I thought you were going 4.3? Could always use a marine 4" diameter flame arrestor air cleaner...

Why not use the big flat 2F-era air cleaner?

Will it bolt up?

Else, time to go junkyarding for a new air cleaner.

..That was is what I was thinking!...But isn't that air cleaner hard to find?...If anyone knows if that will work on a 72 Cruiser with stock engine and carb..Let me know!

I have an extra one in my garage I'd box up and send you for $40, but make sure it fits first. Can you borrow one from a friend for a test-fit? Should take 30 minutes to swap it temporarily.

Seems like the problem would be lack of bolt holes for attachment of the air cleaner on the side of the head and on the valve cover.

Another thought is to figure out a different spot to put the can of your early air cleaner, cut off the flat tube that comes off the lid, find an air cleaner cap ("plenum"?) at a junkyard that fits your carb and then run flexible hose from the lid of the air cleaner to the new cap.

the 2f air cleaner wont work unless the carb has the bolts coming out the top to bolt it on. I tried but mine was interference from teh wardens booster adapter and booster.

Email me @ cponline@pacbell.net
Ill tell you what I did :D

If you have a 2bbl carb and 2 bolt holes/bosses in the head (side)above the distributor, and a 2F valve cover it WILL work. I may have a 2F valve cover, and I know I have a clean 2f aircleaner assembly, but you will have to plug some ports on them and use aa hose clamp on the carb mouth.

I'd go to a junk Junk Yard.

The best setups I've seen are a Mitsubishi box and Volvo 240 air box both of which are very similar (long rectangular box with filter about 6" wide). These are also both very water proof, have a system to integrate a heated air source (taking warm air from your exhaust first) on cold mornings, and can be rigged easily into a snorkel.

A 2F will work with the right carb and later valve cover. Too much hassle for what I'd consider an OK air cleaner.

Good luck,

use the triangular washable one from edelbrock! i believe it was less than 20 bucks and it is one of a few that come for two barrels...cheap and

I know on the early two barrel carbs the air cleaner clamps around the top. but on the later ones it clampes throught the top like a holley or quad.
the valve cover should have no problem and you will have to move the coil (I think). but at the carb end Im not sure. Your carb needs to have a threaded rod coming out the top. not sure if this is a removable piece that can be moved from carb to carb or not.

I forgot to mention, when I got my '63 FJ40 (with a '67 F) it had one of those little chrome aftermarket air cleaners clamped to the top of the carb. I'm sure it would have let all kinds of crap into the engine, but for the road driving it was doing I bet it was fine.

There's got to be a better filtering air cleaner that clamps to the top of the carb and clears the hood.

Len, start on that 55 yet? :)

not yet. Still finishing up a few things on the house. hope to get started next week. but ripping it apart and cutting it up :D

On the air cleaner subject Call Marv @ Specter or better yet go down there. I had the same problem on mine and we made a trip down there and I hit him up. I just so happens that he had a air cleaner off a japanese fj55 firetruck that fits the bill perfect. It goes over the top like a 2f cleaner but bolts on the top studs on the valve cover, and has the clamp like the earlier air cleaner. It also flows a little more air and mounts up high and has the cool little tech symbol on it.

I don't have any of the Mitsu or Volvo box I mentioned but here's a different Mitsubishi setup from a '89 Montero also off Morgan's site. Looks a like a cylandrical (sp?) air cleaner with good volume.
http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/tech/snorkel/royal.html

He chose this one specifically for his snorkel setup also so I imagine it's pretty waterproof also. I'm not sure where the 90 degree piece that attaches to the top of the carb came from (except that it's now on my former HJ60) but if you can find one it's worth it's weight in gold. Then you have many more options for different airboxes. Like I said that Volvo one is pretty sweet. Should you use a snorkel it seals up nicely as it's only compromising water source is the heated air intake. But if you seal that off your golden. Probably about the same size as an early F air cleaner but with that flex hose you can move it around quite a bit.

Good luck!
