: Dirt Grips....considering buying a set.
Weasel 10-19-2002, 12:16 PM The Parnelli Dirt Grips. I'm very seriously considering getting these for my next tire upgrade. I am going to be running these on a DD and in icy/snow packed highways, snow drifted farm pastures, rual dirt roads, pavement, little mud(try to stay out of this stuff as much as possible), Black Hills rocks, and rain. Desert Rat offers a road hazzard but do you guys think I would really need it on the PJ's? They are suppost to be a pretty tough tire. Let me have it. And yes I have searched.....:flipoff2:

if you are going to rip the side wall or pop them then get the road hazzard if you are not going to ruin them then don't. :flipoff2:
Jeepmangled87 10-19-2002, 01:00 PM from what Ive seen the PJ's sucks, why not go with a swamper, goodyear MTR or a BFG they would give you much better performance

Well no shit....that's the million dollar question huh. :flipoff2: :flipoff2: I don't know how the damn things will hold up. I thought they where to have good sidewalls but never seeing the tires before I don't know. If I don't get these then I'm getting BFG KM's.

More details please. Terrian, how they sucked, ect.
incontrol 10-19-2002, 02:16 PM The only thing I have heard bad about the PJ's are the price.
Brutpwr 10-19-2002, 03:23 PM My buddy just got a set for his fullsize Blazer--has not driven on them yet but they sure look sweet. They are 38" Radials on 16.5 rims with Load Range E 10ply. They are on a set of custom 9" Nationals with crossover steering and 14" Bilstein 7100's. Truck is on a Dana 60 and 14 bolt. Should have the brakes hooked up and we'll take it for a spin! Looks pimp on the polished 12" wide M/T's.

misfitcj 10-19-2002, 03:31 PM my friend has some in 35 and they wear down really fast, he really bitter about them because they were expensive. I would go mud bfg............ltr
Weasel 10-19-2002, 03:41 PM really, they wear fast, huh. Everything I had heard untill now said they were wearing very nicely.

Whaddya want, a cookie? That didn't help the guy one fawking bit.
Why not MT/R's? Peoople say they're a pretty good D/D tire...and they are certainly less expensive than a PJ, right?
Weasel 10-19-2002, 04:37 PM Yes the MTR's are a a bit cheaper...not much though. I just don't feel like jumping on the MTR bandwagon....not sure why. I havn't ruled the out completly yet though. I will probably just go with BFG KM's and sipe them if I don't go the PJ route.
60seriesguy 10-19-2002, 04:44 PM The other day I parked my BFG-equipped Land Cruiser next to a lifted Dodge Ram with Goodyear MT/R's just as the guy was parking. I've been considering the MT/R's for my own truck, so I asked the guy how he liked them. He said they were decent, but had worn quickly. They had less than 20K miles on them and they looked WORN, much more than my BFG MT's with similar mileage. I was kind of bummed out, I had my heart set on a set of 37x12.5" MT/R's but now I'm not sure. Sidewall weakness aside, I've had excellent experience with BFG's, had a set of 33x12.5 MT's last me 63,000+ miles of combined DD'ing and wheeling...hard to beat.
Truck needs to get to trails that are FAR away, so Swampers and/or other bias-plys are out of the question. Haven't heard much good about SSR's either....
bad booger 10-19-2002, 05:50 PM I had some 33" SSR's on my toy. They were really good but I don't think they performed much better in the mud than the BFG MT's. They have great sidewall protection and they hardley wore in 20K miles.
GPERX4 10-19-2002, 05:55 PM What ever tire you get I would get the road hazard .I had a set of newer tires on the back that I had the road hazardon ,but had the older set on the front.I was down to Livingston Ky. this spring and ripped the side out of one of the front. Got home and got two new front tires and yes I did get the road hazard. The salesmen did tell me not to tell them I was off roading but that I got run off the road and damaged the tire. And no I haven't had any more tire problems but they are covered.
IMO, they are a good tire. I used to work at a local offroad shop, and never got any complaints. One guy had some, and when they wore out he got a different kind, forget what kind, didnt like it and went back and got some PJ's. They wear nice, and they balance nicely. If you are putting on alot of road miles I would get them.
DesertOutlaw 10-19-2002, 06:45 PM My TSL-SX's wore down in about 20,000 miles of DDing and weekend 'wheeling. They did poor in the sand with those lugs and stiff sidewalls. I now have a set of BFG KOs and they float much, much better, and grab loose dirt and rocks without any complaing. My mileage improved on the highway and so did braking. The SX's looked trick on my Ranger, and the KO's look plain Jane conservative...:(
Brutpwr 10-19-2002, 08:00 PM Whaddya want, a cookie? That didn't help the guy one fawking bit...
Ok--I got cut off midstream by a customer call...I was at work...
Anyway I did mention that they look real nice. In the 16.5 size they are 10 ply which is nice for those of you with heavy campers and/or tow rigs as the load range E's always tow nicer than the load range C tires. Much less wishy washy/side to side slop which results in a much more stable towing platform. I did not get a chance to mention the guys at Four Wheel Parts recommend them if you want something more streetable than the
Super Swampers and/or Mickey Thompsons and want a large wide radial for what thats worth... I think most here know that. Well the Blazer may be a runner this weekend so I be able to add some more comments later.

