Can someone verify for me the gearing options for an FJ80 front axle? I just bought one for my SAS and need to have it re-geared to 4.56. It does have the electric locker if that makes a difference.
From what I've been able to find searching, it's a standard 8" R&P with reverse cut teeth. Ratios are 4.10, 4.88 & 5.29, but I also found on Precision Gear's website a "reverse front" 4.56 ratio, which I assume means reverse cut for the front diff.
Can I also run standard cut 8" gears in the high pinion? And should I? I know reverse cut are going to be stronger for forward motion, but I kinda think that the hardest thing on a front R&P is going to be when I'm nose down on a hill and trying to back up. In this case, standard cut gears would be stronger than the reverse cut.
Thanks for the help

Dan,
Sorry I can't help with the reverse cut question (maybe get in touch with Christo at www.sleeoffroad.com - he knows the 80 better than I know the inside of my nose :flipoff2: ).
Where'd you find the axle with factory locker?

OK, just to answer myself before getting blasted for being a newbie, I've spent a few more hours searching and I see now that you can't use standard cut gears in the high pinion. What I saw was that the carriers can swap, but not the gears. I see now that standard cut gears in a high pinion won't work cause the teeth won't mesh together.

Thanks for the link. That looks like a pretty smokin' price. Is it? I was expecting it to be in the $250 - $300 range.
thanks

Dan,
One other thing to keep in mind: The FJ80 front third members can swap carriers/lockers with the 8" V6s, not the 4-cylinders. In other words, a Detroit Locker for a Toyota 8" V6 truck will work, as will an ARB RD23...Hope this helps.

Found it at a yard in Chicago using car-parts.com. I've been checking it pretty much daily for the last few weeks and this one popped up. Cheapest prices I've seen w/ locker were in the $1200 & up range. I got this one for $650 delivered to Phoenix. I haven't seen it, but I did have the guy look at it and verify it wasn't missing the locker actuator, calipers, rotors, etc. It's out of a '97 with 65,000 miles on it.
There's another one listed there in Canada for $666 US. I haven't called though to verify what it is.

Another thing though, that TPI garage sale page has been up for a real long time. That 2H block has been there since the beginning of this year so you might want to check on the prices. I'd also definetely bark up the V6 mini route (though I didn't know there were V6 minis with solid front axles (or is it a rear axle reverse cut?)) - chances are there are some deals out there in Four Wheelers if that's the case. Also, in anyone needs cheap(er than normal) lockers I have a buddy who's an ARB dealer, email bfautah@hotmail.com and tell him Andre sent you...
