I thought that the D90 pictured was Greg Jevnes of Safarigard. I thought Carey Steiner had a white D90 not nearly as modified. Interesting that she was the only one to finish. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Greg let Carey use his rig for the Stock class competition. He spotted for her as she drove the course, setting a quick time. He ran the same Rover in the Modified class and got hung up on one of the first boulders that turned out to be a tough spot the whole time. Here is Cody Waggoner driving through the same spot.

There are made by some place called Moltan Image or something like that. There are 4 different covers they sell. I saw a small ad for them in one of the mags this month.

The event was about 30 minutes south of Riverside CA. The Pro class costs $150 + $100 for the three event series. Other classes are a little less. The next event is Jan 11th 2003.

Details here:
http://www.californiarockcrawlersassociation.com

Just to clarify, the fees. It is $30 for the stock class to compete. The modified class is $40. In order to make it more fair for the modified class, we created a pro class. This class has a $150 entry fee, and 100% of those fees go to cash prizes for this class.

In order to compete in any class, you must be a member of CRCA. It is $100 for one year membership. For that amout you get invitations to member only Play Days (two a year, we just had one in Sepember), tickets to the awards ceremony in April, quarterly newsletter, access to the memers only chat room(currently under construction), discount on all CRCA merchandise., and more. If you would like to check out our website it is www.californiarockcrawlersassociation.com.

We just gave Team Purple $1000 cash last night for winning the Pro Class, plus prizes, including an entire paint and body job from RVMD.

Hope this helps.

Chris you are a prince as always about posting great post event info & pix. :)

Wow! A CJ-5 WON modified? There is hope for the wheelbase challenged? Can anybody tell me the specs on this 5? Wheelbase still at 84"? Auto? Does this mean that CRCA courses are not just the province of the 104-108" wheelbase doing vertical obstacles?

What happened to Kathy in the Red Bull Jeep? Why was she running Pro instead of one of the lower classes?

Okay, I know who/what they were driving for Team Purple, Kathy, and figured out Cody Waggoner and Casey from previous posts. Can anybody put a vehicle with the other winners?

So how many total vehicles were enetered in each class at the event?

Anyone have mor pix?

About those diff. covers from Molten, I read that those things are made from cast aluminum. How is that gonna hold up angainst a rock or large tree?

This is from their price list. Hope this helps. I suggest you go to their site and and also download their list. They have a lot of cool covers and are made from stainless steel not aluminum.

Thanks for visiting Molten Image Design. We are a custom parts
design/manufacturer that designs and manufactures the most unique
parts for your automotive or motorcycle.
Our starting line is a series of differential cover designs that are cast
out of 303 stainless steel. They are machined to ensure a good seal and
include all the mounting hardware. Our up coming line of products
includes valve covers, air cleaners, exhaust tips, and other accessories.
They will be available sometime around Nov.

I owe the JP Team an apology. I didn't mention that Bart Dixon also made it through Carnage Canyon, and he did it in 3 wheel drive.

The Pros in the Main figured out the course and 4 of the 5 teams made it through Carnage Canyon. It was a very gratifying site.

It was simply the hardest trail I have ever seen. The first time through it was much harder. All of the spotters and a few of the drivers rearanged the rocks during the event and fixed some of the worst parts, but it's still really nasty.

During the first round none of the pro trucks completed the course, it was that hard. In the second run only team Purple was able to complete the course and with massive body/cage damage as it was necessary to drive sidways through that canyon at the start.

I think with a few added rocks it could be made easier. Personally I think an ideal trail would at least be passable by the majority of drivers. I would like to see the canyon included in future events but with the addition of a few rocks so that most of rigs can make it.

JR
10-21-2002, 11:30 PM
The pics make it look incredibly nasty, I don't see how a rig could get through the canyon without lots of damage. I'm not making light of the obstacle, but only have your pics to go on. Sense I wasn't there, thought I'd ask. :D
Thanks

Had a V8 auto spingover up front quarter eliptcal rear. He broke a front driveshaft just before getting to carnage canyon. So he was able to keep it clean and strait. I agree on the cage i was wonder what would hit first hear or cage. it was a ver nice rig though.

About CARNAGE CANYON:

It would not have been fair if I had told any of the drivers or spotters about the timbers buried in the rocks. I thought you guys would use them to build a bridge. Looks like you figured it out at the end.
I always like to add something in the course that makes you guys think. One time (at band camp) we had a gate you could make in reverse in about 2 seconds but it took 2 mins to drive thru forward. Just remember, this is not your father's rock crawling event.

"SPOTTER, USE THE WINCH!" Trail Hand Dan went hoarse trying to get that point across, and Tonya posted on the site at one point before the event, that there was an obstacle that required a winch to get through. We even put it in the rules that a winch was required in the pro class. We attempt to have our events capture all of the aspects of four-wheeling, not just driving ability. . .so USE YOUR TOOLS!

All in all, you guys flat got it awn. I have never seen anything like the crowd swarming Team Purple at the finish line, and another husband and wife team celebrating their anniversary by competing in an event. Happy Anniversary Ed and Cathy Crook.

To all the participants, vendors, media and spectators, you guys made my day Sunday when I went back to clean up (after wheelig the course till 2:00 am). There was not 1 piece of garbage in the parking lot, camping area , or pits. I truly appreciate that you all proved that it is not 4 wheelers that are trashing OUR public lands.

Please, please spend your money at the shops that support these events, weather its CRCA, CAL ROCS, UROC, RCAA, OR ANY OTHERS. Without the help of the sponsors, there won't be rock crawling events.

Hope to see you all back on January 11. You guys introduced a heck of a lot of lookieloos to the world of rock crawling. :D

I would love that because Angie and I are always to busy to get the shots we need for the site and I am always waiting on everyone else for the pics.

BUT

If your driving, which would probably be funner for you, you can't be media. Even Chris Geiger, was not allowed on the course during the Pro competition. He was dying too.

I like his All Pro reports and his write up is great. He had specifically asked me for a media pass again and I almost couldn't let him because he was spotting for Jon.

Your pics this time are great, I am in the process of switching our webserver and should be publishing over the changes today. I have put one of the pics you took of Jon as the main cover.

BY THE WAY COMPETITORS!!

We just had a meeting last night to recap and prepare for January. We are taking 20 Modified only! 10 stock! and 10 Pro! Get your stuff to me as soon as you know you are competing, because I know the MOD slots are going to fill fast.

We already have about 5 Mod slots already gone from Rocktoberfest competitors that have prepaid for all three events! Email me or call me with questions.:)

Eh, not quite. I don't see any discussion, or pictures for that matter, on the second place finisher in the Modified Class. Garry Hall and Blaine Johnson did a heck of a job on that course as indicated by their consistent times between both runs. There are all kinds of pics of the 3rd place finisher (not to take anything away from Julio and Laura who I think did a great job on building their rig and competing it) but there were 11 minutes separating them from 2nd place. While I think its great that Chris took the time to write things up, I also think its a shame he didn't recognize the outstanding job done by Garry and Blaine who put on a heck of a show for the spectators on the 2nd run.

You know I was just thinking to myself yesterday that I did not see as many pictures of Garry this time. I agree 100% with you. Garry and Blaine always do a check of job and put on a GREAT show for the spectators.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize that team. As you probably noticed from a lot of our pics and the website that Garry and Blaine do a wonderful job and we use a lot of their pics in our promtional material. I am sure that Tony Bothwell from Rockcrawler will have outstanding pics of them and of the all competitors again. As soon as I get his update I will post the link for all to see.

By the way, if you see Garry, let him know that I will send him the picture he has been wanting by the end of the week. I am going to use his poster again for our next Trade Show November 2 and 3, unless Tony has a better one of him that I can make into a poster in time.

Tony Bothwell took all of his shots in high quality digital format so that we could make posters if we need to. For those of you that are intersted, I will get you his information incase you want to get a great picture of yourself competing.

Let me know.

Thanx Tonya,
I'll pass your message onto Garry. BTW, we have met, I was the guy at the Off Road Expo (Saturday) who was talking to you about Garrys picture.

EDIT: Tonya, in re-reading your post, it also occured to me that another reason why there are not as many pictures of Garry and Blaine on the web is because Blaines wife was having a heck of a time getting clean sight lines due to the crowds. Guys don't want to give a female with a camera a break in the crowds it seems. Anyway you can get her a media pass or some access?
