working on my go kats, i want to figure out the output of the stator on them so i can figure out if i can hook up a radio i have laying around.
Do i just run a meter between the + lead and batt. to get the amps its putting out?
these things have full ligs turn signals and even a 12v lighter plug, so i think i am fine, but i dont want to blow up anything.

Hook the raido up and turn it on,then start the motor ..... rev it up abit and check the voltage at the battery......

There should be a three to five wired plug coming from the alternator out of the side of the motor. If the thing runs, you should be able to measure an increasing AC voltage between any combination of the three wires that are yellow or white with a cloth like insulation as there are typically three windings.
Connect the volt meter to any two of the wires in AC mode and rev it up the engine. AC voltage should increase from the base line reading substantially with RPM.
If it doesn't or reads 0 that phase of the winding is open or shorted. If the AC voltage increases on all three phases of the windings when reved it is working fine.
If you want to check the rectifier/regulator output do this. Check battery voltage with the engine and key off. Then start it and check it again. It should typically be higher than the actual measured battery voltage with the engine off. Keep in mind that the regulator/rectifier will only read about 7 or so volts if you just measure it with a volt meter at the plug end of it as they need a load in order to switch from half field to full field or full output if you will.
YMMV & good luck!
