: Cadillac Northstar

Here is something that I have been pondering, and wishing that I had $3500 for. www.mechtech-ms.com/html/ns_access.html
32 valve,380 bhp, 385 ft.lbs. never fired, all aluminum (395 lbs.). Apparently GM produced too many motors for caddies and they are getting rid of them. I think that there are probably places that have them for less, these guys are into sandrails from what I have heard anything associated with rails are pricey. That is something cruiserheads don't know about:D It looks pretty complete, no ignition, wiring, or chip though.

They are great motors.

Get it and stuff it in!!!

(adapters might be a bit hard to come by though... Northstar to SM420????)

yeah, I don't know what tranny to put in, then I would have to probably change axles. Next thing you know I would have a Grogan look-a-like.:grinpimp: I think the cruiser world can probably only handle one.

Great engone, but, Don't know if I'd want one in my trail truck...
Forget using the starter with the clutch out.
If you ever roasted the starter it is located UNDER the intake.
Coil on or near plug (depends on year) and all sorts of great technology that would suck to fix with what you have on the trail.

I'LL PLAY THE DEVILS ADVOCATE HERE... ONE PEICE ALUMINUM MAIN CAP? PROBLEMS WITH OIL LEAKS? ALUMINUM THREADS BONDING TO BOLTS AND STRIPPING OUT....

JUST A FEW THINGS TO THINK ABOUT...

fork you guys that would be badass in a cruiser....i really never see caddys on the side of the road with the hood up....but then again you could just transplant the onstar button!

ya that twin turbo gives me wood :D

Yeah, it's a cool motor, and I'd love to see one in a old Datsun Z, or a street rod.

For MY trail rig.... no thanks. I want torque... NOT at 3000 rpm, I want it at idle-1500. But, I like to crawl. I can't afford ($$) to "fully get it", thanks to the parts carnage which often ensues on something not fully built yet.

But, one of my reasons for wanting to go propane is that it's STONE simple. less spare parts to carry... I can ditch the spare fuel pump!

I do want to build my rig nearly like Nolen's eventually, except for the high-tech motor.. I just like to K.I.S.S. But opinions are like a-holes...

The big problem with the Northstar in a cruiser is that they have never been offered in a rear driver or in a manual. The EFI system is tightly aligned with the trans. I've seen a street rod where the guy used a hand built intake because he couldn't seperate the engine and trans systems in the powertrain control module. I thought real serious about putting the whole shootin match in a Corvair. A guy in Ann Arbor is doing one. But not in a Cruiser.

Todd... do you know how the new Campbell Enterprises Northstar buggy works then? What transmission and transfer case is it running?

Never have heard of such a thing. Gotta website? Looks pretty cool.
I'm sure folks have made it work, I just don't know what it would take. Money and time, I suppose. :)

Shannon has an entire page devoted to that buggy as well as an mpeg of it burning some serious rubber.

The audio portion alone is worth it's weight in GOLD!!!!!!

if i wanted to go through that much trouble, i would just put the Toyota V8 in it out of a late model..... the drivetrain is already done for you.

Lots of pictures and cool sounds, but I am not able to find ANY specs on the drivetrain. Am I just not looking in the right place? I know it has an aluminum Hi- pinion D60 in the rear, but would really like to know what transmission and transfer case it uses.

It's a huge Fin tranny.

I heard that 80 trannies will bolt up? But I suppose they have a grim T-case:confused:

Yeh, where are the specs? I looked too and although the pics/mpeg are SICK I want specs.

Also when I check out the Mech Tech site they have no pricing info- or is it a "If you have to ask..." proposition?

DUDES

i have some cool info for you all on this combo...

i am doing one soon into my "street/poser" cruiser

it will be turbo aswell though

the box and auto, for a street/poser comes from a 90 series (prado) and sorta hooks right up with the right transfer case, the engine needs to be wired to shift manually though, cause the auto and motor are wired as one unit, and the prado case is chain drive and has no gearing options,

although im sure some sort of surf auto/case combo would have to come close?!?! or maybe marlin has an adapter to go to a minitruck geardrive case from the prado 90 series auto?

i'm only recently figuring all this out myself :D
a guy on one of the local 4x4 BBs, has done a few...

a place here in aus makes a bellhousing too!
castlemaine rod shop
www.rodshop.com.au (i think)

make bellhousings to go from that engine, and can make it custom to go to any box....but at $60 per hour :(

i was thinking about getting one mated to a H55 :D
