Could some one give me a link to D300 info, specs, what years are best etc...

I am looking to purchase one soon and like to do some research. The down east offroad web page said the D300 is 4" shorter than a NP231 with a HD SYE. Is that the standard D300 or the really short one? What year are the really short ones, early 80's?

What do i look for when purchasing a used unit?

This will be going in a 91Yj with a 2.5L. There is a 98% chance a KluneV 4:1 will go in front of the D300. If its really 4" shorter all i need are 44044's in the rear and i wont have to move the motor forward.

oh yeah i did search & couldnt find any good links.

Thanks to TELLICO4x4.com also:

I won a D300 Flip kit at the Fall Crawl raffle this weekend and a set of TJ flares. :flipoff2:

I think '80 was the only year with the short output.

Here is a 80 next to a non 80 D300. About 1.5" difference

Thanks for the pic LAME, any red flags to look for when shopping for a used unit? I have a local jeep yard i can hit this weekend, i was just wondering what to check to see if its junk or rebuildable. thanks

Nice choice to use the Flipped Dana 300. Gears versus chains is always better. Call Novak adapters (877-602-1500). They have a new 4:1 kit for the 300 that is a hell of a lot better that Tera's and cheaper to boot. This I think is a better idea that the klune-V because of driveline lenghth and the cost of the Klune-V can stop the project.

YJ4RoX, I was the one that came up to you after the raffle and tried to buy that kit from you. I have found at least 3 or 4 D300 for under $100 so if it's more than that don't get it. The latest one I got was GIVEN to me for free! If you can't find one up in W. Va give me a shout and I'll find one for ya. I have 3 right now but two of them have been converted for use with my NV4500. Shipping from Ga should not be that expensive. Later

So the 80 D300 is the only varience? All the others are exactly the same when installed in a Jeep? I'm speaking strength wise, bolt pattern and ratio...

The scout 300 does not have the texas bolt pattern correct?

The Scout 300 does have the Texas bolt pattern, and a different input set up. I wouldn't bother with one unless you are dieing to use a T-18 (I think) which will give you a super short drive line.

Ratio same
Strength same
All jeep D300's are the same bolt pattern, from what I understand.

on the input part of the d300 some of them have a notch to get a pry bar in there, others dont. try to get one with the notch. I fawked one up pretty good that didnt have the notch trying to get it out of the case.

I have 3 dana 300's here and the only difference I've found besides the input housing is the short and long version. different output shaft, tail housing, and speedometer setup.

everything else looks exactly the same.

What about the electronic speedo crap. Arent all of the 300's set up for mechanical?

1980 is the same as a dana 20 speedo. its not adjustable as far as I know. the later ones use that removable dial a gear thing and you can put an electric one in there off a npxxx tcase instead.

You can get an adapter for the speedo to run electronic.
