patooyee 10-17-2002, 05:55 PM Are we talking about roller fairleads for winches? Why in the world would you ask a machinist to make those for you?

I assume, like posted above, an aluminum hawse fairlead for use with the synthetic winch rope.

OK ... I still don't see why one would get one made by a machine shop when, I assume, you can buy one pretty cheap from Warn or someone. Am I missing something?

The aluminum is less abrasive on the synthetic rope. The Warn fairlead is steel.

The Warn has a rough textured finish on the rope guides. Get a smoothie and your rope will love ya! Besides, I need some more bling-bling...............
rugburn 10-18-2002, 07:23 AM We could machine them from Nylatrol or Delrin and they would be even smoother and easier on the synthetic winch rope.
Let me know.....;)
Jason M 10-18-2002, 07:31 AM I was wondering when someone would think of a good plastic for a fairlead
Figures you did

Let's get busy, what else do we have to do all fall/winter? I'll dig up a stock warn or buy a kewlie aluminum one for the first prototype. Heat and friction, start the research which is better.
BTW, poly does break/crack. Maybe it's only rated at 83 mph at 42 deg.........................I'll be making new fronts in a few weeks and adding attachment points.

What are the toughts of using all pro's hawse with steel cable. After destroying my roller fairlead at ERoCC this year, I want to go with a hawse. Wondering if the aluminnum one would be easier on the cable. I know it would wear, but for $40... I could replace it once a year if necessary.
rugburn 10-18-2002, 07:55 AM you know my number...........................:p

I think aluminum hawse fairlead would be a bad choice for steel cable as aluminum is much softer than steel and with a load applied to the steel cable which results in a load normal to the hawse surface the cable would cut into it quickly.
So what's wrong with using a roller fairlead with synthetic? Is it that the rope may get between the vertical and horizontal rollers at thier intersection?
SpaceGhost 10-18-2002, 08:09 AM Yes it gets cut between the rollers, I know you can sub in bolts for the lame idler shaft/clips. Also the roller protrudes and if you catch either rope or cable between it and a rock face it's gonna be scarred, and wire WILL break!
Not to mention the kewlie factor..................
Scott@Rockstomper 10-18-2002, 08:36 AM Don't use aluminum fairleads with steel cable.
Steel fairleads (cast iron?) are only about $30 for the Warn one; not sure on Ramsey or others. Cheaper than the aluminum.
Rollers work with synthetic (I used one for probably a year-plus) but the rollers have to be intact and in good shape. If the rollers are damaged, or the roller frame is tweeked, you'll have lotsa trouble. That's why I swapped to aluminum--a new roller is $100, a new aluminum fairlead is quite a bit less.
SpaceGhost 10-18-2002, 08:42 AM Scott, do you have the aluminum ones for sale?
Not to change the topic but I have a new Warn roller fair lead that has only been mounted on my trailer winch that I would like to trade for a new aluminum one if anyone is interested.
Scott@Rockstomper 10-18-2002, 09:10 AM We've got the Spidertrax ones in-stock right now; there's a pic and more info on the rope page at
http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/recovery/ropes.htm
I subbed in bolts as a quasi-fix when I bent mine the first time (bent it back into shape and bolted it instead of the pins) but good grief, those 5/8x9.5 grade 5 bolts cost me nearly as much as an aluminum fairlead would've. Once I bent it worse I yanked it. Yes, I'm as bad as the next guy about a cheap fix on my own truck--gotta keep prices down.

randii 10-18-2002, 12:36 PM I'm still running my roller fairlead with my winch rope, but I have been eyeballing the snazzy aluminum hawse fairleads...
All Pro seems to have the best price ( http://www.allprooffroad.com/winches.html ) with $39 for an unpainted hawse and $49 for the painted one.

Not really sure which one has more Bling, tho. :p
Randii
can we say jigsaw better yet bandsaw and a router...its easy to work with aluminum go buy a small chunk and away you go custom made to your specific needs...
Aggro 10-18-2002, 02:34 PM I have these made locally. I have been selling them for a few weeks, but my ad apparently disappeared :( $40 is what I get I think a few people saw my design (no names mentioned) and are now having them made also. anyway :
