I am helping a friend change the clutch slave cylinder in his wifes YJ. how hard is this? and is there a write up about doing this anywhere? Thanks for all of the help.

Depending on the year YJ and slave cylinder type it can be hard or easy. The newer versions are external and you can just unbolt it and remove it. Then you attach the new one and bleed it like brakes. Mopar makes a master/slave cylinder kit that is all one piece. Took me about 30 minutes total.
The older ones are internal and require you to split the bellhousing to access it from what I understand. That is the extent of my knowledge on that one. Sorry!

Rob is right. And if you have the internal one, it's worth it to convert to the external while you are in there because it is a PITA to work on the internal one!

It's a 92. Where can I get a kit to convert it to a external? I think that they have allready bought the parts to replace it how it is now. can I use the same slave cylinder?

Thanks,

I have a wheelin friend who is a mechanic and he told me when i blew the slave that if you don't replace the master at the same time you will run into problems. he said that he has seen this many times and now he refuses to change just one becuase they keep comming back. the slave blows then the master blows then the slave blow... you get the idea

If it's a 92 it should have the external on an AX-15 (if it's got the 4.0 six anyhow). I'm not sure about the AX-5 in a 4-banger YJ.

The internals came on the Peugeots from '87 to 90.

The newer model YJ's have an external slave cylinder. Mine is a 95 and has one. If you do the swap you will need a external SC bellhousing with fork for whatever motor you have. Get the slave cylinder/master cylinder combo from the dealer. Mine cost me about $100 and is almost entirely plastic.
The swap should be fairly straight forward.

I just don't see that. I blew a master and rebuilt it. The slave has been fine for several years after that. Unless it blew so bad it contaminated the system I don't think this is a serious issue.

You seem to have to be careful what kind of fluid you use too. I can't remember the name of the company that makes the slave, but I think it starts with a G and their fluid works. Castrol fluid seems to work fine too.

That slave manufacturer is probably Girling.

Jeep recomends DOT4 fluid for the clutch- don't know why. Castrol has worked for me in the past but not with the current set up.

AX-15's had internal slaves till 93-94, at least in XJ's- ask me how I know

I'm planning to do the swap to external real soon. In the tread I started recently you can find my tale of woe

That's it, Girling. Best results for us has been to use THAT fluid.

Cool thanks guys. So after we drop the tranny the clutch slave will be attached to the bell housing? or do we have to split the case? How long do you think this will take with hand tools? I get started tomorow morning... wish me luck.

If you have the internal slave, the throwout bearing and the slave are 1 assembly, and will be on a crosspiece inside the bellhousing.

Externals are pretty easy to spot, it's a long cylinder hanging out of the bellhousing on the driver's side.

An internal slave is simple to change, but not that easy. You need to pull the tranny back from the engine. Pull tranny and t-case shifters, remove bolts from engine, pull starter. After you pull the tranny dico the hydrolic hose and slide off the slave/bearing unit. Slide new unit on, reassemble and blead. That is all there is to it. Like I said simple, but a PITA. It took me a weekend with and hand tools and I recomend renting a tranny jack. To switch to an external unit get the bh and internals (pivot arm spring, ect.) from a 94-95 YJ. Get a slave and MC from a newer Jeep too. AX-15's went to an external slave in '94.
