: Crca Carnage
tknoll 10-20-2002, 01:49 PM Those of you that left, YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED. Our events go LATE! Next time you'll be ready. Team Purple( Tomb Raider) finished the entire pro course in 7:45.? An outstanding show for the spectators and confirmation to us that the course was doable!!
It just took the whole day to figure out the best game plan. Special thanks to all the competitors that came out yesterday!! I know you Pros got beat up pretty bad, but I do hope you had a good time and will be back for more in January!
Our next event is January 11th!! Check the website out for more information. Give me a couple of days to get it updated though.
Team Extreme Image, Team All Pro and Team Purple, thanks for doing Carnage Canyon again and doing it with STYLE!!

nobody20 10-20-2002, 02:44 PM Tonya, are you gonna post some pix?:bounce2: :bounce2: :bounce2:
RockRanger 10-20-2002, 03:07 PM There are some pictures posted by bobedtoy83 in teh chit chat section. I had a blast at the event. Next time put the out houses closer to the rocks. Also are there any plans of making changes to the vehicle requirements to open them up to more vehicles ( specificly the stock class)
Matt
tknoll 10-20-2002, 03:18 PM Chris is going to post some pics and the All Pro Trail report in just a little bit. Tony Bothwell from Rockcrawler.com will also have his pictures and write up very soon. :flipoff2:
Chris Geiger 10-20-2002, 03:30 PM I am processing the pics now. Look for good ones here in about an hour.
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 03:30 PM Here's a shot of Kevin stuck in the crack- broke the rear driveline, and one of the suspension links.
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 03:32 PM One of the all-pro buggy entering Carnage canyon
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 03:35 PM here's Jon finishing the last climb out of the canyon
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 03:37 PM The JP crew entering the crack- this rig was for sale.
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 03:40 PM Here they come out of the canyon- two right side broken axles and a few dents- the for sale sign is gone.
tommybronco 10-20-2002, 03:43 PM Is that really the new all pro buggy?
How come we have not heard to much about it?
CAn we get some more pics and specs on it?
I herd it has vw drivetrain.
I am heading to the All pro site now to see if i can find some info
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 03:54 PM Team purple entering the canyon. They were the only ones to make a full run in the finals. The portal axles gave them tons of clearance.
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 03:59 PM Chris will have to give the specs. Jon is testing it for the maker from what I heard. Its running a vw engine with T350 auto tranny and Atlas pointed towards the frontend. The driveshafts come up right next to the driver on the right hand side of the vehicle. It has 3 link suspension and tons of travel, maybe this pic will show more
tknoll 10-20-2002, 04:01 PM Nice pics 85toyboy!! Thanks for getting them up so fast! If I don't know you, introduce yourself to me in January.
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 04:02 PM One more pic, this guy flopped on the Modified course then winched it back over and was able to complete over 1/2 the course. Pretty impressive.
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 04:06 PM Tonya, I was the big guy with the C4x4.com club. I plan on running my toy in January for the fun of it.
This was a built willys that was too nice to be running the Canyon, It broke the front driveshaft before entering the nasty stuff. Everyone let out a sigh of relief cause it was just too nice to mess up.
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 04:08 PM Can you spot the trail fix? This is how Jon got the team All-Pro rig back on the course for the Finals. Too bad it broke again just after competing the canyon.
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 04:14 PM Chris spotting Jon, making it look easy in the finals- before the breakage.
tknoll 10-20-2002, 04:16 PM Absolutely great stuff. Sorry I missed the service this morning. I had no transportation. Hope it was good! See you in January. Talk to you soon.
:)
85toyboy 10-20-2002, 04:26 PM This toy drove like mad during the Modified Competition, he really put on a show- as well as his spotter.
tknoll 10-20-2002, 05:03 PM Roll Over Roy and Trail Hand Dan! Great Driver, Great Spotter and Great Pic!
Roy played on the course until the "wee" hours last night and rolled again a few times I hear. I am sure that Jeff will fill us all in. The CRCA gets to play "after" the action, all night long!
Chris Geiger 10-20-2002, 06:05 PM Chris spotting Jon, making it look easy in the finals- before the breakage.
Spotting? Hell no I was running for my life trying to get away from that crazy guy chasing me :)
Bummer about loosing the rear link again, at the time of failure we had all the hard stuff behind us and we were at negitive 1 minute. Team Purple were at plus 3 minutes at the same point, so we were a full 4 minutes ahead of there time with all the hard stuff behind us.
Team All Pro were the only ones to do the optional entrance and the only ones to drive through carnage canyon without winching.
Congrats to Team Purple.
Looking forward to the rematch in Jan!
Jeepskickass 10-20-2002, 06:08 PM Tonya, thanks for hosting such a fun event. It's nice to see that even the relatively stock rigs can compete, and possibly earn some great winnings. We're trying to talk a couple of our club members into competing next event. And I'm sure that the few problems encountered will not be an issue next time... See ya in January!
RE:Todd 10-20-2002, 06:11 PM I'm looking forward to the rematch also, because I plan on being in modified. Chris, know where I can get some bedside's and fenders for my Kinda $Runner :D :D ???
Great stuff Tonya, make sure you do the free event notification in the San Diego Union Trib so we can get more spectators out :D .
tknoll 10-20-2002, 06:13 PM I look forward to seeing the rematch between Team Purple and Team All Pro AND let's not forget Team Extreme Image. I even think our JP Competitors will come ready to rumble!!
Most importantly I hope you all had a good time and I look forward to seeing all of you again in January! :)
TheNerple 10-20-2002, 07:12 PM The buggy that Jon drove was built by nelson and nelson fabrications I believe. Jon doesn't have anything to do with it except he drives it. It is powered with a vw van engine that I heard puts out like 200+ horse power. The trans is a power glide not a 350. So I think it is 2:1 first and 1:1 second. It then runs an atlas 4.3 transfer case. Because the power train runs back wards the driveshafts connect to regular but flipped up to make high pinion 9 inches that run 6:50 or something for the axle reduction. They were Strange third members but I don't know what the axle splines are. The wheels base is 99 inches and the width was something close to toyota but Jon didn't know for sure. One more correcting, it was Chris and some other guy that got the buggy back to rolling, Jon just sat around talking with everyone. Got to give credit where credit is due! This buggy totally kicks ass, climbs like nobody's business and I think will do hella good and set a new standard in competition buggies. I'll post a bunch of pics when I get the film developed.

