My problem.

I am trying to find the source of semi-overheating on my 76 2F... New water pump/ thermostat/ took the radiator out and water flows freely easily and radiator appears clean. PO said it was redone 20K agoThe water pump works great with the radiator out and flows well.. I am reading 100* at the bottom of the radiator and 180* at the top with infrared thermometer. That would seem normal. The engine doesn't seem too hot until I drive short trips and the blows bigtime into the overflow. Timing is right on and runs good except for the annoying burst of anti freeze every twenty minutes. I tried several rad caps also. Top radiator hose is hot and lower is cold unless I drive a long way. Factory temp gauge shows intermittent overheat also. Going to get a aftermarket temp gauge today. Just can't figure out the burst of antifreeze every so often. Thermostat is new and in correctly? I have the pointed part facing up and the copper lug down??

Any thoughts on what to try next?

looking for a working link to the LCML archives. I heard it was moved and worked elsewhere.

I have this old link but it won't allow a search http://www.birfield.com/cgi-bin/wilma/landcruisers

If it's the original radiator, get the 4 core CCOT unit. I have a 76 as well. Spent $60 getting it rodded out only to have it leak a little later and still not cool well. I have since bought the CCOT radiator and never looked back.

Sounds like a faulty/misinstalled thermostat. Is it a factory Toyota thermostat? Is the rubber gasket on the top? I got an aftermarket POS thermostat and it was crap. Went to the dealer and got a real one. No flucuating temps anymore...

Well she does run cool without a thermostat so I am thinking t-stat or radiator cap. Thermostat came from Napa.
I put the Napa thermostat in boiling water and it worked great.
What is the lb. radiator cap I need . Dealer did not have one in stock:confused: for a FJ40. I know different thermostats are rated at different lbs. Could some one check theirs.

thanks
