Is a stock ranger T case worth using? Buddy of mine and I are thinking about making his deisel ranger into a rock crawler. The easiest way I can think of for the transfer case is to find a tranny and t case out of a 4x4 ranger and then we were thinking a divorced NP205 behind that? What kind a reputation do those cases have?

i know a few people running em behind 302's. i would say a middle of the road case.
check out www.therangerstation.com and www.rrorc.com for alot of tech. the diesel is a 2.3 i believe, so you should be able to use the 2.9 or 4.0 tranny(same bolt pattern i think, maybe just gas burning 2.3) we have a member that made a 1354 double case.

Not sure but some old fart we were looking at buying another deisel said it was a different pattern that the 6s so he said that earlier 4x4s used a bolt on bell housing like the one that is in the truck and a guy would have to find one of those to bolt to our bell housing. Don't know if that is true, but the guy claimed to have tried it.

i believe around 85 they used a c-5 auto. not exactly sure what he's running. but most of the running gears were offered in 2x or 4x versions.

There were two different cases used in Rangers. The Borg-Warner 1350 and 1354.
The 1350 usually has a female slip-spline front output whereas the 1354 always has regular yokes. They're 26 spline.
The 1354 is pretty strong, I would say its considerably stouter than a NP231 as it has a 6 planet lowgear (usually) and an output shaft that is not necked down anywhere along its length.
The 1350 is similar internally, but uses a four planet lowgear.
I've also seen 'em behind 302s without problems. Although I have the 4.0L still, I've done four-wheel burnouts on pavement repeatedly and it held up fine (long story. Trying to extricate a stuck-in-the-driveway motorhome! ).
