: NP241/NP231...any parts interchangable???

So here's the story: My lead tech was replacing a flex plate on an 89 K2500 Chevy. He pulled the tranny/transfer case back and rest it on the torsion bar x-member. Long story short, the assembly slipped off of the tranny jack and fell 5 feet to the concrete floor. It hit on the bell housing, then fell over onto the top of the transfer case. Broke the top of the t-case housing, no harm to the tranny. We got a replacement from a wrecking yard with customer approval. Anyway, the old one could probably be fixed if someone could weld up the cast aluminum. It has a 32 spline input shaft because it was behind a TH-400, if it was behind a 700R4, it would have a 27(?) spline. It's mine for the taking.

Anyway, my question is, are there any parts inside a NP/NVG241 that I can upgrade my 231? IIRC, the chain is wider, and stronger, but is it possible to swap it into a 231? Maybe some of the other parts?

Another option would be to build a doubler case for this. Use the 231 in front and the 241 in the rear. Kinda like RyeGuy did.

Any help or suggestion (ie: talk to so-and-so) would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Willis

Yes, I searched. Didn't find the info I wanted.

I believe...

That the 6 gear(?) planetaries will fit in the NP231 replacing the 3 gear(?) ones. You will have to fabricate an adapter bearing for the output shaft is the catch. But, its been done.

I think the chain, etc. can transfer over as well.

Some parts will transfer directly.

The planetary, the front seal cover, and the pump.

The chain and chain gears will not. They are larger on the 241 than the 231 and the 231 case does not have enough room inside to fit, also the bearing configuration is different so the front output shaft won't fit.

Hey, I need a 32 spline input shaft. Are you interested in selling it? I can provide you with a 27 or 21 spline if you need one?

You're first in line if I part out the case or remove that part. I may still do a doubler case, and since it's in an XJ, I'll have room to do so. If I do, I'd stick the 241 behind the 231 for obvious strength reasons.

Thanks

Thanks. I have an ad in the "wanted" section right now for that part.
