Might be looking at one this weekend, and besides a visual inspection, what should I be looking for, with the brake and such? I'm not sure if I'll be able to power it up or not.

If it hasn't been used in a while, you probably won't be able to move the clutch lever in and out. Usually a good way to haggle the price down some, even though it can be fixed with a couple of minutes and some sandpaper.

They're pretty cheap to rebuild. BillaVista posted a really detailed teardown and rebuidl article a while back. Run a search on "8274" posted by "billavista" in "general4x4" and that should find it for you... It was like 8 pictures per each step of the way.

When you put it on, make sure the 3 bolts (1/4-20s?) that hold the top half on are tight. If not, its a good way to break the pinion gear on the motor, and tear up some related stuff. Ask me how I know. :(

sweet guys, thanks... I don't recall during the whole hs9500 and 9.5TI thread if it was mentioned.. does the 8274's design lend itself to water fordings better? I mean, besides the motor and solenoids being up higher..

I have never had a problem with water (or any problems)with my 8274, it has been dunked many times. My dad put it on the Cruiser in about 1986.:D
