: Honda Foreman ES help please
Scott@Rockstomper 05-28-2010, 04:56 PM Sorry, I don't know quads well at all, but hopefully somebody handy knows what I'm after...
'97 Foreman ES, cranks, but no run, unless I dump gas down the carb throat. Dies as soon as the gas dumped down runs out. Sticker says it's a 433cc.
It's my inlaws', but my FIL bought it used; MIL didn't ride it hardly at all. FIL is not in condition to tell me about its history (part of why I'm where I am, trying to fix stuff for my MIL).
It has (had--I drained it) fuel. Half a tank or more, ran out easily from the fuel line into a jug.
The choke seems to be stuck, but it's stuck in the "normal running" position, and the quad is in a heated garage; nonfunctioning choke shouldn't be an issue, at least not right now.
It doesn't appear to have a fuel pump at all, just a gravity feed. Does it have a fuel shutoff solenoid? I found a copper object that kinda looks like a temp sender, two wires going to it, in the bottom of the carb. Doesn't appear to be a solenoid (I took it out of the carb), but I'm stumped as to what else could stop fuel flow.
It also runs if you use the little primer pump on the left side of the carb--again, only till the fuel pumped in, runs out.
Thanks!

If it is not getting fuel to the bowl then I would bet the petcock has a bunch of trash in the little screens, clean it up really good and then do this V.
Pull the carb apart and let soak in 50/50 pinesol and water overnight, clean all the jets and reassemble.
Supergper 05-30-2010, 09:25 PM What Sturgell said. There's nothing special or fancy about those bikes. If it's not running properly then pull the carb and clean it. It's extremely easy and I'm 100% you can handle it. :D If you have parts cleaner, clean it real good, if you can, get some parts dip (I just use the one gallon can from Checker) and let everything soak. When I managed our fleet of Foremans, if the bike sat for too long, the carbs would get gummed up and you'd have to clean the jets out. No big deal.
EDIT: I'd say check spark, because it could be a kill switch or similar, but since you can dump fuel down the carb and it runs, leads me to believe it's just a gummed up carb.
#rawkon 05-31-2010, 09:20 AM Gummed up carb, Pretty cut and dried.
jhama78 05-31-2010, 11:01 AM x whatever number i am on the gummed up carb.
Dieselmh 06-03-2010, 11:12 AM The thing with the wires is actually a heater for the carb. I think it turns on when it gets below 40 or something like that. Don't worry about that. Like everyone is saying, the carb is probably filled with crap. You can do a decent cleaning job on those carbs without having to replace the gaskets, normally. Once you get it off of the bike, you can usually use a can of carb cleaner with a straw attached to clean most of the ports. It's worth a shot, before you bother buying a rebuild kit.
Scott@Rockstomper 06-03-2010, 01:58 PM Thanks all! I ended up cleaning the carb out really well, but ran into trouble too: the choke, or what's labeled as the choke, has a seized control cable. Obviously, nobody's used that in years, but once I removed it and fiddled with the valve directly, after a good cleaning of the carb, I was able to get it running. A workable replacement cable was unavailable anywhere local to my inlaws, so I wired the valve into a good-running-once-warm position, and will try to source a replacement cable in Denver, to install the next time I'm out there. Part of the problem is that their local shops insist that the bike doesn't have a choke, even after I handed them a cable with a choke pictogram on it, but I'll deal with that on my own.
