From Wes @ VORRA:

Brand New Desert Race in North America

All the rumors are true! The inaugural running of the Xtreme Outlaws 250 is gearing up to be a desert race not to miss in 2010.

Race Central is at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, NV this summer on Father’s Day weekend June 17-20. This course is designed by the legendary Rod Hall and winds through rugged mountains and valleys directly East of Reno with Roger Norman Sr’s, Worlds Largest, Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and USA Parkway to the North and Historic Virginia City, NV hosting the pit at the Southern tip of the route. This is the beginning of a history making event that will start & finish in Reno, NV home to The Off Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. This race is one of the big four you will want to Race in 2010, The Grand Sierra is pulling out all the stops for an Xtreme Weekend to remember.

Rod Hall: “The good the bad and the ugly. From a guy that knows. It fits the course, and it will not be for the timid.”

VORRA and GSR announce the Xtreme Outlaws “All Star” Invite.

When Richard Silverman, President and CEO of the Grand Sierra Resort, said “Give until it hurts” I took him up on the offer before he could change his mind. So, here’s deal for all the Off Road All Stars out there that want to test their skills on the only
NEW desert course introduced in recent memory.

Everyone is welcome to enter, but those I’ve nicknamed “The All stars” have a little extra incentive to sign up now. The fastest and most consistent drivers or teams need to RSVP to this invite to receive an All Star Package. Anyone representing Pro Classes that compete in North America that have won their class in a major off road event or are 2009 Class Champions from another North American sanctioning body are eligible. The first 50 confirmed RSVP’s will be booked into 2 complimentary rooms for all three nights of the event. To sweeten things even more, a random drawing for 25 of the 50 All Star entries at the event will get 50% off their entry fees. That’s better odds than you can get at the tables!

Contact us with your RSVP and details on your winning record at info@vorra.netThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or wes@vorra.netThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it before you book your rooms. The top 50 will receive hotel confirmation codes later, but the rooms are already reserved.

I also encourage everyone that pre-registers to tell us a little about yourself and where you’re traveling from. It may be Christmas in June with stocking stuffers for some teams that catch our eye with your story. On-line registration is open!

Care to eloborate a little on the fuel system issues? I thought all of our fuel issues where a thing of the past since V2R, especially since there were none that I can remember at Silver State or up at RCQ.

Just curious as we are heading to Missouri in a few weeks and its going to be hot and humid.

Very long story short.

Dave is running the stock dead head fuel rail on his LQ9, When we would push the car up the long canyon climbs it would raise the temps in the engine area. Then on the other side down the next canyon with little fuel flowing the fuel would boil in the rail and force the fuel back thru the pump into the tank. Since the pick up comes from the top of the tank the, preasure pump could not self prime. I would have to get out, pull off the feed line and blow into the vent line till I got fuel flowing again. Then it would run fine till the next long uphill.

The fix was a well placed check valve and a bit more fuel to make it run a bit cooler.

I did not design daves system but we will put flow thru rails and fix the plumbing as well before the next race.

Yeah when she ran she ran fast as hell and Dave can drive. 4 wheel drifts at 70 on pavement in a rock crawler on pavement are something you have to feel to appreciate.

Too bad it took me so long to bandage the fuel system. I had to be there when it happened to see what was actually happening. We did everything we could think of before the race but I have a total of 25 minutes in the car before saturday and I could not get my head around what they were telling me of the symptoms.

According to the results listed on Vorra's website they show me 5th overall. but if you look at the total time the 7231 gets 5th. The track was awesome, with the exception of the GPS downloads and losers that moved course markers. We got lost a few times and went a few extra miles. I need a bigger fuel tank, had to stop every lap for fuel. It was fun running down Class 1's on those long hills. Glad to see more Ultra4 cars come out and play. AND THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HELPED IN THE PITS!

Congrats to Kevin, Great win!

As Wayne said, we had pretty significant issues from Mile 40 on. On the 4th lap we finally got a full lap without having to stop. It was our best lap and we were only 4.5 minutes off of Chuck Dempsey's (winner) best lap time.

We did that driving 20 miles in Goodby's dust before I punted him and in the process almost rolled off a 120' cliff (sorry Wayne). As we bounced along the rocks doing a 50/50 rail grind, I flatted 3 of the 4 tires.

That was at mile 50. With 3 flats we put 4 minutes on John in the last ten miles to pick up the position.

Huge thanks to a volunteer crew. DSI was a phenomenal crew cheif and the rest of the group came together and got it DONE! Kevin, Don, Brian, Shawna, Danni, Siena, Dallas, and Sergio... you all rocked.

Wayne is amazing. Our communication got better and better all day and he single handedly kept the car running from pit to pit.

What an amazing weekend. Can't wait for V2R

You got lost too? We were lost twice on the first lap. I was using that as an excuse to why you beat us by so much!

I'm extremely happy with our finish! I have had nothing but problems with this car since I built it. I've always felt like it would be really competitive when I got the problems sorted out, but it seemed like I never would. I broke down so early at KOH and Silver State this year that I was still running on the prep work I did 6 months ago. The car worked great on race day! The only mechanical issue was the sway bar coming apart on the 3rd lap. We had a few flats, but that was inevitable on a race course like this. At one point on the first lap we came up on a traffic jam where a truck was broke down. I think there must have been 6 or 7 cars stuck behind him on the one lane road. Without even stopping I put the buggy in low range and drove up around all of them through some good size boulders. That's what Ultra 4 is all about! :D We passed about 7 or 8 more cars during the day Ultra 4 style but didn't need low range for that stuff. The GPS file was way off and the GPS mount got broke off at some point in the day. With maybe 10 miles left we hit something pretty hard and I was expecting a flat. We kept driving and within a few miles I knew we had lost a tire. At that point we were getting close to the roughest part of the course and I knew the flat wouldn't slow us down much. We decided to keep going for the finish with the flat. I started regretting it on the huge hill climb near RM50. All the temps started getting up around 230-240 and it seemed like running on the flat might have been a mistake. Once we hit the top of that hill it was all down hill until the finish. We ran as hard as we could on the remaining 3 tires and came in to the main pits just ahead of Brad Falin. There was a lot of confusion in the pit area about the 25mph speed limit. At the drivers meeting they said the pit was race speed, but during the race there were 25mph/no passing signs. We went 25 and got passed by Brad right before the finish. We later found out there wasn't a speed limit through the pit. On corrected time we still beat him by 48 seconds and finished 2nd in the class. We finished the race without a shred of rubber on the passenger rear Raceline wheel. It was a great feeling to get through a course that brutal! Thanks to everyone that helped us in the pits, and my co-driver for remembering most of the course after the first lap since. Pretty sure I'll see some of you in Fallon next month.

Congrats to Kevin, Great win!

We did that driving 20 miles in Goodby's dust before I punted him and in the process almost rolled off a 120' cliff (sorry Wayne). As we bounced along the rocks doing a 50/50 rail grind, I flatted 3 of the 4 tires.

That was at mile 50. With 3 flats we put 4 minutes on John in the last ten miles to pick up the position.

were were trying to go faster for you but its tough to do 60 miles in front wheel drive only. oh and my back and neck asked me to give this to you this morning...:flipoff2:

For sure, a badass event!!! Running back and forth between main pit, and Pro Pit 4 times made the day go fast. Dave and Wayne are a blast to work for....not once did they seem frustrated or upset toward our crew... they just sat there and waited while the car was fixed, then off again....

I'd do it again in a second:beer:

Huge thanks to a volunteer crew. DSI was a phenomenal crew cheif and the rest of the group came together and got it DONE! Kevin, Don, Brian, Shawna, Danni, Siena, Dallas, and Sergio... you all rocked.

I second this one thanks to you all and to Dave for the e-ticket

he single handedly kept the car running from pit to pit.

For what it's worth, we won the jump off contest. Not only did we win the 4400 class, but we beat all the class 1 cars as well!

The race was going great for the first 40 miles and then we broke the rear yoke. We ran the next 50 miles in front wheel drive with no locker and I flat out ABUSED that front Super 14. I can't believe it held up...I was driving angry.

What put us out of the race was a broken brake line and an oil line that was getting rubbed too thin. The exposure on that course was too dangerous to not have a good working brake system so we decided to call it a day.

We learned a lot as a team and we'll be back stronger and better prepared for the next desert race. It was Trent Fab's first desert race...but not our last!

Man what a race!! I am still digging dirt out of my eyes! Big thanks to Jesse for letting me co-dawg again...better look out for 4499 in Fallon in the dark. Thanks to everybody that helped us in the pits, Rob, Scott, the Torchmate crew(especially for taping and zip tieing the GPS back in place after my dumb ass broke it climbing in thru the front:shaking:), and the several other guys that I met before the race, I really appreciate it. I saw several other familiar faces around the car at one point or another from the Ultra 4 crowd, awesome to see us all throw in and lend a hand where it's needed! Another big thanks to my wife Carolyne, Jesse's girlfriend Amanda, and Jesse's mother for keeping us supplied with water and granola bars in the pits. Thanks to the Vorra crew and ORI for putting together a great event, the Stampede should be INSANE!!

The course was pretty rugged and non-stop, the last lap with no sway bar was definately a little sketchy on the pavement section and some of the side hills. Passing the desert buggies and trucks in the rocks to the side was the highlight of the day for sure, and Jesse pretty much said it perfect when he slammed it back in high range and hit the pipes..."THAT WAS SO ULTRA4!!" Big props to Goodby for an awesome pass in a 90 degree turn uphill!!! Dave was fully getting it too after he passed us on lap 2, car looks awesome, hated to see him get a flat a few minutes later. Congrats to Kevin on the win....damn he is fast!!! Hope to see more and more Ultra4 cars at the races!

This was a great event, I was glad to be able to be there to witness it. One of the best things that stuck out was Yoder coming in 3rd (I think) overall on the first lap! Really felt like it lent a lot of legitimacy to our sport, and respect to the teams out there. Probably the biggest comment/question I heard a spectator ask, was after the Emicks came in from their first lap, "Why are they going back out there, don't they know they can't win?" It didn't matter what time they were going to get, or if the win was in sight, the Emicks showed the true heart and spirit of an Ultra 4 racer. They were in it till someone told them otherwise, and were't going to let a little thing like time stop them. I have a lot of respect for teams that race for the love of the sport, and don't give up. The other impressive thing about that was that they weren't the only team to run that way. Goodby in 4450 ran the last lap in front wheel drive, and still came in 4th! Cole finished 5th only due to the dreaded Ultra 4 Fuel curse, and I'm sure every other team had their own issues.

This was a big push forward, I believe, for the sport and can't wait to see what's over the horizon. Congrats to Yoder on the win, and the place overall, and congrats to all the pits for throwing down and working so hard to get these rigs back in the race!

What a GREAT race and racecourse. Congratulations to all that finished! This was a real test of Driver, Co-dog to pace the driver, preparation and crew to replace 3 plus flats that most had. Thanks to Vorra and staff for getting any race course ready and the event to happen!

Brent and I got lots of video and pics. Definitely lost also. Thanks for the thumbs up...showing us the way.

Rocks? Did I say Rocks in Nevada? I don't think many got airborne anywhere on the course. It seemed too technical for that. 50% of the course couldn't have been wider than 8'. Wider cars running both blade rows. A couple Pine Nut trees stripped of their needles, probably stuck in window nets (Nevada pin stripe).

Canyon two tracks just wide enough for driving (Not sure how Brad threaded them). 5 to 500ft dropoffs on one side, and bladed walls or boulders on the other. Up hills that had to be a challenge to all and I don't know how a class 11 would make them. Their only saving grace is that the LONG uphills wouldn't hold the grapefruit to watermellon rocks that they had to avoid the other 60+ miles. Even "open" desert seemd like it was offcamber or deeply rutted with boulders.

Kevin was always get'in it, as was Dave on the last lap. There was not a whole lot of difference between the 1 cars and the Ultra 4's in the real technical sections, but give the 1's 100 yards of clear track and there was clearly a difference. Ultra's could motor the uphills while the 1's were shredding tires to keep momentum.

In defense of LOUD MOTORS and gear boxes. Knowing that one or several cars are coming is very good warning to get the hell out of the way! From the driver side, there is not a horn or siren loud enough...and in the case of this course.... few places to pass or even safely turn off. Guess that is desert racing.

Never been a real spectator. Awesome, guys!

WOW.... I really don’t even know where to start. Let’s go from the decision to even race 4 days before tech inspection and not having touched the buggy in weeks. So I pretty much just tightened some bolts and checked some fluids. It was too late to try to gather a pit crew, so I went on the hopes that everyone in our class would help me out if I needed it.
The trip started off a little rough, by losing 3 trailer tires on the way up. With 2 of them being within 5 miles of each other. I rolled in to the parking lot on 3 tires and a rim and then proceeded into the GSR with my sights on the black jack table to make some entry money. With the solo mission in full effect and my co-driver having to work until Friday afternoon, I was on my way through tech and back to the black jack tables to cover the fuel.
The morning of the race was interesting because we didn’t make the pre-run and not having the course on the GPS until minutes before the race I knew the first lap was going to be fun. We took it easy and ended up coming through the main pit in second. The second and third laps went well and I started to push it on the last ten miles of the third after I passed Jesse back. The forth lap started out good for the first 2 miles until we hit the dirt and lost rear wheel drive(Atlas took a poop). We stopped to try to figure it out and in that time Brad and Jesse passed us. I wanted to finish so we got back in and I drove the newly modified front wheel drive car to the finish. It was like driving a Honda civic in the snow!

I really appreciate everyone who helped me out in the pits and who offered. All the guys in the main pit, Joe the Toe and the Trent fab crew at pit #2, Dave Coles guys (Dallas and Sergio) and Dave for the love tap on the last lap. Dean from Performance Cryo for dragging around my spare and last but not least Brian Tilton for being brave enough to ride with me for 250 miles!!!!

It was a great weekend as a whole...a little chaos... but at the end, a great race with some great racing times and action. I don't think there was a team that didn't go through 1 to 5 tires!!

It was certainly an Ultra4 course and proud of all you guys for getting out there and showing them how its done!
