: MAY 15th TREC RACE
Vu14TJ 05-06-2010, 08:21 AM Kyle or Larry, can we get some info for this race?
Tech time/location (same?)?
Start time?
Will the course be the same as the April race?
And anything I'm missing, thanks!
Hosejockey 05-06-2010, 07:56 PM Can we tech in Saturday at all
Vu14TJ 05-09-2010, 02:09 PM Larry, in the previous race thread you said the race will start at 7:30, is that central time?
Vu14TJ 05-10-2010, 07:57 AM TTT for race info :D
Okay, here is all the info that you were looking for.
Tech will begin at 5 p.m. in the parking lot behind the registration office. If you get here earlier, we MAY be able to tech early.
Remember, we are looking for fire extinguishers and window/door nets.
The race will start as close to 7 p.m. as possible. 7:30 p.m. at the latest. EASTERN TIME
We are going to try a different course. How different depends on the weather.
We hope to see you here, good luck!
Tom Campbell 05-10-2010, 01:08 PM window nets?
Vu14TJ 05-10-2010, 01:32 PM window nets?
x2?? Was this discussed somewhere previously? The race is Saturday and there isn't much time if any at all to get window nets in time.
Hosejockey 05-10-2010, 01:58 PM x2?? Was this discussed somewhere previously? The race is Saturday and there isn't much time if any at all to get window nets in time.
Can I assume that rigs with fukl doors and windows will not need window nets, (i.e. the stock class, for those who have removable doors.)
summit has all sorts in stock and ship same day and are only 15 bucks
Vu14TJ 05-10-2010, 02:06 PM summit has all sorts in stock and ship same day and are only 15 bucks
Thanks for the heads up, I will check it out :grinpimp:
mc93yj 05-10-2010, 04:10 PM For the rzr's even if we have doors we need nets also?
lwt002 05-10-2010, 04:29 PM Everyone,
It was discussed during the driver's meeting at the first race of the season.
For RZR's, the stock netting will work fine.
We really need all of you to do your best to to get some sort of netting in place.
Also:
2 fire extinguishers; one in the cab accessible by driver and passenger and also one mounted on or near the B pillar behind the passenger accessible by outside personnel.
Numbers - A, B and C class need the Letter of their class in front of their number for ease of identification. (eg. B529). The letter is important, but you also need a number behind it. Numerous people filled out their entry form at the first race and did not have a number.
Tech - Everyone needs to Tech. Tech starts, as Kyle said, at 5pm. I am going to be down there Friday am working on the course and some other things. If you want to Tech earlier find me and let me know, or leave word at the office.
questions? Let me know.

only one that is some what cheap and would fit a 4 door xj im thinking of just running it on its side with the extra down the inside of the door
Hosejockey 05-10-2010, 05:57 PM or i guess alot of them could be turned and run side ways
lwt002 05-10-2010, 06:33 PM Rzr guys (and everyone else), there will be absolutely no carrying extra fuel on the race vehicle during the race. If you come though tech with an extra fuel tank strapped to the machine you will be asked to remove it.
If you are found carrying an extra tank during the event for refueling, it could result in disqualification for the event.
We need to keep your safety in mind. Please understand.
The only place refueling is allowed is in the pit area.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Vu14TJ 05-11-2010, 04:52 AM Everyone,
It was discussed during the driver's meeting at the first race of the season.

