it maybe closed cause of the snow. i now for sure that tent ped camp ground near dishpan is closed until may 15 every year. so it may have something to do with that

I'll admit that I haven't kept track of the SB Mtn conditions much since I moved off the mountain, but I'm pretty sure it has been closed since the 2007 Butler 2 fire.

Dishpan/Deep Creek was similarly closed for several years after a fire went through that area.

Sucks cause Holcomb was my favorite BB trail. :(

Still closed because of the fires, from what I have been told the forest service is waiting for some trees to be cut down before it is reopened.

I miss that trail....it was always my favorite up there. I hope they are able to open it up this summer.

Snags are a problem. They also worry about erosion so they'll keep it closed long enough for some of the vegetation to grow back.

Same for all the hiking trails in the Angeles Nat'l forest, the Station fire just wrecked the place.

I thought that dishpan springs was open, and that we had run it last summer? I'm not very familiar with the area.

My buddy at work showed me some pics of the trail head that look like a permanent closure. Thay stacked boulders all the way across and put up a barbwire fence. If it needs work maybe we can get some wheelers together with the forestry services permission and go fix it. I could probably come up with 5 or 6 dudes with chain saws but Im not the one you want talking to officials.

Dishpan is open. It was opened in 05 or 06, I was just using it as an example because it was closed for 2-3 years after a fire went throught the area.

Unfortunately they're not going to do that. Realize that you're dealing with a government agency here. The adopt a trail volunteers have to go through a training with the FS and they probably wouldn't even let those people in to a fire area unsupervised. Besides that, the FS has other concerns besides just re-opening a trail for vehicle use. They are looking at other issues like erosion/soil loss, re-forrestation, water quality issues, etc... In their opinion, opening the area to the public is just to risky due to both possible safety concerns and potential impact to the environment.

Our club did a run on Holcomb last year with the forest service to see the damage and what it would take to fix it up again. The last adopt a trail meeting we had the fs said they were trying for June or July to re open.

That'd be cool. It's been 3-years. Thanks for your volunteer work with the adopt a trail.

Damn, the last time I was up there, we took forever to run Dishpan and by the time we got to having lunch at the Holcomb trailhead, I had to break off. The fire was a few weeks later. I should have stayed there and just wheeled Holcomb. That run is where I met Joey, EarlKann, Troy and a few others. I can't wait to go out again.

You can check out the forestry website, call any of the ranger stations, or your best bet is to call the Discovery Center for the most current closures.

This is exactly why it’s still closed. I’m on the AAT for Holcomb and we have done a lot of work up there. There are still lots of trees that were burned that are in close proximity to the trail that pose a potential hazard to the public. The SBNFS is currently looking at options to remove the trees.

The trail itself is in fairly good shape. There is one section that has wash out from this year’s snow and needs to be cut back.

As for the west entrance off 3N16 we have had several individuals think it was ok to tear down the fence the FS put up and travel on this closed trail. We have made ever attempt to reinforce this fence so no one can enter the trail and possibly get it closed permanently.

The reason its not open is because the ADVENTURE PASS obviously doesn't go towards keeping trails open or maintained. It goes towards keeping the bathrooms clean at the staging area and for the "Patrolling" of popular area's where they can generate more adventure pass money. :shaking:

And for the record its coming up on 3-years closed.

I personally walked the trail to see why its closed myself and short of some burnt trees on the sides (aka: widow makers) It was ready for wheelin. Drop those trees and put them to the side like they did with the other trails. Haul them out later.

Agreed 100% Tony! The adventure pass is purely a joke. The revenues are not used for what they claim them to be used for.

Big Bear bud with the AAT program recently hauled some people in there to check out how many trees need removing in hopes of reopening it this summer. Chill for awhile longer.

Was that the AAT run in July? I was also on that run. The landscape was pretty eerie.

I was just up in Big Bear this past weekend. We ran into Greg Hoffman, the AAT coordinator. He said that they were not planning to reopen the trail any time soon. At least not in 2010.

Hi Capo Valley

Below is a message from Greg on Holcomb Creek.

Bob Schaich

All OHV and Adopt-a-Trail Volunteers:

As you know, Summer is fast approaching. With Summer comes additional
people accessing the National Forest. Soon 3N14 from Fawnskin to Big Pine
Flats will be reopened to motorized vehicles.

This will provide better access for motor homes and other vehicles heading
out into this area.

Due to a high number of standing burned trees (hazards) adjacent to
Holcomb Creek Road (3N93) and Lower Larga Flat Road (2N06X) , they will
remain closed this Summer.

I will update you when more information is available.

Thank you for your patience,

Greg.
