So I want to tow my 2000 Explorer 4x4 from CA to MO via tow bar behind a Uhaul. from what I've read so far. Transmission (auto) in neutral, transfercase (1354 manual) in neutral. I shouldn't need to pull the driveshaft as a lot of Jeep owners do, because the oil pump in the tcase is driven by the rear driveshaft output, as per http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/pdf_documents/1354_Manual_TCase.pdf:

According to uhaul, however, if a 91 ranger 4x4 were to be towed on a tow dolly, the rear drive shaft would need to be removed.

Any insight on this?

You are correct, U-haul is wrong.

However I'm a bit confused as to what you're towing... A '91 Ranger? or a '00 Explorer?

If the Explorer, I don't believe that year ever came with a manual t-case. So unless you've swapped one in, you'll need to pull the driveshaft on that (might need to pull BOTH driveshafts, as the front will still be turning also).

Pull the driveshafts.... it is free insurance against possible extreme carnage.

Sorry, yes, I swapped the 1354 in to my 2000 explorer. Thank you for the help guys, if anyone else has any input I'd love to hear it =]

i had that extreme carnage when my front driveshaft u joint exploded when flat towing with my tcase in neutral. front driveshaft then blew apart taking out fuel lines and all sorts of other crap. not fun
