They keep pushing the snowmo trail back as the snow melts... it was back to Independence last week but with a couple feet of new snow it will be a while before its back to Weber lake... Once it gets there I think you can get after it but the snow is deep and I don't see anyone making it for a long time, I was on my sled last week and there is still a 10 foot plus snow pack in most places in the trees

There isn't a specific date, just whenever the FS decides to officially open it up. Two years ago it was open to wheeled traffic on Memorial day weekend and there was still plenty of snow, but the year before it was closed because of the drifts and standing water.

The best thing to do is to give the FS office in Nevada City a call.

Hey Guys!!!!! its the Mad Tow Truck driver from Truckee!!!!!

So I went in to Jackson Meadows today and pulled out a Honda CRV that tried to make it to Jackson Resovoir to try and go fishing, he left at 4:00 this morning and actuslly made it 2 miles short of the damn, but once the sun came out, he found a nice soft spot/ sidehill, and buried the thing!!!!! It took me five hours to get in and out with me dragging the CRV on the back of my Tow Truck, it was like driving in mash potatoes, and with 70 degree weather Im sunburnd!!!!! LOL!!!

Anyway the left hand turn to Meadow lake is CRAZZZZY DEEP!! The bottom of the stop sign is still under snow, so needless to say its going to be awhile until they open the road, I talked to a Forest Ranger Officer while he was harrassing the CRV driver for going past the road closed sign, and they said with no money, they dont plan on plowing the road!!!!

Hope the info helps!!!!!

Stop sign still covered over? :smokin: :D :smokin: I'm envious! Snow is the best! Spring SNOW wheeling can be the most difficult & time consuming wheeling there is. It could take a full day to go .25 miles!!! You won't see any street wheelers or wanbeee redneck yahoos doing this sort of thing for long. They may TRY to travel in your tracks after you break trail though! If we return via our own tracks, we usually have to winch them out of the way so we can go home!:mad3: :shaking:

Hey I don't know if you facebook... but here is a link to all the pictures I took sunday... http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=227199&id=654155148&l=ad05449a5e
I don't think you need to log into facebook this should just work... I don't know how to post to pirate I think I need to join... Anyway feel free to post any of them on here since I can't... Snow report is this... Snow starts 10 feet in and is patchy for a bit then you ride on 8ish feet all the way up the canyon... Meadow at the top of the Canyon still has 4 feet and that is usually gone on my first trip threw... once you pass the turn off for Whiterock lake you get to the long section you can see Fourdyce lake from and that is a scary balancing act on 10 feet of snow drift... Once you hit the trees by Meadow it is pretty side hilly and 8 to 10 feet... Meadow lake is still frozen over and had about 4 feet of snow in the meadow around it... As you head down the trail for winch hill 5 there is one good size water hole with 3 or 4 foot walls... you can see pics of all this on that link... We made it about 200 yards away and just didn't have the energy to head to the top since it was gonna be more winch time back out... Hope this helps :) Don't know who ya are but if you make it to Donner this weekend come look for Horton with Team Rock Limo :)

We need a lot more snow to melt before Sierra Trek, but I have been keeping an eye on the weather and the snow gauge and I feel pretty good about it!

I'd love to make it to Donner, but I'm headed to Asia this weekend and the honey-do list makes it damn unlikely that I'll make it further than the lawn mower can reach! Good luck in the event!

Thanks again for the update,

Randii

It is wide open -- my club was checking the trail (Chris is the Trail Committee Chair and a club member) and they camped up there this weekend and did the 'River Run.' i jammed in by Subaru after the FOTR/RTF/Jamboree work weekend on the Tahoe side, and I saw only one snowbank in the road in one lane, with 15' open road on the other. There were a few puddles still, and there's some drainage still flowing across the road in the last three miles by Meadow Lake. The USFS road is in solid shape with a little bit of washboard on it where people brake. The first 9 miles of pavement after turning off 89 is in great shape (watch for deer!), and the next 7 miles of gravel is solid, wide, and dry... that last 3 miles of county/private has been better and has been worse. It was no problem in my Subaru going faster than i should have, but motorhomes will need to go slow (duh!). No worries otherwise -- i'm really looking forward to Sierra Trek!

Yes -- you'll have no problems with the road if you go slow and pick your lines carefully, as there are a few bumpy/rocky sections in the last three miles to the lake. There's PLENTY of great camping at the lake, with well-developed sites and undeveloped sites.

Unless Fish & Game is stocking again I wouldn't bother fishing in Meadow. I was with a group up there last fall and that lake is basically dead. We saw a few dead catfish floating on the surface and that was it.

Fish have been pretty elusive up there any how. Some years more than most. We usually knock em dead on the catfish but not until the water warms up. My Mom brings a few trout in each year on the "Meadow Cocktail" (worm, power bait and fish egg - all at once!) We've had better luck with the trout along the stretch of lake heading into main camp from the shore and also from the farthest point just off the paid campground site in the middle of the lake. The catfish we've clobbered in the shallower inlets and boggy areas where there are less rocks.

I haven't heard about the fees.

Last year, Camphost Rich was pretty upset over the SUBSTANTIAL fee increases they were planning on imposing. The fees were so much higher, that Rich quit over it, but was planning to come camp near by in the free area.

Anyone know if the charges are similar to last year or did they actually go through with the big price hikes?

pepe

I don't know what the fees were before but during Trek this year they were charging $15 a night plus $3 per extra vehicle. In the past they didn't charge Paid Trek participants to camp in the PG&E campgrounds, but this year they did.:shaking:

Oh and BMFNTOY if you are going to camp in a non designated camp site that dosn't have an "official" fire ring you had better pick up an fire permit.

We showed up a few days after Sierra Trek (can't stand big events). We came in from Cisco Grove, actually came in via the Cisco to Eagle lakes trail they put in.

Camping at Meadow lake was $15 and $3 for the second vehicle.
