Everything I've found says the two stub shafts are identical in length. Can anyone else confirm the fact that the 8 lug and 5 lug (ie f150 vs f250 stub shafts) are the same length?

how about you re-write your question slightly to this:

on FORD-application of a DANA 44, are the 5-lug outers

the same length as the 8-lug outers?

shit... i dunno.... why do you want d-44 junk anyway?

Yes they are the same. They are slightly shorter than the chevy's

Yup, same length, slightly shorter than Chevy's, 9.72" vs. 9.94" to be exact, unless you're talking TTB axle, then it matters what year and day of the week they were built, cuz they had a couple of different lenghts, 9.92", 9.81", and 8.52", maybe more, but who would be dumb enough to ask about TTB axle junk on this board?

9.72 is what I'm looking at and it's not a Twin T. It's out of a 79 F250 and I'm swapping outers. Thanks for the info.

I scored some F-250 outers from a guy to replace my busted F-150 outers.
They were the same joint & same length (slinger to tip), but had a hard time putting it in ......... the axle bottomed out in the carrier, & the spindle was tight on the 'slinger', still a big gap. Some words were said.......... some tools were airborn.
Turns out the ears were longer on the F-250 stubs(U-joint to slinger).
No sure if this guy realy knew what he had, or if its a common thing, but I ALWAYS use F-150/Bronco outers now.

I have a dana 44 out of '78 F-250, and the splines on the diff. end of the long (inner) shaft were warn down bad, but the stub was fine, so i went and pulled the inner and stub out of another '78 F-250. The inner shaft was 1" longer than the first one...and the stub shaft was about 3/4" longer than the first one...which together 1.75" was too much to cram in that housing (the stub shaft stuck about 3/4" out past the hub...so I used the longer inner shaft w/ the shorter stub shaft . It fit perfect, but the groove that the c-clip sits in (the one that holds the locking hub on) was too far out and would have allowed about a 1/2" of room for the hub to slide around in, so I took a dremel, and cut a new groove in the splines about 1/2" in from the stock groove. Turned out alright, but that should answer your question, especially involving junk yard axles, you never know what you'll get.