Great, I look forward to getting your modified entry information.
It's funny that you mentioned the SDUT, their smaller circulation, The Californian, stumbled on us during the event and have already committed to being involved with our next event and probably the series. I will make sure it is in the SDUT event notification and I hope I can actually get an article to run a week before the event.
See you soon.

tknoll 10-20-2002, 07:42 PM For any of you interested:
It is $30 for the stock class to compete. The modified class is $40. In order to make it more fair for the modified class, we created a pro class. This class has a $150 entry fee, and 100% of those fees go to cash prizes for this class.
In order to compete in any class, you must be a member of CRCA. It is $100 for one year membership. For that amout you get invitations to member only Play Days (two a year, we just had one in Sepember), tickets to the awards ceremony in April, quarterly newsletter, access to the memers only chat room(currently under construction), discount on all CRCA merchandise., and more. If you would like to check out our website it is www.californiarockcrawlersassociation.com.
We just gave Team Purple $1000 cash last night for winning the Pro Class, plus prizes, including an entire paint and body job from RVMD.

T Tonya, I'm real bad with names, I think I met you, but did I???? I was wearing a Tin:skull:Bender shirt in black, sand camo hat, glasses, etc????? I've already got the front fenders lined up, just got to figure out the skinns for the back :D :D :D .
Chris Geiger 10-20-2002, 07:55 PM Jon just sat around talking with everyone
It is the spotters job to ready the rig. The driver needs to work on stragity. Jon needed to clear his head and figure out what our best options were.
The other guy there helping was Ed Datin of Datin Fab. Ed used to work for Walker Evans and other famous racers. Ed has built over 60 different desert race trucks over the years. About 4 years ago Ed did the first solid axle swap for Jon on his (then gray) 4Runner. Datin Fab is the primary parts supplier for All Pro. Ed and Jon have worked very closely over the years on many of the parts and products All Pro sells. Ed was also the guy that built the chassis and suspension for Jon's first Rock Truggy.
With Ed and I on the job Jon new we would get it done on time. As it turns out we had about one and a half hours longer to fix the rig than we thought. In hindsight I wish we had taken the broken arm back to the shop and did a better job putting it back together.
If you saw Jon drive the second time it was clear he had a plan!

Can't wait to see more Tin Benders on the course, I'll see you in 3 months!