If you like riding on some old fat guys initials all the time, go right on ahead...
Seriously, though, when they did traction testing, was it just a coincidence that PJ lug tread pattern gripped dirt the best?
The only ones I have taken a good look at were some 36x16.5's on a white ford ps diesel... anyway, the guy said they had 2000 miles on them and they gripped great, blah, blah, blah as if he wheeled the thing. For only having 2k on them, they sure did not have very deep tread. Maybe they don't come with much to begin with, or maybe they do wear fast on a big heavy truck.
P|n-BaLL 10-20-2002, 08:07 AM I have a set of PJ's here in my garage. 20K on them and no useful life left. They did drive and perform fine on the hyw, but were less than impressive in anything remotely ressembling mud/snow.
I also have a set of mtr's here with 38K on them and still decent useable tread. Both were run under ideal conditions so I would say the PJ's wear exceptionally fast. FWIW I prefer the MTR hands down, it has a better sidewall, much better wet weather performance and worked awesome on snow packed roads as well as deep off road fluff.
and since I wouldn't run a BFG if they were free I can't offer an opinion on those.

who can supply pics of the tires in question and the wear if it will help

my mtr's on my DD wore out in under 20k. i went back to bfg and have 19k on them now with 3/4 tread left.
fwiw.. try the pj. they look cool and at least they are diffrent then all the bfg/mtr looking tires. my .02
DesertOutlaw 10-20-2002, 11:15 AM How sturdy has everyone found the PJs' sidewalls to be? My friend swore by the MT/R which he eventually ran into the ground. While he was driving his rig down in Baja, Mex. a small rock on a dirt road sliced open the sidewall on that MT/R. I run BFG KOs, and I haven't experienced anything like this happening yet. Sure, the backroads in Baja are exceptionally bad - something that BFG and Parnelli Jones advertise as being a part of. But, of the BFG, PJ, or the MT/R which one has the best survival rate?
P|n-BaLL 10-20-2002, 11:27 AM hmmmmm...... mind ya this just my experiance.
I abused my MTR's baddly in sum sharp Colorado shale with no visible damage...*same trail ripped up some bfg's* but the PJ's have done well as well.....want I can go cut a hole in easch one and see LMAO

Weasel 10-20-2002, 12:26 PM Norm what kind of rig do you run. Interesting what you said about the snow though.
In this thread I found SAR_Sammy says they bite harder then any other tire he's ran.

Here's the other thread I found.

I think I'm gonna try them out. Hopefully I can get them to last a bit longer.
P|n-BaLL 10-20-2002, 05:07 PM Both sets were run on a fullsize Ford Bronco. Mind you snow and hyw condition vary in differant locals. But up here they were not as good as the MTR in the snow. As for trying em I dunn see a reason why not to....and one thing in favour of the PJ's is I think they were rounder than the Goodyears. Good luck and let us all know how ya like em. My biggest beef was the mud and wet road conditions (slush)

twistedmetal 10-20-2002, 05:24 PM Hee, Hee- Always funny seeing yourself get quoted!
Run the PJ's. What do you have to lose? Obviously, the mtrs wear just as fast, BFG's should just COME with ripped sidewalls and save everyone the hassle of fixing them offroad, and Swampers get no mileage. What other choices are there? Claws are OK as long as you never have to back up in mud and snow. BFGs still suck. I, myself, would ONLY run a PJ if I strayed from Swampers. Like I said, I WATCHED them work in the Black Hills. I drove the damn thing, I was the one who took them to get mounted and balanced. Which, by the way, was incredible. I had to sit and look for the weights!
By some BFG ATs for all around use, and find a cheap set of slightly used Swampers for your Hills trips. Or, just buy some PJs.
Weasel 10-20-2002, 06:00 PM Sweet...I was hoping you would pipe up Twistedmetal. And Pin-Ball, maybe they will wear better on a lighter rig. The PJ's it is. I'm gonna be ordering this week so I'll let you all know how it goes.
