Don't you now have a rig worthy of that event? Dboy could co-drive for ya.

I KNEW this was just the kind of thing you were rebuilding your Scout for... It seems to be what all the cool kids are doing (4x4 desert racing).

Good luck! If I didn't have a little dude that likes to poop his pants, I'd be there watching.

I wasn't really aiming to get into this type of thing but with my local wheeling area closed I find myself with more time on my hands. I've been getting into the PNW racing lately and enjoy it. This desert racing is just a spinoff of the PNW thing.......For now.:D

Dang, I was cool before cool was cool.

All of this fun racing and here I am thinking of spending the summer chasing the kids around and spending money on a new rig instead of fuel.

I skipped this past weekend's High Desert 100 (http://www.m4x4a.org/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&p=11664#11664) in Powell - I guess I would've had to beat Jason Paule if I'd gone.

The Columbus Wild West 100 is coming up in September along with a bunch of others between now and then, of course.

Centerville is 570 miles from here. It's the weekend after the JI BinderBash.. but I was just about to send my money to Tom Wood's instead of planning the trip to Spokane.

Good luck, Rick, and if there's anything I can do to help from over hear, holler - and if you want to come over for the Wild West 100 let me know.

This racing thing is addictive.

Thanks and I probably won't go but where is the wild west 100? Right now I have the weekend of the 11th open in September but no others.

Columbus, Montana.

Directions are at least easy - get on I-90, head East. Stop when you get to Columbus (if you reach Billings, you went too far)

I think it'd be about a 750 mile tow for you.

ProTruck driver Al Hogan puts on the Wild West 100 - they had the first one last October and a bunch of KOH cars showed up. This year they wanted to move it to September - either the 11th or 18th weekend. Right around my birthday - and around the same time as my wife was thinking of going to spectate the Primm 300, too. ;)

Do you have a fresh-air system yet, Rick?

I have a helmet pumper on the shelf for the new car that hasn't been installed yet if you want to borrow one.

I  my RaceAir.

No....I don't want to invest in much for this one race. If I were to decide to continue then maybee...

Ok......we gotta see some pics of this rig.

Couple snap shots I took today.
Race trim, running these small tires......I decided that blocking visibility wasn't acceptable so I did a Lexan panel for the side. Also Binder fab side view mirrors (removable). Not pictured is the rear aluminum firewall, what PITA that was. Horn, rear amber light, assload of maintenance items. Number plate looks like ass but oh well. I plan to raise it another inch or two as well. This week I have to repack the front wheel bearings and I think it's ready to go. :D

:laughing::laughing: Sorry Rick but those pics are so startling with the "little" shoes I just busted out laughing. What size are they? Seriously though the rig is looking great and I hope you do well in the race. How much up and down travel are you going to have?

Binder
06-20-2010, 06:47 PM
I agree the little tires do look retarded but I don't want to use up my good stickie tires driving around in the desert. Also this brings the gear ratio down to more useable.
If I raise it two inches it'll have about 8" uptravel in the back with IIRC 8" down travel too. 6" uptravel in the front with 8" down travel. I can't remember now but IIRC the fronts are 14" and rear 16". I'll have to measure.....
The tires are 31's.

It was a fun experience and honestly it kicked my ass physically. There are a few small issues with the rig to fix this week but no major breakage. Though I was unable to race Sunday if it didn't break on Saturday it will never break!....
The race track itself is setup with lots of twists and turns and would be much more fun if groomed a bit smoother. I know at the end of the day everyone had to race the same track but my buggy never having the shocks tuned for anything over like 20 MPH made for a VERY rough ride. The specs of my rig put me in Pro buggy class:shaking: so there was no chance for me to be competitive. There was a class 1 car out there that laped me twice like it was nothing on a 11 mile course.:(
I accomplished what I wanted to though and I got my feet wet and learned much this weekend. Next time I'll be better prepaired and know what I'm getting into.:smokin:

So what you are saying is - some shock tuning and or better shocks - and a 400+ HP motor swap and you'll be back at it?

The desert guys will all tell you "shock, shocks, shocks" - HP isn't even that big of a deal until you have the suspension dialed in.

With my heavy IH in front, doubling up the front shocks was a priority to get all of the dampening I could get.

Interestingly though, to make it fly flat, you need more REAR shock - insufficient rear rebound leads to the rear suspension stuffing, then unloading as you come off a jump and it spring-boards the tail high.

This doesn't seem right, but after violently removing your rear shocks and hitting a jump, it might become poignantly clear as you're on the throttle hoping the front axle can outdrive the rear that's trying to do a flyby.

Glad you had fun, Rick. Welcome. :grinpimp:

Yes definately power isn't my problem right now. I couldn't use what I have minus a couple very short sections....Jumping isn't so much the issue either it's more the rough small washbord size woops. Each one is like a 40MPH impact! My shoulders are so sore from being jammed into the shoulder belts like a million times.:(
Yes eventually my pussy will stop oozing and I'll get over it.