You are ON IT! COOL!
RockHound 10-20-2002, 09:10 PM Trailhand Dan and all of us played hard till at least 2-2:30 this morning Ron was determined to make it up the 3 minute bonus route that Jon took but ended floping it once there and once in the sluice after Jeff turned the lights back on for some more late night fun. I heard comments when THD was trying to get roy over the sluice " Why dont you puke on him Dan" That has to be the highlight of the weekend!!
tknoll 10-21-2002, 12:31 PM
Team Purple 10-21-2002, 02:13 PM We had a blast, minor sheet metal damage(hood and rear panels), lost a tire, snapped a rear King, but all in all had a great time.
We were sorry to see the other competitors with so many problems, would liked to have seen a closer points standing once the dust settled, but we gave it our all each and every run, and everything held together. Got to love it...
We would like to thing the CRCA staff for putting on another GREAT event, can't wait for the next one in Jan.
But might as well start it now, Team All Pro, Red Bull, Team Extreme Image, Team JP, as well as other Pro teams that would like to play in our house, Just remember one thing, When playing in the PURPLE house we will let the dogs OUT!!! :flipoff2:
Ok, OK, someone had to start it we only have 2 months...
But seriously, Can't wait to wheel with you all again, See you in Jan... for series #2
Once again GREAT event CRCA!!!

LIQUID LOCKERS ALWAYS GET YOU THERE :jester:Trailhand Dan is as advertised. That boy will give the shirt off his back. Funnier than shit too. Next time you happen to catch ol' THD around the campfire do yourself the favor of getting him started. He's got a million of 'em.
tknoll 10-21-2002, 09:51 PM Uh Oh, Dustin is in the game.
Look out Roy, I heard there are people looking to steal your spotter. THD is something of a celebrity now! Good spotters are hard to find. :D
RedBullJeep 10-21-2002, 11:34 PM I wish I had been in this game...but somehow, I'm glad I wasn't. Cathy was obviously much more careful than I would have been and in the end, that's a real good thing as the rig will be in SEMA in just two weeks.
I need to thank Cathy for giving it a shot and knowing when to call it quits. I know it was a bit embarrassing to have to "time out" at the starting line, but after seeing the course Friday evening, I was glad to hear the news on Saturday that the only suffering was a broken hub. I heard the carnage on all of the other rigs...I really feel lucky.
I am glad that the event was a success and obviously have to congratulate the winners...especially my future be-otch Ron and his boss, Melanie, for completing that course. YOU TWO ROCK!
I heard Jim Reel (JE Reel driveline) was out there showing his drivelines and helped out with Bunderant's rig...he did the same for me at MoonRocks and that is something that deserves a little recognition. Thanks for supporting us Jim.
Also, I want to congratulate my buddies, Kelly and Jody, with the Red JSA CJ that rolled in the modified class, I saw the pics and say that if you got it back on all fours and still had time to make some progress, that's a job well done. Thank god for steroids!
Finally, thanks to the CRCA for working so hard to put on these events. I can't wait to compete in your next one!
tknoll 10-22-2002, 10:34 AM Dustin:
Your the best. I hope the rig is in TOP shape for SEMA. Wish I could be there. Maybe next year.
About Jim from JR Reel, he is a very nice man indeed. Look for him at all of our events. He has already committed to sponsorship for the entire series.
Team Purple 10-22-2002, 10:54 AM Hey Dustin, We are looking forward to the next event. and if you think the the WINGs will help you lets get another side bet going, don't forget you are already 1 dinner down from Donner Ranch.
Bring it on...
Hey we missed you at the event, talk to you later..
Difficult Trail 10-22-2002, 03:43 PM Congrats again to Team Purple!

If anybody cares...
If it is water cooled, then it came from a Vanagon (T25). If it is air-cooled, the engine is a Type 1 based design, common to the VW beetle, early transporters, Ghia and Type 3s (the exhaust system tells all, the T1 2 or 3 aircooled and T25 watercooled were the only engines with that exhaust port orientation). It definitely is not the Type 4 engine found on the later busses and early air-cooled Vanagons, which is very popular for SCORE/SNORE racing.
BTW, if anybody wants, drop by http://www.cal-look.com/top20/top20main_2002.shtml
All cars N/A, street legal, etc. #20 on the list is a daily-driver in the summer time (whenever there isn't snow/salt on the roads). A good example of the capabilites of the air-cooled engine.
Jeff Knoll 10-22-2002, 04:14 PM sounds a heck of a lot better then sat. around dusk...
who wants another shot at CARNAGE CANYON?????:nuke:
Plenty more where that came from.
Team Purple 10-22-2002, 06:11 PM Congrats again to Team Purple!
You guys are on a roll now.

Thank you Difficult Trail
it takes time when you are trying new suspension setup to find a setup that is a little out side the box, but I thik it is working now, and we are starting to learn to drive it.
Talk to you later
once again thank you
