I have recently done a top end rebuild on my 2F. New Cam, lifters, ceramic tuned headers, 38mm Weber, 2 1/2" exhaust. I got it to idle properly and tried to cut it off, but it just keeps doing the puttering/knocking thing. Anyone got any suggestion? I tried the idle jets on the carb, but no change.

Check your idle, timing & idle mixture. if these are set properly & you still have the dieseling problem then its running too hot or you have too low octane fuel. does it ping or knock under load?
does a webber have any kind of fuel cut device (like the stock aisin)?

This is a somewhat common occurring problem with the 38 Weber. When you adjust the idle mixture screws so the carb leans out, does the engine start to miss? If not then your idle jets are still too rich. I had to adjust down two jet sizes before I could get the proper mixture range for adjustment. If you do have this range the next logical step, I believe, would be to check your timing (though I run mine advanced with no problems).

I haven't got it on the road to do the load test yet, I need to register it again, I had it registered as a truck, but the lift is within the legal limits for PC. They charge a lot more for it as a truck out here...try $160.00 a year as apposed to $22.00 so now I have to drive it up to DMV to prove that it is not a truck and under 7,000 LBS.
I When I take it up there, I will see if it pings. I might have the vacume advance hooked up incorrectly. I will see tomorrow.
When you said that it might be running to hot, were you talking about the carb or the engine? The engine temp is normal.

engine temps, specifically head temps. it would have to be running pretty hot to cause it but steam pockets in the head *may* cause that as well as a malfuntioning temp gauge (actually pretty common but usually reads higher than actual temps)

I finally got back to the Cruiser today. I adjusted the idle mixture, and reset the timing. It runs perfectly now, thanks for all of the help Sixty and Rodeo
