: What to swap into CJ front end?

Hey all,

In my last dipsh1t move, I grenaded my D30 front, including a set of Superior Axle alloy shafts with the 297x ujoints, and took out the right knuckle completely.

It seems like I've built the front about as sturdy as you can, with the stronger shafts and u-joints, but I'd like to avoid doing this again.

Seems like a D44 swap wouldn't gain me much in strength, considering I'm already running the bigger u-joints and stronger shafts.

My buddies tell me a D60 would be too big and hang too low for my CJ. I have 38" tires, btw. What's the clearance difference between a D60 and a D30?

Is a D60 overkill?

get a 60 and shave it like a currie and you will have at least the same clearance of a 44 if not closer you your 30. I don't know how you broke those u-joints and not the micro machine sized ring and pinion

hey you never said any thing else about my 60 you still interested? well if you are going to keep 38"s i would go for the 60 any ways even a 44 will brake cause only thing stronger on it than your 30 is the r&p and the housing.

How much can you shave off a 60 and still have housing strength?

84Scrambler -- I think I want it =P How's that for wishy-washy?

About 7/8" shaved off. My shaved 60 rear is within 1/16" of the 44 I took out.

38's? on a '30? hahahha

You pretty much NEED a 60 if you want it to last with those tires. My 36's were eating 44 axle joints... Then a rear R+P, and axle shafts...

I agree... 38's are too big for anything smaller than a Dana60.

The 60 it is, then. I ate 2 dana44 shafts and u-joints that I had in my D30, the alloy ones at that. Bad times =\

How much more clearance does a Reverse-cut front have over a standard-cut? Or is it just the pinion angle? How much pinion angle diff?
