: Adding cable lockers 77 FJ40
climbermike 10-15-2002, 04:22 PM Ok - about to pull of the skirt and add a 40 to the driveway next to the 80. Pretty stock 77 to be exact.
From what I can understand, adding a cable locker to the front is cake, but what's needed to add one to the rear? A full floater?
Yeah, all you folks like Nolen and gang are making me feel like a TS/TV by owning both an 80 and a 40.
Anyway, the 80 is built but I need something a little simpler that I can work on more myself to learn this wrench turning black magic.:flipoff2:
Thanks
Mike

60seriesguy 10-15-2002, 05:54 PM Why cable lockers???
climbermike 10-15-2002, 06:32 PM Because I HATE ARB! I have them in my 80 and have had nothing but problems. Several bad selenoids, bad compressor tank o -rings, switches fall apart, last weekend right before my engine blew  , I lost my rear air seal. Also had several leaks due to copper tubing being too long (assume during the install).
Nothing but problems, so I'm looking for something none automatic that would me as mechanical as possible - hoping less to go wrong. I want to swap out the rear for disc brakes anyway, so .... figure this is the route to go.
Please remember that the only thing I know about 40's is that 4x10=40:flipoff2: .
It'll never be a mad machine like Nolen's, but hopefully capable.
Mike
:flipoff2:
HyCaliberConsecrator 10-15-2002, 07:04 PM SHUT UP and weld them already:flipoff2: It doesn't get any more simple than that. I think you meant that it will never be a "mad machine" like Chuck's, but you should already know that. Well gotta go grab another beer out of my new ARB fridge that I found at work. It seems that some poor sucker never picked it up. Just remember that 4x10 is all you'll ever know about 40's.
ROCK ON!

liftedwithleather 10-15-2002, 07:08 PM Ditto!! Just weld it!!:D
trd55 10-15-2002, 09:41 PM You could always go electric. CV Unlimited has the kits to install the rear electric locker for the 80 series into the 40s and 60s. Try them. I have an electric in my taco and no problems. I have heard if you wheel a lot in mud you might want to take the actuator apart and seal it up better with silicone. Just what i have heard from guys out east and in the south.
Good luck

sixty 10-16-2002, 01:46 PM Dana 60/70 front & rear welded!!! A pretty reliable combo & will cost about the same as installing electric lockers or buying & shipping cable locker & getting a full floater. much tougher also.
climbermike 10-16-2002, 06:18 PM HCC! You should weld your ass because you seem to always be talking out of it :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Stay away from my fridge! Hopefully I get out there next week. The diagnosis on my 80 is the #6 and #5 rod bearings are shot - assuming it's from low oil pressure (maybe a prior shitzy rebuild. Thank goodness I'm not paying for it :D :D .
I just gotta drop this anchor of a front bumper off somewhere!
Later,
Mike:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
kling-on 10-19-2002, 12:47 PM detroit lockers all the way in the frt ,weld the rear if you cant aford 2 of them..:flipoff2:
ShipRekd1 10-19-2002, 06:53 PM mike
definetely weld the rear, and maybe a lockright in the front (if you wanna go cheap). my 85 runner is welded in the rear, and open up front...but gets the job done because of the wheelbase.
many might disagree with the lock right, but i have heard of many guys running big tires (42") in the fronts with just that...and without any problems.
ok, lemme go grab one of those beers from chuck out of the ARB!!!
later

HyCaliberConsecrator 10-20-2002, 09:03 PM A Lockrite with 42"s? ? I think you know less than Uncle Mike does about lockers. Dude, forget about the lockers because you never wheel any place hard enough to actually use them. Talking out of my ass! Watch out boy or your gonna get that fucking fridge up yours! :flipoff2: Gotta go refuel because Jason drank all the beer. Damn that fridge works nice.

HCC & LittleShipper,
HCC - first I'm going to kick your ass once for looking at my fridge. Then I'm going to kick it again just for the fun of it.:D
LittleShipper - maybe you're next, just 'cuz you work with 'im :D
HCC - how about some feedback on that beater?
Looks like welding the rear is the way to go. Special since ARB seems to blow more than HCC.
:flipoff2:
HyCaliberConsecrator 10-20-2002, 10:13 PM Little Shipper:D Dude, That's classic. Can't wait 'til he sees that.
Are you looking for a daily driver or somthing that your gonna mod for wheelin'? If your gonna spend that much coin I'll sell ya mine.:flipoff2: :flipoff2: The truck doesn't look that bad but I'd have him send more pictures for a closer inspection. Kick my ass!?! Why don't you log out and go practice falling down so you're ready when you come to get your fridge.:flipoff2:

I do recall that you were gonna buy an axle that had a lockrite in it that was running 42's, HMMMMMM.......
Lets get another beer!
gunracer1 10-21-2002, 10:06 AM every time i poped a axle in the front, it took out the lockrite, and that was with 38.5 sxs. it sheared the 4 pins. just was a pain in the ass to pull out both axles and the third member for a stoopid birfield. mike
