact with. I recently got the trans in and had a number of problems. The 360 has GM TBI, so i installed a Lokar kickdown cable and set it up by having the max throttle position pull the kickdown cable as far as it would go. The trans shift great from 1st to 2nd, but never hits third or down shifts, even at a complete stop. But i can manually shift back to first or put it in park and back into drive. I then modified the lever on the TBI so that at max throttle i would still pull the kickdown cable all the way, but at no throttle return the kickdown cable as far back as it would go. This allowed me to hit 3rd, at about 3,500 RPM. No downshift though, stayed in third even at a complete stop. I have about 50 miles on the trans from just trying to set it up. The last time i tried adjusting things i added a spring on the exterior of the trans to pull the kickdown lever an additional 1/2" futher back on full return. this changed nothing until I got done with my 2 mile test run. Reverse was no where to be found. I checked fluid level, in nuetral, and everything looked good, color and level. I gave up and returned a week later just to see what happen if i fired up and a trans line blew off. So is the trans bad? Improper kickdown setup?