Not everyone was at the first race let alone the drivers meeting Larry. For the people that want to race, but don't visit pirate, how are they supposed to find these rule changes (window nets are not listed in the rules posted on the badlands website)? Can we have some type on location where everyone should be able to look for updates/rule changes, maybe on the badlands or TREC website?
BTW, how many B class guys plan on showing up?
nobarrierz 05-11-2010, 05:18 AM I second what he said. I wasnt competing in the first race, therefore was definitely not at the drivers meeting. Perhaps the actual TREC website should be updated regularly and have the current info on it, since im sure thats where most people are going for the info. I know thats where i first went for the rules and could only find the 2009 rules. Then i was led here by a few other people for more information.
Anyway, Ill be there saturday along with a coworker in 2 class C ZJs....still working down to the last minute to get it ready!
lwt002 05-11-2010, 10:11 AM I will pass the suggestions along.
Do your best to get the nets in, but I doubt Kyle will turn anyone away for this race if you don't have nets.
No problem, we will work with everyone. You know our policy, we want everyone to have a good time. We are just trying to get everyone to be as safe as possible. I do agree we need to get an area for everyone to keep up to speed on the rules and such.
PUjeeper 05-11-2010, 10:38 AM aren't the nets just for side by sides?
Vu14TJ 05-11-2010, 10:43 AM Is the TJ gonna make it this time Jon? It looks like after the last race the XJ could use a new shock or two
lwt002 05-11-2010, 11:06 AM aren't the nets just for side by sides?
Jon,
Kyle would like them to be in all vehicles... that being said they are going to look really silly on your TJ considering you dont have a top (do you?)!
It would keep your arms from flying out the side though...
aren't the nets just for side by sides?
I thought the same thing and was at the drivers meeting, Oh well. Will do the best to get one in before Sat!
PUjeeper 05-11-2010, 03:22 PM Is the TJ gonna make it this time Jon? It looks like after the last race the XJ could use a new shock or two
New set of shocks are on the way. Also have some JB weld for the fuel tank and a new add a leaf coming. Planning on fixing it up saturday morning to race that night.
I really want to get the TJ running right but we still haven't figured it out. I would rather race it.
Jon,
Kyle would like them to be in all vehicles... that being said they are going to look really silly on your TJ considering you dont have a top (do you?)!

Actaully, the TJ already has them on both sides along with aluminum door panels. We have to have them for WEROCK/KOH.
I thought the same thing and was at the drivers meeting, Oh well. Will do the best to get one in before Sat!
I really thought at the drivers meeting he said SXS since they sit so close to the opening and it is so big.
il. prerunner 05-11-2010, 03:24 PM BTW, how many B class guys plan on showing up?[/QUOTE]
I plan on being there with my ford rager. I think larry said it would be in b class.
There has been some questions about classes. If you are a new class and are thinking of coming out to try TREC...we will open a class for you if you have more than three of the same type machine (ex 2wd race trucks). We are doing our best to make sure we will be able to accomodate the 2wd trucks this event and we are adding a stock side by side class for this event also.
Vu14TJ 05-12-2010, 09:44 AM Would the "s" model be considered the stock class?
No they are in the modified class
Just to keep everyone posted, we have had some volunteers working the course this week and it might be the best groomed course we have ever had. Looking forward toward Sat
Vu14TJ 05-13-2010, 07:36 AM What's the weather been like down there Kyle? It's been wet here for the last few days. With any luck the course will be somewhat wet to keep the dust down.
Hosejockey 05-13-2010, 10:16 AM yeah whats the mud outlook trying to decide to run tyhe all terrains or the mud terrains
Tom Campbell 05-13-2010, 06:03 PM was there a problem with a 2wd not being able to continue through an obstacle? was it an impedence for other racers?
PUjeeper 05-13-2010, 09:01 PM was there a problem with a 2wd not being able to continue through an obstacle? was it an impedence for other racers?
yea he got bogged down in one of the deep deep sandwash turns.
We had plenty of room to pass safely. When I first came up on him on the second lap there was a flagger waving a caution flag to even help alert us.
Tom Campbell 05-14-2010, 05:05 AM thanks, heard something about it.

AlumCJ 05-14-2010, 07:45 AM PAC Racing Springs #204 will be in the house.
It has rained pretty much every day but i think the the mud shouldn't be to bad but there are going to be some soft areas and im hoping the dust situation should be much better than past events. There was a problem with a 2wd truck in the pea gravel last time so we changed that spot so you turn on the harder spot.
ta2oodfreak 05-14-2010, 10:32 AM In with the 44B truck! Been working 2 jobs and long hours, hell I haven't touched the truck since I parked it after the last race. Ill be doing last min prep work tonight. See you out there.
Tom Campbell 05-14-2010, 01:46 PM our ranger p.u. needs front reciever welded in, 1 body mount replaced, and upper rear shock mounts raised - did not get window nets in(?) - we'll have those for race #3. we should be there about 3-4pm sat.

I was co-driving, I'll let Matt know you said that :laughing: We were racing each other pretty good for the first few laps, it was a good time! It was a tough course to make a pas on and be safe doing it. We knew if we could get by you in the sand we would make up some time in the woods.
We have a few things we need to tweak on the jeep for next race, other than that, were ready!!
Wow, thanks for getting the results up so quick Kyle!
lwt002 05-16-2010, 12:55 PM Just got home and logged on to see that K1 beat me to the punch posting up the results!
I'm glad everyone had a good time. I had an awesome time for about the fist 300 yards and a good time after that.
Don't forget about window nets and fire extinguishers for next time. Also, we need to round up some more B class recruits!
Thanks Jaime and Ken for working on my rig while I was printing out the checkpoint sheets and thanks to Roscoe for the gas.
Let me know if you guys have any questions - post them up here or email me.

nobarrierz 05-16-2010, 06:04 PM Had a great time! First race ive run, and i thought it was a great course. Did a lap on the last races course in my TJ and it was pretty rough compared to this one. I also loved the starting line. Proud of my 2nd place finish in C class being my first race and the rig wasnt entirely finished.
You guys got a great thing going, keep it up. You mentioned you wanted suggestions, only one I have is make sure all the people at checkpoints that are checking numbers have flashlights. 1 or 2 didnt. i think it would have made those ones a lot quicker.....especially with our reflective numbers lol.
The ZJ twins will be back in 3 weeks, cant wait!
oh...and whats payout for 2nd place???? lol
Vu14TJ 05-16-2010, 06:12 PM x2, What were the payouts for this race?
Kyle, Larry, et al,
Thanks for getting results up so quick! Larry's daughter's C++ program must have worked pretty well, huh?
The TREC races are getting better and better every time! The checkpoints are working great, the latest course layout is awesome (love the long, fast RR grade that goes to the far corner of the property), the worst of the whoops were graded, yet there were still plenty to give us one helluva' ride!
The KOH Qualifiers will be in for one heck of a ride come October. The Badlands definitely has a unique form of go-fast racing!
I only wish I could find my stomach. I think I left it somewhere between the big jump's takeoff and the landing!
cm "bruises are becoming the norm" k
umbrobryan 05-16-2010, 08:54 PM Really wish I would have put the grade 8s in, instead of the crap bolts that came with circle track brackets. Oh well, we did say we were doing this to see what fell off. I was grateful that Kyle and Larry let me run down the concrete hill to get my spring back. Ended up loosing both rear shocks completly with in two laps. It got real fun after that. Lost the spring on the first lap.
Would like to say thank you to the gentle man with the high lift that came to my rescue. He also brought a sawzall to cut the bolt holding the left on one. The last 4 laps gave me plenty of time to talk to Macgyver and for Macgyver to yell at me. Great co-pilot, saved me and the guy behind me from missing a turn on the first lap. Right Right Right. We passed it and had to make a u-turn.
Check points were great except the light thing. I would like to see a light on each front entrance cone. It cant get any easier pulling thru two lighted cones. I dont think to much time was wasted on the ones that didnt have light though. Now keep in mind i was was running 29 min laps cause i'm a tard
Other than that, ONE HELL OF A JOB Larry, Kyle, ALL VOLUNTEERS. Thank you very much for making this happen. TREC Twin 2 will be ready for the 5th in new fashion. TTYL Bryan C741

Troy was in the Dragon Fire Racing Nesssie II. It is based on the Kawasaki Terex platform. Someone in the SXS world probably knows more about Dragon Fire Racing.
ta2oodfreak 05-17-2010, 12:01 PM Awesome race! I beat the snot out of the 44B truck all race and it paid off again. Unfortunately the 44B truck is now destroyed, the popcan unibody has come apart at the seams. Good news is I have another ZJ at home so I guess its time to get working. Hopefully I can get something together for the next one.

