: Wiring Questions for 4.O swap into CJ
Rob Kosinski 10-16-2002, 10:30 PM Hey guys my project CJ is almost complete.. I am about to start wiring the junk up. The motor is out my old 94 XJ. I am asking for advice on wiring help in regards to what I actually need to hook up. I am using the XJs underhood wiring harness and I will be splicing into the CJs.
I have the complete XJ underhood harness and computer all hooked and connected to the proper sensors. I am using Autometer Phantom Gauges so the gauge part should be covered. I have the factory service manual from the CJ and Haynes manual for the XJ. I was about to go the snap on guy and get the XJ wiring diagram but I figured I would ask here first. Theres a ton of writeups that were very informative but no one went into detail about wiring . I am just trying to avoid any uneccessary work. What should basically splice into on the CJ harness . I have the lights hooked up. I just need to worry about the other side of the Harness that controls the engine..
Thanks in Advance.. Rob K
combres 10-17-2002, 09:47 AM I am doing a swap on my 83 CJ with a 99 XJ engine.
I got a haynes manual, but they do not provide the bulkhead connnector diagrams if you can believe. I even called them, and they said they have never provided them, so your best bet is to go to your local jeep dealership and look in the big book, and they should photocopy the necessary diagrams.
How do you have your gauges setup?
I am not sure if my guages are digital or not and if they will hook up to the new computer?
Your right, no one seems to go indepth about wiring, but I think it may be because it differs for each year.
Any help would be appreciated.

MilspecXJ 10-17-2002, 01:16 PM Cool...sounds like your project is wrapping up! Cant wait to see it on the trail bro.
Contact Beezil...he installed the drivetrane from his XJ when he built the CJ6. He did just as your asking, eliminating what wasn't needed and utilizing the factory harness.
Hit me back channel and i'll dig out his email addy if someone here doesnt answer your concerns before hand.
Oh...and...
:flipoff2: ;)

thenodnarb 10-19-2002, 11:37 AM your gonna have to provide some more info. do you still know what you have to hook up or is it just a bunch of connectors that you dont know where they go? im doing the same thing in a YJ.
Rob Kosinski 10-19-2002, 01:28 PM All the sensors are hooked up to the harness that was out of the XJ. My main question is how to provide power to the XJ harness and what stuff can I eliminate from the XJ harness becuase there is a ton of stuff that should not be needed. I am gonna use autometer gauges so that solves a huge headache under the dash. I just need to get the pig to fire up and for the computer to be fully functional. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks RK

JEEPRZ 10-19-2002, 06:59 PM I kept my engine harness totally separate from the CJ harness. Only connects in 1 spot for ign, plus the batt + and - . I used the red wire/ white stripe for this

Rokmycj 10-20-2002, 07:07 AM To actually make the motor run you should only have to hook up about three wires. one will be the switched + to excite the system. the other will be a signal to the starter, and I'm not sure if there is a constant or not. If you have the power distribution block that goes to the 4.0 then you are 99% there. Like stated before the motor harness and the car harnes are seperate. you just need to provide power to the car from the motor harness and the necessary wires from the car to tell the motor to run. You will have a ton of accessories on the distribution block that don't do anything, because there are accessories on the newer cars that the older ones wired differently. Like headlights. Good luck, it's not as hard as it seems.

CRAZY MATT 10-20-2002, 08:43 PM Will the computer work on a 258 and with a few mods? Is the computer in the engine compartment?
I just build a standalone setup from turbo minivan SMEC for my dodge omni- just need custom computer and serious R&D to get it how I want it
Sundowner 10-21-2002, 05:07 AM here:
this is the basic operating schematic for the 4.0L

I didn't post it as a pic because it's huge.
thenodnarb 10-21-2002, 02:43 PM the computer gets power thru one wire which, off the top of my head, is the voltage regulator signal from the alternator *I believe*. your enigne may be different but I would guess its pretty similar.
you really need the big manual from chrysler for the engine your swapping. its great. it tells you what sensors the computer uses to run, shift, idle and what not. it tells you what inputs control which outputs not to mention the complete wire schematics and bulk head connector diagrams and their locations. you really need it for this swap. or just get the power distribution center and plug everything in. you'll still have to wire in the park/neutral saftey switch and maybe do something with the sutomatic shutdown relay(maybe not) but it would be 100 X easier. I just bought a few relays rather than the 200 bucks the salvage yards wanted for the PDC. but mine wont be as clean.
