How do you guys notch short peices of tubing that the notcher won't hold? Is there a trick to getting this done?

I have a pro tools notcher.

1.) Notch.
2.) Cut to length.
3.) :flipoff2:

Plasma or grinder/cut off wheel. Better have a bench vice. :)

Pair a tin snips works for me. I can cut .125 wall easy that way. lol!

Guess I should have been more clear. I'm trying to notch both ends of a 3" peice. The tack welding an extension makes perfect sense... Doh!

Notch one end with the Pro Tools. Cut to length, make a wrap of the notch and transfer to the other side and use an angle grinder.

Or take a longer piece of tube and notch one end. Notch the other to cut to length.

flap wheel. It will save you time in the long run to just make the damn thing the "historic" way. By the time you are done making the tube fit in your notcher, you would already be done with the flap wheel.

This is what I would do.

I use a cheap harbor freight machinists vise clamped in the drill press to notch short tubes or offset notches. Works well.

For something that short.. I just notch one end, cut it to length, clamp it in a vise and grind the other notch to shape in about 45 seconds...

This is what I did and it worked really well. It was easy to duplicate them quickly too. Cut one, slide, clamp, cut another.
