Very cool,...I grew up in Tucson. My dad and I used to drag race out at the raceway in the 70's when I was in high school. I wish I could have made it out there.

Looks like a perfect day! Great pictures JT!

Sunday was hellacious:eek::eek:Easily40-50 mph wind gusts with a steady 20mph and just enough rain to make all the dust stick to everything. I was up on top by the start for the SO and several times the wind gusts were strong enough to push everybody around. And of course,as soon as the awards were over the wind and dust went away:shaking:

Very cool picture. Canon right?

Looking at the embedded info in the photos, they were taken with a Canon 5D Mark II with a 24-105 f4.0 lens.

Great shots!

Yeah, they're really great shots.

Are you vignetting them by hand? I thought it was the camera at first, but that's an expensive rig to be losing corners like it is.

Chris Geiger

The 24-105 F4L lens is not really a good match for the full size 35mm sensor of the 5d MII. It is better suited for use with the smaller APS-C sized sensors. The harsh vignetting of this lens can be reduced by dropping the aperture size to above F8 and avoiding the wide end of the zoom range. His shots were taken at ISO 100-200 with the lens held open at f4 with the body in aperture priority mode. In this light, he could up the iso to about 1000 to compensate for F8 Aperture. This would also increase the depth of field and bring more of the background into focus.

Here is an example of the same camera lens combination shooting a wall...

Wow. But Canon says it's supposed to be a full-frame lens? Sorry for the questions... don't know a lot about modern Canon stuff.

Thanks everyone. I'll have Sunday's photos and the full gallery up shortly.

And about the vignetting:

It is done manually. It is unnoticeable on most shots otherwise and can be easily corrected in post processing if that is what you want.

The photos look exactly how I wanted them to.

That's a nice straw man you've got there... shame if somebody were to set fire to him....

I see a shot like this:

http://www.trail-gear.com/bbs/2010-werock-2/IMG_2557.jpg

And the first thing I think is "that's a really great shot that a crappy lens screwed up". The corners shouldn't be that dark, and they definitely shouldn't go monochromatic. It's one thing to burn down the edges to help frame an image, but it shouldn't be noticeable. This one is already a pretty short focal length, but the fall-off at the edges makes it look shorter than it is and pushes the viewer out of the frame.

This one, too:

http://www.trail-gear.com/bbs/2010-werock-2/IMG_2179.jpg

Maybe it's just that you expect the sky to be a certain color, a bit darker overhead and a bit lighter in the distance, but not black at the periphery. If there's too much garbage at the edges, don't burn it away, zoom in or recrop it later.

Again, I like the shots. But I usually see vignetting in a photo as a defect from a bad lens. I don't 'get' it as a stylistic choice.

I find that looking critically at other people's stuff helps me better understand what I do or don't like about the photos I've taken. Hopefully you guys see it the same way.

I don't know how JT see's it, but I see it as him posting pics that he took, and sharing them with others that couldn't be at the event, and some pricks telling him his equipment is sub-par, and talking shit about the quality of his pics...

Now once again....thats just how it looks to me.... not sure how he see's it:beer:

Keep in mind that a polarizer was obviously used, hence making the sky much darker and the original vignetting stronger than it would have been without it, but again, I know what I am doing and they look how they were meant to look.

No problem. You showing up at Donner? You're pretty close right?

Chris Geiger

He's got great equipment, the body he is shooting with costs $2500 and a 24-105 F4 L lens runs another $900. Personally I really like how the Canon bodies render flesh & earth tones. Very strong and rich browns without adding red like the Nikon's sometimes do.

some pricks telling him his equipment is sub-par, and talking shit about the quality of his pics...

Uh... pretty sure that one lens of his cost more than everything that's in my bag... so, no. That's probably not it.

JT likes it as a style choice, I don't. I wasn't sure at first if he was doing it deliberately or what... hence the questions and further explanation. It's just differing opinions about one aspect of the photos. On the whole, I think it's nice stuff.

See, now once you put it that way, you sound a lot less like a photo snob, and a lot more like a guy appreciating others photos:beer:
