: Cam selection for the Mudders

Time to pick out a cam for my new motor. This will be for 70/30 offroad/onroad rig. There are probably alot of other factors that should go into this but here it goes. Its a 514 ford in a '73 bronco used for muddin and sand blastin with 44" boggers. Right now it has a roller cam with about 254 duration and about .647 lift. Yeah its pretty radical so I am thinking of swapping it out. Any good recomendations to make it a little more user friendly? Or should it be just fine with this cam in such a large displacement motor? I am curious what others are using.

Thanks again!

Define user freindly. What are you trying to acheive here? More power at lower RPM's? Better mileage?? tell us.... Why not call up comp cams, crane cams, (and a few other companies) and see what they have to say.

Most of the mud guys I know would consider your .647 lift cam too mild already ;)

I'll second that. My mud drag 514s use lot's more cam than that. That's about like my DDs cam.

in. 254 ex. 262

lift .727/.727

This is the solid roller cam that a bud of mine is putting in his 460 for next bogging season. By this comparison .647 is mild(er) It all depends on what ya want though.

go bigger I say, mud and sand are both all about high RPM's anyways, right???

what do I know, though, my shit would prolly sink if i took it to a sand dune...

Thats not really all that wild of a cam truthfully. I run more lift and duration in my biginch Ford. I would probably try it and see what you think...if you already have and you feel it's "too much" then call one of the cam companies * everyone has a fav* and get yrself something more along the lines of what you want performance wise. Opinion's always differ from person to person....myself I see no issues with a 500hp BB in a off road toy..but then again I also believe EVERY internal combustion gas powered rig on the planet should have a 20lb NOS bottle as an addition to that 500 hp also......so each his own.

Nitrous is illegal in MOST of the "truck-based" mud racing classes ;)

Yeah I know...I always have to make a big show of removing the bottle for them in tech....ect ect ect.... I use the bottle for trailriding :p

I dunn mud race it these days anymore....I got tired of the crappy events, the rules that change to fit the weekend and of course the biggest issue...I would rather be on the trail.

That's a shame. I've been to more than my share of crappy events & rules that "homered" my truck. But, they're probably the exception rather than the norm around here. As for trail vs. mud, most of us who enjoy both around here do the mud thing in Summer & trail in Fall/Spring. Summer trail riding is just too miserable hot down here unless you've got AC :( I used to do both, but went the mud-only route when we lost the last of our local trails a few years back (thankfully, there have been new options created recently).

Beavis..by user friendly I mean will I be able to drive this on the street and be happy? Will I be able idle down trails when I need to? How much maintenance will a mechanical roller like this need? Will I be happy taking this cam through places like Tellico?

Tex....Yeah I thought your experience would make my cam look mild. Although that s agood thing in my case. I dont want something too radical that I cant idle over a few stones with in between banging through the mud pits of course.

Pin-Ball...I am with ya man. Ive got a 150hp shot on tap for those really crazy, close your eyes and hold on times.

Looks likle I should be OK with this cam. I havent fired it up yet so we will see when it comes time. Just finished one side of the custom headers and hopefully by next week I will have the other side done. Wish me luck.

Suprised I didnt take any flack from the rockers on this site for being a mudder. Come awn, you guys arent gettin soft are ya?:flipoff2:

no, that cam will not be easy to try and idle down a trail, itd be sort of like trying creep through a tight and twisty trail on a souped up yamaha banshee. That motor with that cam will only begin to be happy above 1500-2000 rpm. My comp extreme 4x4 cam with approx .540/.560 lift and 226/234 @.050 duration is sometimes a pain on the trailer cause it will not idle over things like it used to when the motor had the stock cam. I have to get my motor to about 1500 rpm for it to begin to make power. But i dont do all tha tmuch trailer riding either.. i like mud:flipoff2:

that cam will be nice for mud/sand, though

Yeah, although admittedly I've got a little hydraulic number in my personal mouse-powered racer :emb3:
