: R380 trans cooler
roverhybrids 10-15-2002, 09:33 PM I need a place to mount the R380(5spd manual) transmission cooler. I'm using and aftermarket oil cooler that is 12x2x3 in size.
I have a space for it next to the radiator and behind the Allard inner cooler and A/C condenser. On the side opposite the radiator the Allard has it's in and outputs. I'm concerned with the possible lack of cooling from this position defeating the purpose of have the cooler in the first place.
The only place in the front is below the radiator/innercooler/A/C condenser. The airflow will be blocked from this position by the winch/bumper/skidplate.
Will along the frame somewhere be a more adequate?
Will next to the radiator be fine?
it is for a defender with a 300tdi turbo diesel engine.

I think that's pretty much where it is on my 96 Disco. In front of and below the radiator and pretty much blocked from direct airflow by the winch body and skid plate. As long as it gets some airflow it should be fine as it doesn't really need to do that much cooling anyway.
Maybe you can make a small sheet metal duct to direct some air down and across it ?

m016324 10-16-2002, 12:09 PM why are you putting a cooler on an r380? I could understand a zf but why the manual do you think that you are going to overheat it? But if you want to mount it up I wouldn't worry too much about air flow because it doesn't need a cooler in the first place.

roverhybrids 10-16-2002, 01:30 PM I'm using a newer R380 and it came with a cooler from the factory. I realize that the NAS D90's didn't come with a cooler but I figure it won't hurt:flipoff2:

the Euro spec V8 rovers with the R380 have the oil cooler as standard, as do the Td5's (mine has too). and the military Wolf XD 300Tdi's with R380 also have the oil cooler.
although apparently ALL R380's have the tappings for the oil pipes, they're closed with bolt/filler plugs.

RockRover 10-16-2002, 02:18 PM Hmmmmmm. I'm with Ben on this one...Are you doing major towing or something?
The other thing that comes to mind, is how is the fluid circulating without an internal/external pump?

P.S.: Sean, I managed to fracture (hair-line) my tibia (sp?) while slipping on a 1' piece of 1.75" tubing....And then slaming my shin into a 1' concrete curb...DOH! So your a-arm is shipping tomorrow...It still smarts' too much to walk to the UPS outlet! :p Maybe tomorrow!
roverhybrids 10-16-2002, 02:49 PM the R380's with the cooler have an internal pump
western110 10-16-2002, 04:00 PM All LT77 and R380 gear boxes have internal pumps, that is why you can't use thick oil like 90 weight in them.
FrankenRover 10-16-2002, 06:48 PM Holy sheit Doug, this Rover work is getting dangerous for you (first you cut off your thumb doing the auto conversion, now the dreaded shin breaking incident).
How is the truck coming along?
Billster
ps. Mine is almost done, nahneh nahneh booboo!
FrankenRover 10-16-2002, 06:56 PM While we are on the subject of R380's, here is an interesting bit.
KC and I were prepping the truck to go across the street to the auto lube shop (which filled both diffs, the tranny, tcase, and powersteering box all for $11 -woohoo what a deal), and were trying to remove the R380's filler plug. The damn thing was essentially welded in there with corrosion and had some damage to the torx head anyway.
After stripping out the torx splines, KC welded a 1/2" nut to the plug and we used a 1/2" Snap On impact wrench to get it off (the 3/8" Snap On would not budge it). Once it was out, we decided to take a new plug and weld on a new 1/2" nut very carefully to prevent this from happening again.
KC, the welding stud that he is did a great job with the piece and here it is next to the buggered one we took out.
Nice job KC!

Serious One 10-16-2002, 08:23 PM Great macro shot Blister, but I can see the rip in the background and where it ends at the top of the frame! :flipoff2:
Great focus, color balance and meaningful composition. Just a few details here and there to watch out for. ;)
I am using a ZF transmission cooler as an engine oil cooler on the crew cab.
Or, at least I *want* to do that. I am wondering (not knowing much about things that really matter) if I need an external pump now, or if the internal pump in the oil pan will work enough to pump the oil around?
All this talk of pumps has gotten me thinking.
That's all.
RockRover 10-17-2002, 09:34 AM Ahhhhhh...Okay then...Learn something everyday! The only thing I would consider in using a external cooler on a trail dedicated rig would be the added *complexity* of having something else to break/leak/spew. Personally I would opt to adding a sending unit and a temp gauge first...Then if the temps crept up I would add the cooler...Essentially find a problem THEN fix it.
Thanks for the concern Billy. I certainly have "blood sweat and tears" into this rig now!
I'm VERY close to finishing too. The cage is 99% (still have to burn her in, but all the pieces are bent, fish-mouthed and tacked in place...I SURE love my JD3 and my JD2 notcher!)...My Howe Performance, high zoot, cooler/reservoir/filter arrived with my "worked" pump (bitchen btw). My drivelines still are not in my position! I'm about ready to tell Eric at Six States where he can stick those fat 1350's...Still have to do the break plumbing (cake)...Then the beta testing and *beautification* process (paint), but that's really not necessary! :p Other than that, she's ready.
After returning from Super Crawl, all I can say is I WANT TO COMPETE! (Hence why I don't think too much time painting and making her supper shinny is all that necessary!).
I'll post some pics soon.
Jtisdale 10-17-2002, 03:36 PM Doug-
On your auto where did you add the sending unit or did you get a discovery line that has the sender tapped in already?
Johnathan
RockRover 10-17-2002, 05:50 PM JT,
I drilled a hole in the pan...Right at the return. The sending unit had two teflon compression seals. Temp reads real low all the time....A more accurate read would be in the rear of the pan, or in-line pre-cooler. Don't really care anymore...It NEVER get's over 150-160 (well that was with stock axles and 35" tires)....Might be a bit different now.
