Looking for a shop that knows how to set up and weld the spring perches and shock mounts for axle swaps in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Thanks,

If you are a "do-it-yourselfer" You can buy all the equipment you need for less than you can pay some one else to put em on.

know anybody that does? shit if you get the right axle it'll bolt right in....problem solved. what axle is coming out and what is going back in? at most all you'll need to weld is spring pads and shock mounts (about 15 minutes worth of welding.

Yep, that's all I gotta do, spring pads and shock mounts. (1 ton axle going in 3/4 tom Burb). I can handle the set up / layout, just don't trust my neighbor or old highschool buddy with their Sears welder. This is the sorta thing you wouldn't want coming lose on you;)

just a guess but, are you taking a 9.5 inch 14 bolt out and putting a 10.5 in? that's the only reason I could see for taking out a 3/4 ton axle and putting one in out of a 1ton. the only diff in the 10.5 3/4 and 1tons are the breaks and the way the u-bolts mount. I'm assuming that a weaker axle is being replaced for a stronger one and you aren't jsut doing it for the brakes. Anyways....sears makes a decent welder ( I think it's made by soemone else) and can burn good welds if properly manned. anyways....I guess I don't really have anything to offer as far as a shop goes so I'll stop.

No, I appreciate the advise. Like you said, it doesn't matter how good the welder is, it's the guy using it. I may ask around and see if anyone I know is competent with a welder. But you know how it goes. Some guy buys a welder, reads the manual once and now he thinks he ready to retrofit the Golden Gate Bridge.

There's a guy in Richmond who does this stuff on the side. It sounds like he knows what he's doing ... I asked enough questions and he knew all the answers, so I might go with him.

Any advise is helpful.

I knew I should've take that welding class in high school ....

Dude, its welding, not rocket science! Im 18 and just bought my "sears welder" last month and have already done bigger jobs than that. Heck I just welded 71broncoduds shock mounts and hoops on last week. Came out good too if I do say so myself. Besides when your done you feel good that you did it yourself. And at my age and going to collage I/we don’t have much choice but to do it yourself. Hell my science book cost more than the welder!

If its just leaf spring pad its easy. Even a crappy weld would probably be strong enough. The weak point is usually the u bolts/nuts. They will stretch just enough to let axle spin. I have seen it happen 3 times. 2 times was cause some idiot had a big block with 44s or 40s and was running a 6" lift block in the back. The 3rd time was a mildly built 350 on only 33s but the guy was using some old rusted ass u-bolts/nuts. He spun the axle so often ir actually rounded the end of the spring pad. If you are worried about getting the spring pads off that easy also. Confer sells em for $40 bucks or so.

If I were you I would set it all up, have your local drunk tack weld it, then slowly/carefully drive it to what ever muffler shop or weld shop you have near you. Shit if you got AAA you could even tow there for free. $40 for spring pads + $60 or so for welding give you a worst case scenario of $100.

Ryan,

I was just thinking about that today. I remembered your truck and all the custom metal work you did on it. I'm a little ways off, but I'm gonna need perches and shock mounts set up on that 14 bolt you sold me a while back. It's finally going in my Suburban with a D60 front. I'll drop you an e-mail when I get a little closer and see what we can work out.

Thanks, I appreciate it.