PUjeeper 05-19-2010, 11:03 AM Finally figured out how not to finish a race. Made it a little over 3 laps before the engine/fuel system wouldn't go any further.
I liked the start since it resulted in me being up front, but I really think the flag dropping/barrell race is a little dangerous. I don't think anyone wants to come out and be forced into a situation where they have to nerf someone. Sure rubbing is racing but the dead start or the going threw the whoops on the start seem to separte people a little better. I can't imagine what it was like for the other class C's back in the mess.
I loved the track. It wasn't perfectly smooth and shouldn't be yet it wasn't something that was just torture like the first event. It was groomed nicely for what you would expect in a high speed trail race. I also like the additional course area back in orange.
Congrats to Bob Knoll on his second class C win. A good pace with a vehicle that has held up twice. I wanted to run a pace I knew nobody could keep up with to build enough of a lead to hold onto once the vehicle fell apart, unfortunatly it quit a little early just before check point 2 and just fell more apart after that. The day ended when it quit running and the frame broke in half. Thanks again to 4 Wheel Parts for their support of the 890 XJ in the TREC series. It may be time to bring the TJ back off since it looks like the XJ may be on it's way to the scrapper.

Go B class! The TJ has a MAJOR short somewhere in one of the main lines coming off the power dist center. B44 is giving me some advice on what to look for and I am going to start chasing wires... ah... soon? Tonight? I was suppose to do it last night but I decided it would be more fun to go home and get an attitude from my wife and kids...
Should have gone to the shop, at least the jeep likes me.
Vu14TJ 05-19-2010, 12:14 PM We will be adding some more lights, making new rear lowers, and maybe trying out some different rear coils. We had the nTH Degree 3" coils in and they were very very stiff. These are progressive coils and it seemed to really shoot the rear end around off of every whoop. We may try some OME 2.5" coils, any thoughts?
BTW what tire pressures is everyone running? We have been running 18lbs in the 35's.

what shocks? In my TJ we have run pro comp and rubicon express 3.5" to 4" coils and actaully found that stock chevy suburban progressive rate coils worked best due to them being a stiffer coil. The shooting feeling you describe usually comes from shocks, either blown/faded/or not valved right. While I was walking it seems like your jeep was handing the small whoops pretty well.
As far as pressure, i've run from 4.5 to 40 in various different races. The lower pressure helps with straight line traction and softens landings, but results in the sidewalls rolling over in the turns. I think pressure is really up to the driver on how they want their rig to respond. Try a few different pressure during pre-running and see what you like.
BTW way tire pressures is everyone running? We have been running 18lbs in the 35's.
Too low, IMO.
I was running 30 psi in my 31s. They worked well.
Somewhere between 18 and 30 should be good for 35s.

The shocks are Fox 2.0" Emulsions and were supposed to be valved for the Jeep. Matt is going to check when he gets home and post up what they are valved to. The jeep handled the small whoops fine, it's just when we got to the bigger stuff it wasn't soaking anything up in the rear. The front worked great though.

This was noticeable right from the start, so I would say no to the fading. Didn't even think to see if they were hot.
nobarrierz 05-19-2010, 06:12 PM im running fox 2.0 reservoirs all the way around on my zj, and i know they got pretty damn hot during the race. Felt them once when i got out to adjust lights, and when i was done with the race
PUjeeper- I know that thing sounded like it was pretty upset with you when you blew past us after being broke by that hill on the first lap. Kinda figured it was the motor that had enough when we saw ya broke again.
And as someone that was in that mess behind ya at the start, it definitely was a mess, but expected. Just really really dusty. After we got past the pits, seemed like everyone kinda fell in line. I liked it though, even though i ended up about in the middle of all of it.

