: happy b-day to me.
sceep 05-13-2010, 02:15 PM been searching for a DS to commute on and ride with my pop's on weekends/afternoons.
We were actually checking this thing out a few weeks ago when pop's picked up a desert tank from the him. it popped up on craigs again today about $1k less than he originally was asking for it so i jumped on it.
specs so far:
2002 Honda XR650L
6,144 miles
new sprockets and chain.
Oversize foot pegs.
Lowering link.
Rear luggage rack.
exhaust opened up.
I'm fuggin excited!!
:bounce:
ky scrambled 05-13-2010, 02:20 PM I hate you. The pegs were/are the best thing I put on my XR.
Dog House 05-13-2010, 02:40 PM Pics???? Congrats!! There are few things in life better than gettin a bike!!! :D
Kyron 05-13-2010, 03:56 PM Right on!! I love those bikes :D

Get taller bars too, it made a huge diffrence on mine

Show me!!! I have an extra set of stock pegs for my DRZ that I thought about hacking up to make some wider ones.
Sceep, if you want a neat project look at the guys who swap on CBR F2/F3 wheels and street tires for a home grown supermoto. If you want a set I just happen to have a black set with polished lips, I will cut you a hell of a deal on them.
Davethorik 05-13-2010, 06:05 PM I dont know about the XR/L, but I've sat on a KLR with lowering links, and I don't think I would want to ride that thing on or off road. Of course, I guess you could take the fork tubes down in the triples some to accomodate them. How tall are you?
edit; saw in the KLX thread that you're 6' tall. I'd ditch the lowering link and try to find a stocker or a raising link. You will enjoy it much more.

The XRL is much more dirt oriented than the KLR. XRL's are TALL, I am 5'10 and tippy toeing at a stop light is what has to happen.

Ever ridden a KLR? They are tall too. With the raising links, I can just barely flatfoot mine at a light, stock it was much easier. I am 6'4".
It was just a suggestion, anyway.
edit, according to the internets, the xr's seat height is 2 inches more than the klr (37 vs 35 inches). Of course, when you are over 200 lbs, those numbers go out hte window pretty fast (as soon as you sit on it). I only suggested changing the links because to me, the links were cheaper than a $$ rear shock. With them, the bike is nowhere near perfect (if that is possible for a KLR), but I can use the stock rebound and damping settings, and they work. Stock, I'd pretty much bottom the rear shock out, and all the settings felt the same. I guess I assumed that oe rear shocks are all mediocre.
anyway...congrats on the bike. I think dual sports are the perfect bikes for 90% of everyone's needs, and fun fun fun.

No KLR's for me, I am a cheap fucker but the KLR riders make me look like one of those rappers throwing money into crowds of people.:laughing:

Having been a member of a couple KLR boards since I bought mine, I totally understand this. Since it's the only vehicle I've ever bought new, I take better care of it than myself. I am not opposed to low priced, functional mods, but there isn't a milk crate bungeed onto the back of mine either...
hijack off.

will look into it.

very interested as i'll be commuting roughly 50miles a day on it!!

not a chance in hell. my dad rides a '03 xr that had the stock link on it. i couldnt even tippy-toe the thing. it was much nicer when he lowered it. I;m excited that its one less part i have to buy.
Dog House 05-14-2010, 08:32 AM Hey Sceep, that's a great lookin' bike!! Again Congrats man oh and happy birthday too!! :smokin:
LOPPY 05-14-2010, 09:48 AM Great bike man... and at 6k, still fresh for an XR. Just keep the oil clean and that bitch will run forever. NICE SCORE.
Sturgell 05-14-2010, 06:14 PM Great bike man... and at 6k, still fresh for an XR. Just keep the oil clean and that bitch will run forever and keep it in the powerband far far away from the rev limit. NICE SCORE.
Thumpers are simple to achieve decent engine longevity with.
Sceep, I am not exactly sure what you have to do to make them fit your bike but I had a pdf downloaded to adapt them to my DRZ. You would probably have to mill down the cush drive side of the wheel but the axle size is the same, I am pretty sure the front will bolt right up.

fuggy 05-16-2010, 07:58 PM Nice bike! Hope you have a good time on the new birthday bike.
#rawkon 05-16-2010, 08:36 PM I have a 2007. I love it. Drop dead relaibility and its a monster off the pavement.
That is a lot better gift than I gave myself this weekend. I did new rear tire, chain and sprockets (with a few tools). I am going to order a kickstand (crf450r) and a EVS balistic jersey to finish off the gift giving. Now if I could find a IMS tank on the side of the road I would be set.
Congrats on the purchase. Ride "safe" and have fun out there.
sceep 06-17-2010, 01:54 PM few updates today.
couldnt stand the floppy ass front fender so swapped an acrebis one on, clarke 3.5 tank, daves mods to the carb, re-jet, new plug, uni-filter, removed airbox snorkle.
gonna need tires next week, probably re-gear a little at the same time.

I have the same front fender on my SM, with 18/21 wheels you will get coated with mud/water on rainy drizzly days. Which is probably never in NM.:homer:

Cheapj7 06-28-2010, 07:58 PM For off road and long trips a set of renthal CR High Bend Bars made a world of difference...
Keep the arms and hands nice and comfy on long slab sections and make standing up while offroad feel a lot more natural... Probably the best mod aside from uncorking I've done on my L...
you can get the 7/8 single walls for dirt cheap, they fit in the stock clamps with no mods and are plenty strong for a DS application.

I also HATED the floppy front fender, so I took the 4" grinder to mine... :flipoff2:

Kyron 07-27-2010, 11:26 AM Nice trailer ...... how much you think it weights?
not to jinix, but no spare tire?

it weights too damn much with that box on there! lol. i dunno... 350-450ish.
ran outtah time to get a spare mounted. it has space for it under the deck in the rear.
for this trip we'll just have to hope we only get one flat. towing it with the exploder so same bolt pattern/tire size.
