How stable are these? Should I just wait until I find one with a "U" base to it?

i put a 7mge fully dressed on one. thats a 3.0L inline six with an aluminum head. i also wheeled it in and out of the stop for 1-2 months. since you didnt state what motor you will be putting on it im going to guess you will be fine.

Just a four banger for now. My 4.0 in the future. I'm sure by the time I go with a V8 I'll be in need for a new stand.

Just wasn't sure how stable these were. Thanks. =]

It'll be fine. I build small blocks on those. Just take it easy.

I don't think they cost much more than that new. I got one out of a dumpster and welded a piece of angle iron across the front with 2 casters on it. Im a lot more confident about wrestling it around with a motor on it with 4 wheels on it than when it had 3

Used one for a Ford 2.3. Thats a heavy block and it did fine.

Appears to be Harbor Freight based on the color. You should be fine with it though. I've got a mopar 360 mounted to one that is the same style as that and it works well, just don't get real crazy with it. You can always weld on a piece of round stock to the base and put some weight plates over it to prevent tippage. or go with some angle and extra wheels as suggested above.

they usualy have 2 wheels on a 1' wide T end.

i have the U type and it is strong and stable but it is a pain in the ass to put a motor on because the U is the same width as the hoist so you cant just feed it in like you should.

I had one of those 3 wheeled stands and you had to be really carefull when wheeling it around, even with a V6 on it. Bought one of these for $70 on sale one day and it is much more stable and doesn't flex like the little one did:

I've got the same one, works great. Mine's held an AMC 304, an IH Super A motor, and a Volkswagen bus engine that come to mind, and it currently acts as a rotating mount for my HF pipe kinker.
