I have a 76 cj5 with the 258 in it....Its been sitting outside for a long time. The motor was froze up when I bought it. Anyways im starting to tear it apart and thought there may be a way to get the motor loose, or should I just bag trying at all.
Any Ideas how to get this thing unstuck.....I have already filled the spark plug holes with a mixture of deisel and auto tranny fluid. Anybody got any ideas????

Thanks...

Pour a few cans of Coca Cola into the cylinders and it will free up the pistons. If you just bang on it you will probably damage something that can't be fixed.

I would pull the head off and pour some marvel mystery oil in the cylinders. And each day hit the top top of the pistons with a hammer and a block of wood. After a few days, she should loosen up, unless the cylinders are completely coated with rust, in which case the motor is going to be toast anyway.

I'd pull it out and throw it in a junkyard to rust in peace where it belongs. Throw a 350 in that thing.

When I rubn into a frozen eng, I pull the plugs and pour about 2 tablespoons of Marvel Mystery oil each cylinder. I wait about an hour and try to turn the eng over. If it don't turn I repeat a couple of more times. If it don't turn after the third time, I fill the cyl w/ MM oil and let it sit overnight. If it still don't turn, I junk it.

Is that your answer to everyones motor problems? a V8 swap will cost a lot more than finding a 4.0 inline 6, or another 258. I don't know what your financial state looks like, but if it were mine, I'd try to find a 4.0 and make that work before Id do a V8. Of course I live in CA, and V8's are hard to smog and hard to get street legal. This may or may not matter to you, but for some of us, these rigs are our daily drivers :D

Marvel mystery oil has been around forever, however I've heard it is basically kerosine.

There are other products like seafoam that may work also. Coke is fairly acidic and disolves rust. Put a nail in a can of coke and it will not be there in a month.

I have also heard of poeple putting deisel in the cylinders too. This makes sence because it is similar to kerosine and probably similar to MMO.

Yes.

ESPECIALLY if it's your daily driver. Hell you need power more on the road than you do on the trail (at least for rock crawling anyway You can crawl fine with a 4-banger if your gears are low enough!).

I know it can get expensive, but it can also be done cheaply if you make choices carefully and don't rush it. When it comes right down to it, it's what most people end up doing anyway. I'm just trying to save the guy some money and anguish is all...

A good (relatively inexpensive) swap would be a TBI 350/SM465 combo or maybe a H.O. 302/NP435 if you like Fords.
6 of one 1/2 a dozen of the other if you ask me...

He's not in Kalifornia and is therefore not subject to its draconian smog laws. That state is messed up. If I lived there, I'd vote with my feet and leave.

The benefits of rebuilding a siezed-up shat-the-bed 258 just aren't worth the the trouble of doing it. The guy obviously isn't DDing it anyhow because it's been sitting with a siezed motor forever. A perfect opportunity to take his time and do it right, if you ask me. I HAD a 258. It was O.K. for what it was, but when you really think about it, they kinda suck. Decent torque, but no power and crummy mileage. And every one I ever saw leaked like a seive.

Swap in the V-8. You won't regret it.

I dropped $2000 on rebuilding my 258. Afterwards, I found I could get a complete 5.8L Ford with fool injection and accesories for $700, low mileage, ready to run.

I have the solution I sell you my 258 (which runs) and the manual tranny complete for $300.
We are pulling it this week and you can steal it from me. It has 120K miles, never wheeled.
I need to make room for the three fiddy.
That's how I'd get it loose, but I'm partial.
