Just wondering if anyone has tried adding an extra disc in the clutch pack in the TJ D44? Mine seems to not work anymore and I have a whole extra carrier with a working trac-loc. Maybe I am dreaming but I am thinking of trying to add another disc to each side, I have heard it will engage much quicker.
p.s- I know I should put in a No-Slip but the extra carrier w/trac loc was only 20$. So it's worth a try at the least.
Anyone?
Thanks

Why don't you TRY it, then let us know if it works...

I've hear of people doing this with various clutch posi units, all seem to agree that it is a major suck-fest trying to get an extra clutch plate in there and put it all back together, some have even used differential bearing shims to set more pre-load. In the end, you still have a limited slip, and there's no limit on how much it will slip. Some of the cone clutch units like the Auburns and stuff work good if you're on the gas, but don't do squat if you're going slow.
Reinstalling the clutches in stock trim is enough of a PITA that I can't even imagine how you could get an additional disc in there ... even if it's worn. Since a Track Lock is always going to wear out, your best options are to either replace the stock discs every 10-20k miles (depending on use) or buck up the dinero for a different carrier.
FWIW, I always enjoyed the TrackLocks I ran ... as long as the clutches were fresh.

Hmm interesting, I picked up a carrier with a track lock for 20$ so I thought that it was worth a shot . I was reading the FSM and it looks pretty complicated with many "special" tools. hehehe I don't know how many of these I would actually need but if I screw up Ill have to throw in a no-slip for now.
Despite what the FSM says, you don't need any "special" tools to change out the clutch packs. The job can be done with common shop junk. However, I don't suggest figuring it out by yourself. You'll likely hurt yourself. Find someone who can do it for/with you.

That's no fun. I am sure me and Phil (1TONJEEP) can figure it out. The trial and error method has worked for most things, we just end up doing them at least twice. :)
Thanks for the info though.

Besides those clutch discs break apart into the diff and litter it with metal. Get it out of there before it damages your bearings:eek:

I am not saying your wrong here but I haven't heard of that ever happening. But I wouldn't be surprised. I jsut changed the fluid in the diff adn there was quite a bit of metal particles.
Oh well, if it kills the bearings it will give me an excuse to re-gear :D
