: Welding front axle question.

Being the cheap bastard that I am, I was thinking about welding my front D30. I've got a detroit in the rear as of now. I know since it will have no way of slipping that it will affect my steering while it's engaged but will it have any other adverse effects? I figured of course it would increase strain on U-joints, driveline, and maybe steering components, but aside from that?

i used to have mine welded. I had the vaccume disco so i didnt notice it unless i had it in 4 wheel drive.

My d30 is welded. No big issues, outside of what you are expecting. It does cause the drive line to spin even in 2wd...@ 40+ mph on the street my xfer case squils like a bitch.

Mines welded with disco and when I engauge it I can't steer for shit. As was stated above this is kind of a disco axle mod unless you have hydro steer, even then I doubt the D30 yoke/knuckle would be very happy.

What size tires are you running, cuz welding the front is going to put alot of stress on that small D30, i have a friend with a cherokee that ran 36's fine but he left it open, and he still did lower 2 at tellico...i dont recommend locking the 30, IMO.

I'm runnin 33x12.50's right now. It sounds like I may wanna leave it alone if I'm going to have streetability problems. It sees as much on road as off so I better play it safe. Thanks for the input guys. :)
