Looking to add a hydro assist ram with my 3.4 ps pump. Will the stock pump handle a 1.5 ram without lag? Does the psc pulley they sell overdrive the pump and will that help? Thanks...

It will lag. Not enough pressure or flow to make it work like it should.

Not to mention, if you were to throw a smaller pulley on, it would not increase flow. It would bring the pressure up more off idle, but overall pressure wouldn't increase because of a internal safety valve.

Some members have drilled out the older pumps that came in the 22re's for mroe flow. You can't do this withthe newer pumps, it just won't take it.

Ok, talked to a local custom power steering shop that said it would work great but I figured was too good to be true... Is the only option the psc pump?

There's also Howe and KRC. KRC has adjustable flow but still doesn't put out as much as the PSC.

I ended up going with PSC because I was getting all the parts through them already. Not to mention the price is good. I did however take KRC's idea of hard mounting a resivoir by using a AN10 45 degree fitting.

I haven't had time to make a bracket to support it, but the plan is to make a bracket that ties in with the motor. For now I have a piece of safety wire.

To make it work:

6" Resivoir with offset bottom feed
XRP AN-10 45* swivel fitting found here: http://www.lpiracing.com/XRP-45-Degree-Female-Coupler-c1008.htm
1 step smaller than an alternator belt from auto parts store, PN 4K410

You can also get the lines from Surplus Center for much cheaper than PSC.

For those who are running this set up how does it feel at speeds? Im running a 60, w 42s and want to keep it street/highway capable. Im thinking of sticking with the 1.5 ram for less lag and more steering feel. How do your trucks drive with hydro assist ant the psc pump?

Mine feels/drives fine. It's a helluva lot better with the PSC stuff then it was when I was running all the Howe shit. With the Howe TC pump, reservoir, & 1.5" ram there was some serious lag at low rpm's and was a bitch trying to park in a lot, with the PSC set up I have no noticeable lag and have a lot better feel in the steering wheel.

The Howe made my steering feedback super sensitive while driving down the road, yet would lag like hell when you needed it to be sensitive......plus the guy I was working with from Howe at the time was a stupid arrogant fucking cockface asshole........

In my experience, HA doesn't change driving on the highway much at all. There is very little steering resistance and the power steering isn't doing anything whether its stock or HA.

Its the slower stuff where it changes things. Return to center is slowed way down or non existant (easy to get used to), and if your pump is too slow then parking and things like that when the rpms are low (and crawling off road) kind of suck.

I'm running the PSC pump and it works great. I ran a modified stock 22re pump on the last rig and it worked but was slow at low rpms. I haven't heard real great things about the stock 3.4 pumps, do I didn't even bother with it.

I DD mine with 35's and it's great. Can't even notice anything on the highway, but on the streets it barely returns to center (not a big deal) and if you want to turn quick, it does lag a bit. It's not a issue at all though, and I've only had it lag on me once...

Funny you say that about Howe. My steering box is leaking and they wanted 400 bones to rebuild it, that's not including the shipping both ways.

Why on earth would I spend that kind of money on my box, when I can go to PSC, get a new one that's been ported/tapped and rebuilt for 100 bucks cheaper, while I have my box as a spare???

I've got the PSC stuff on mine with tons and 40's at almost 6,000 lbs. I enjoy driving it to the trails, on the trails, anywhere around town or out on the interstate. It steers great with no lag and returns to center just like it should. Minus some of PSC's shipping snaffu's, they provide a great product and customer service.

Are the psc boxes set up different than a stock box that has been tapped? Thank you for all of the input. I think i will go psc pump/pulley, resi, ram and tap my existing box....expensive but cant skimp on steering

so far so good on my stock power steering pump and a NON TRAILGEAR RAM..even with the arb locked on its decent enough to work offroad to my satisfaction(my scrub radius isnt fucked up with spacers/2'' back spacing, etc)

Booger Weldz, how does it work on the street? lag at speedy manuvers? Also, not to hijack my own thread but didnt you run 7.17s with your 3.4 and 40s in your old truck? was it an auto? how did you like it? Im trying to decide what gears to run still and looking for experience with a similar set up. Thanks
