: Celica power steering
I have a question that was not aswered in any power steering searches. I am in the middle of installing a celica power steering set-up in my 88 Zuk. On the Samurai steering wheel shaft, there is a coupling with a rubber joint. One side goes on the steering wheel shaft and the other on the output shaft of the steering box. This shaft will not fit on my Celica box. I was told it would fit but I broke it trying to put it on. Am I supposed to have a toyota part here? Where can I get one if so? I have been slowly installing this thing and I have not gotten to drive the Zuk in 6 weeks. All help appreciated JCC :usa:

not exactly sure what you mean or what you broke:confused:
all i did was :
-uncouple and remove the stock Samurai steering box (including the rubber rag joint) from the lower steering shaft.
-bolt new bracket onto frame
-bolt Celica steering box to new bracket
-bolt Samurai lower steering shaft to steering box output shaft using the rubber rag joint that was still on the Celica box.
Tusker 10-17-2002, 04:20 PM You should get rid of the rubber rag joint. You can scrounge a steering u-joint from one of the first rack-and-pinion Celica's. It fits the Celica box on one end and has the Sami spline on the other. You will need to cut the end off of your stock steering shaft and do a little welding. I forgot the details, but I beleive that AZ has a write up on his page at http://www/azrockcrawler.com If that doesn't work, you can e-mail me. I think I still have the write-up on that in my machine somewhere.
poppycock 10-17-2002, 04:52 PM the earlier toyota supras also have a good ujoint donor.

Sarcastro 10-17-2002, 07:26 PM ok can someone give me a honest and scientific reason why to do a toyoda box and pump swap over a sidkicker ?

It would be better to use the Toy box and Saginaw pump, the Toy pump struggles with 33's in rocky terrain. better still would be an IFS truck pump and box, they seem to do fine even with 39's.
Randy 10-17-2002, 09:54 PM I have a slittly different twist. I am working on a sammy with a 1.6L and want to mount a toy IFS steering gear. Will the power steering pump and lines off a sidekick or tracker work with the toy steering gear? If so it seems it would make my life easyer to put the suzuki pump and brakets on the 1.6L then fabing up custom mounts for a toy pump.

I wondered this myself. I know the Saginaw pump I use puts out 1100 psi stock. I haven't found a site that lists the pressure the kick pump puts out. When I install my 1.6 I'll be in the same boat you are, use the kick pump or try to mount another Saginaw? I believe Petroworks can supply a ribbed pulley if you want to convert to a different pump.
FLEXYSAMMY 10-18-2002, 06:37 AM Go rite for the Saginaw steering! Box out of a YJ and pump ot of a CJ!!!!!!!!!! Best way to go one finger steering with 35's locked F & R and 5 PSI on the rocks!!!! Fawk Yeah Bitch!!!! :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
scwafish 10-18-2002, 07:54 AM I'm running a kick pump and a celica box and it has plenty of power, but I need to add a cooler, it pukes on long rungs on slab, it wouldnt be happy in a place like Moab. In boulders and dirt it works fine.
scwafish 10-18-2002, 08:05 AM BTW...I went through ps hell (many pump, box, cooler combos) when I had a heavy ass IH on 36x14.5s and the by far the BIGGEST improvement I ever made was getting the lever ratios right between my pitman arm and the steering arms. If these raios are wrong, the psi of your pump etc is MEANINGLESS compared to the power of mechanical advantage (or the lack).

That's a good point.

Sooo true....
I ran my last trip running 35s/front LR, with stock zuke manual steering !
5" pitman arm to 7" high angle arm, stock box had just enough travel for it to work ok....
AND this was all with a 2" smaller aftermarket dished steering wheel...
IMHO, having the wheel closer that the flat ass stock wheel helped my back alot...
Leverage is your friend !

Somebody draw me a picture.......
lever arms?
scwafish 10-19-2002, 06:45 AM The shorter your pitman (relative to the length of the steering arms) the more power you will have, but you will turn the wheels less. The longer your pitman arm the less power you will have, but you will turn the wheels more. Now find the balance young Jedi and you will be one with the force!

Dont know about the celica pmp but the 2wd IFS toy boxs put out around 1100# also the 4x4 is around 950# and bumping the psi up is not that hard

hmmmm so I swapping a dropped arm would cause me to have less force? or as long as it is the same length eye to eye is the key?