PUjeeper 05-19-2010, 10:25 PM PUjeeper- I know that thing sounded like it was pretty upset with you when you blew past us after being broke by that hill on the first lap. Kinda figured it was the motor that had enough when we saw ya broke again.
I have ONE memory just literally burned into my memory. I mean I remember other things here and there, but one thing stands out in my mind that I wish I could see again. Man I wish I could have seen me going. I had no idea about the flames....kinda scary with the gas leak I found today. I pretty much had it in my head that I wanted to beat on that thing like never before and I think I did. I'm still not sure what the running issues were. I'm not the most mechanically inclinded but if something is still running I'll keep driving it....and not just nurse it....I'd drive it. It felt like I was in a demo derby that race.....run beating on it for a while then it would die. Then I'd spend 10 to 30 seconds to get it running again so I could beat on it for a few more minutes.
Good new is, tonight the TJ came back to life. I may have a nicer rig to beat on next race now.

cardboard 05-20-2010, 06:22 PM That was a great race guys. I was at check point 2 with my daughter. I noticed a couple things. #1 The race rules said "The vehicles will come to a complete stop at each check point" so we weren't slow we were just following directions. #2 once you guys finished the first lap most of the vehicles were covered in mud so numbers could not be seen whether we were lite up like daylight or had a match stick. My suggestion would be to call out your # when you are approaching the check point. We can here you loud and clear as long as you are with in about 20 feet. We will be out there in June at check point 2, already have 2 new gas lanterns sitting in the garage ready to go. This will not mean you can fly thru the CP but at least you will see us better.

C714 and C741 have reflective number decals. Only the numbers reflect so as long as you shine a flashlight at them, they should be easy to see. Got them on the doors and upper driver side corner of the windshields. I opted for those to try and help you guys out a little at night.
Thanks for the efforts you guys are putting into this! Keep your eye out, ya may see the twin zjs come flying over that hill just before your checkpoint this next race!
lwt002 05-20-2010, 08:12 PM ...twin zjs...
Where are you guys from? You guys really need to think about doing some reinforcement on the twins during the summer break. We have seen a few ZJ's literaly come apart at the seams as a result of racing TREC. B44's rig was pretty bad after the race last weekend, it won't be racing again. CMK and Roscoe can tell you ALL ABOUT ZJ's commin' apart at the seams too.
If you reinforce it in the right places it will hold together. 90% of the jeepspeed classes seem to be XJ's and they are unibody. It doesnt seem like they go though one every season.
Search the forum for jeepspeed builds and check out some of that info. Shaffers off road is a good resource too. Jeepspeed has a forum as well. If you guys are anywhere near me and need some help let me know.
Someone needs to find a wrecked diesel liberty and turn that into a TREC racer. That would be sweet. Anyone got a dealer license? I'll buy the rig if someone can get me into the auction...

lwt002 05-20-2010, 08:23 PM This would make a nice TREC racer too.

hmmmm....maybe that could be the new 44B truck.
.....good call on the reinforcing the unibody on these popcans, CMK has been preaching that since last year. i took a bunch of pics and will have them up shortly. i ripped apart all the sheet metal, spot welds and have cracks and splits going through C and D pillars and seperated the top half of the truck from the floor.

the front of the truck is still holding up well, i would recommend plating the front rail areas and maybe adding some tubing, the rear of these trucks is what really comes apart. the tailgate being off allows the body to flex more and more damage is the end result. put a cage in it, reinforce and reweld the body and seams.
big plans in the works for this zj....heres the new 44B sitting next to the retired 44B.

nobarrierz 05-21-2010, 04:23 AM We are from Fort Wayne, In. And ya, weve heard tons about roscoes and macgyvrs "prune". Its actually been re-incarnated into ours. The cage is in mine (kinda), tires are on the 741. Re-inforcement is a planned item. However, i still think they wont last very long. What are your suggestions on re-inforcement locations? Ive seen the jeepspeed rigs (online of course), pretty sweet. however, i hear they may get more than 1 season out of them, but not much more. havent really looked into how long they are lasting myself though

