Well I jacked up my shoulder and I cant wrestle the detroit in the front anymore.I did a search and came up wirh nothing. My main question is will a power steering box out of a 79 waggy work in a 79 CJ5?

The short answer is Yes.

The Box yes is a direct bolt in, but you will hafta change the steering shaft or column (Bonus is Waggy's have nicer wheels and tilt) because the power steering box is longer. The next thing that poses a complication is the tie rod end on the Manual Steering CJ is much smaller than Waggy. I used the tie rod end from the Waggy because it fits in the Pitman Arm on the power steering box and then turned the threaded portion down on the lathe and rethreaded it to fit the tie rod on the CJ. For a pump i grabbed one at the local junkyard off of an AMC concorde. It bolts right up and the only mod needed to it is you'll hafta bend the pressure hose slightly to clear the bottom of the radiator and even then its a B*$@# to start. I did this swap three years ago and I love it. That box has enough power to mangle tie rods if you bind the wheels up and turn the wheel. I can crank mine around all day long in the rocks with one finger.

In fact that is the preferred box IMO. Look for the last 2 digits of 76 where the serial # is located. If they are 76 you just scored a variable ratio box.

Thanks for the help! I finished the conversion on Tuesday and it kicks ass! I did need to get a CJ intermediate shaft and pitman arm. I also found out the Waggy output shaft is indexed different and all you have to do is grind off the big splines and move it to where you need it. I cant believe the difference and for only $76!

You don't need the entire intermediate shaft. The bell coupler on the bottom may need changed out, but the entire shaft is an unnecessary swap. Most Waggie boxes actually use the same size coupler as a manual CJ. Power CJ boxes use a larger size. The coupler kits are available from Four Wheel Drive Hardware. I'd try the stock manual one before I ordered another though. I've done nine CJ manual to power swaps using Waggie boxes and only one of the Waggie boxes had the larger input shaft.

I did have the larger diameter input shaft. I was lucky enough that FNJeep had one for $20 or the swap would have been alot more expensive.
