Well I'm about to make the jump into Jeep territory, changing over from Yota's. I've found a 88 model 4 banger with the carb. Engine has 132,000 DOCUMENTED miles, its on its second owner and the current owner has had for almost 3 yrs. Has a 3 inch body lift, yuk, and 33's, brand new all terrains. Everything else is stock and it has absolutely no Rust, anywhere!!! New softop with everything. Its worth 2.000 right, even if the engine is shit. Let me know some typical jeep things to look for that may be wrong. I'm mechanically inclined and know what i'm doing pretty well so tell me some trouble spots to look for. I'm a e-4 in the military and have a wife and two kids so the coin is kinda' short here. let me know.

well , check where the tub meets the roll cage, inside the shock mount up forward under the shackle mount ( tech term?) take a magnet with you and hold it out from the body randomly slect body parts fenders coners look under the dash for screwy wiring and pop the wheels off to check the brakes good luck

Engine, tranny, transfercase, and rearend are junk but hell most of us change that stuff out anyway.

Hey, the 4.0L is a good motor.

The AX15 tranny isn't bad per se', not as good as other trannies. But.. personally its got a shift pattern I like. I hate the T18, etc. for its long throws. The NV4500 would be my next choice after the AX15, either that or a TF727.

Depending on what you plan on doing... the NP231 with a 32 spline output is fairly durable. Chain drive cases are not given enough credit. Though... you can't twin-stick them. :(

The D30 is pretty durable too, with an 88' , it should even be a RC diff. I've seen the D30 survive being abused with 35" tires, and for a while with 38.5 SX before the owner swapped to his D44HP. Not b ecause the D30 exploded, just because he was really pushing the D30.

The D35c is a POS.. .ok to 33" tires, but I wouldn't go beyond that.

Depends on what you plan on wheeling... how you drive, etc.

Its a heavy pig and its a 4.2 in the '88 and the carb sucks.

No AX15 in '88 either maybe lucky enough that its the BX10:flipoff2:

For the money of a 32 output put that money towards an atlas.

The '88 has a D35 no C, no c-clips so its not quite as bad as the D35C but the stock shafts are 1.19" the supperior axles will take care of that though.

If you are on a budget shop around for a six cylinder and get what you want. If you are planning on swapping out everything then go for it.

I would normally agree with that... BUT... depends on the usage of the case, not everyone needs an atlas. The 32 spline output SYE only costs around $300. If you don't plan on 4:1 gears, etc. its worth the money for the SYE kit.

Trevor

Missed the 4cyl part, if its so its fuel injected and a very good deal. The TBI four cylinder is way better than the carb'd 4.2 I even prefer it to the 4.0 but I am sure others will dissagree on that.
Buy it.