I thought you guys did a great job at the checkpoint. Everyone time we passed through we called out our number you gave us the ok and we were on our way. We thought the only slow CP was the start finish line. Not to knock any volunteers, because we are happy to have you there so we can race, but whoever was doing start finish needed to make their mind up. He would be searching all over the vehicle for a number even after we told him what it was  I know everyone in the trailer heard us.
macgyvr 05-21-2010, 08:09 AM Put them on a rotiseri (sp?)
lot of work, you maybe could swap parts a lot faster...
i'm wondering this, the ones that are stripped are falling apart, what about the ones leaving the doors and hatches on...are the doors and hatches helping to hold the bodys together?
the prune was done before it started due to rust...we just didn't know it...

Yes I think the doors and hatches are helping. I am not saying that I know everything, but if I were to build a cherokee, I would leave all doors on and maybe even weld the rear doors shut. I would beef up the subframe, plate the hell out of the whole thing and tie the cage into the body in a number of places. Check out all the jeepspeed pics, they are all running doors.
ta2oodfreak 05-21-2010, 10:58 AM On a unibody truck, everything is structural, doors, hatch and even the glass comes into the equasion. I ran a hatch on my truck last season until the last race and I have noticed the truck bend up more without it in place. This next ZJ will be fully caged, plated and reinforced using the one I trashed as a blueprint for reinforcement. Some guys go over the entire truck welding seams that were just pinch welded together in addition to all the other bracing. ZJ guys, check out the build shaffers offroad did.
Hosejockey 05-21-2010, 11:20 AM im debating putting my hatch back on but i welded my cage to the body any where i could including the roof on top of the tubes
PUjeeper 05-21-2010, 01:31 PM Check out all the jeepspeed pics, they are all running doors.
The rules require them to run doors. If you look at most jeepspeeds, they are closer to tube buggies than unibody rigs. Most weight 4600 lbs or heavier. The tube creates a frame that suspension and cage points are mounted too. I think the key would be plating the bottom channels and tieing everything into there to get a XJ or grand to last. Without making a frame, they just flex too much.
My XJ's problem is rust. I would have taken way to much to make it last.

Interesting point of view facing backwards. Great start too, any idea how many got off ahead of you?
lwt002 05-21-2010, 06:24 PM OK - I have been talking to a few people and it has been decided that, to promote safety, if you have a CB or one of those small two way radios bring it for the next race and carry it with you in your race vehicle. It is not manditory but requested.
The thought is that the more people that are carrying a radio increases the chance to get help quickly to someone in need. Im not too concerned about those who broke down (we find them all sooner or later) but people who may be injured.
This was probably the fastest race yet and if this trend is going to continue, we need to get the safety precautions dialed in.
Don't forget fire extinguishers are manditory for all vehicles. SXS's included. Full size rigs need one that can be reached by the driver and passenger and one that is behind the B pillar that can be accessed via outside personnel. I may go buy a few fire extinguishers to have on hand in case some people who are new dont have them or whatever. It will depend on the price. SXS's only need one which should be mounted just behind the seats on the cross bar.
By request, I am going to make some mile marker signs to post along the track as well. This will help drivers keep track of where they are and also assist in finding people in the event of a break down or emergency. I am planning on having a course marker every half mile.
I am also hoping to make some markers that will be put up a hundred yards or so in front of the check point to warn the drivers that they are approaching. I'm thinking a giant 'check mark' painted with reflective paint would be cool.
Lastly, something that is in the rule book but I totally forgot about is a basic first aid kit. Every vehicle should carry a basic first aid kit that is clearly labeled as such.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions and if you have any questions PM me or post them up here. If you need to talk to me PM me or call the office and Jenny can give you my number.
