: Coil Q's for the Toyota Owner
Greg@RME 10-18-2002, 09:42 PM OK, I'm posting out of my usual Forum, so Flame me if you must.
I've been wanting to go with a Triangulated 4 Link in the rear of my '85 Toyota p/u and have been searching for info about Coil Spring rates on a Toyota. There isn't too much info, besides one or 2 Toy owners, running Aerostar Coils.
I have been doing alot of reading/searching in the Sammi Forum about the CircleTrack Coils and think you guys seem to be on the right track with these things. Over last weekend I got to checkout Mike Shaffers old Black Sammi at SuperCrawl, with CircleTrack coils and a Toyota Drivetrain. I know a Back-Halved Sammi is way diffrent than a full framed Toyota, but the wheels in my head started turning.....
My question is, do you guys think the 150# coils from Jegs would be enough for a Toyota p/u, with a light weight Flatbed?
Does anyone know what coils Glenn at RRO uses? His kits seem to get impressive wheel travel.

The spring wieght would probably do but, it's the hieght you'd run into a prob I'd think. I'd look into TJ front coils they are 150-165 Sr and around 17" tall instead of 14"
Greg@RME 10-18-2002, 11:36 PM Those are stock TJ coils? I'll look into them.
I just measured my truck, currently running 37's w/ Chevy leafs, 2" Block (:barf: ) and a hella long shackle.
Theres about 15" between the bottom of the frame and the top of the axle tube. I would imagine Spring Plates would be about 1" tall on each end, so a Loaded spring would be @ 13" tall.
Now, I guess I just need to figure out how much the spring would compress at a static load.

Yes stock, I'm not 100% sure on how tall they are, I just know they are taller than my HAL 14" springs. With 13 inches I'm sure you can get the HAL's to work, because you can adjust how tall your spring plates are a little, but I'd prolly go a tad stiffer now that I think about it.

Yeah, that was my thought too. Mabey something in the 200-225# range would work better. I need to do some research on Spring Rates in the rear of a Toy.
Rockrat 10-19-2002, 12:48 PM Yes they are 17 " tall unloaded I have 4 of them about to go undr tha sami (Stock 2002 TJ front springs)

I was thinking, is if you made a light wieght flat bed to run the 150's, your wieght bias would be all out of wack. I'll go into the garage and see how tall my TJ coils are.
toooo soft for a toy, I can't remember my spring rate in my chopped up 4 runner. the first time around... the aero star ar way to soft, Used some other juckyard springs but then found the wild horses 3" lift progressive coils the best. a lot of toys running those or the 5" lift ones. due a search for them.
sh996 10-19-2002, 10:58 PM I'm running the HAL 150lb 14" coils in my sammy. With it loaded down with tools/parts/spare tire my rear springs sitting static are 10.5" tall. I'd lean toward the 17" TJ coils like Bill suggested.
I Lean 10-19-2002, 11:44 PM Hey Greg, the TJ-style front coils are a good start, since you have tons of options for spring rates. TJ's are the softest, XJ are a bit stiffer, I think 6cyl ZJ are a bit stiffer still, V8 ZJ are stiffer still--and you also have plenty of options for aftermarket coils in different rates, all with the same "ends", so all the springs will interchange as far as the mounts go.
Those are the springs that are under Braden's YJ, FWIW.
Greg@RME 10-20-2002, 02:51 PM Great, thanks for the info guys!
